Does normalized signal intensity of cervical discs on T2 weighted MRI images change in whiplash patients?

PURPOSE: We tested the hypothesis that whiplash trauma leads to changes of the signal intensity of cervical discs in T2-weighted images. METHODS AND MATERIALS: 50 whiplash patients (18-65 years) were examined within 48h after motor vehicle accident, and again after 3 and 6 months and compared to 50 age- and sex-matched controls. Signal intensity in ROI's of the discs at the levels C2/3 to C7/T1 and the adjacent vertebral bodies were measured on sagittal T2 weighted MR images and normalized using the average of ROI's in fat tissue. The contrast between discs and both adjacent vertebrae was cal

Effects of vitamin A deficiency on the function of pituitary-gonadal system in male rats.

The effects of vitamin A deficiency on the pituitary-gonadal function were examined by measurements of serum and pituitary level of pituitary hormones and serum testosterone concentration, and by investigations of histological changes in the testis and the pituitary gland in vitamin A-deficient (VAD) and supplemented (VAS) rats. The growth of VAD rats was retarded and their body weights were decreased after 9 weeks of experiments and attained about one half of the weight of control animals at 12 weeks. In the VAD rats, serum testosterone concentrations were decreased significantly compared wit

Food for thought: re-emergence of tardive dyskinesia amid nutritional rehabilitation of atypical anorexia nervosa; a case report.

BACKGROUND: Atypical anorexia nervosa is an eating disorder that involves significant restriction of food intake leading to clinically significant weight loss despite remaining at a normal or above normal weight for age or height. Part of rehabilitation involves increasing calorie intake for nutritional rehabilitation and weight gain to an appropriate percentage of ideal body weight, determined based on patient weight history. This report highlights the importance of considering how increased food intake in a previously malnourished patient can affect the metabolism of medications they are tak

Extended-release naltrexone/bupropion and liver health: Pooled, post hoc analysis from four randomized controlled trials.

Sustained weight loss improves liver histology in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. This post hoc analysis of four phase III, 56-week, randomized controlled trials investigated if extended-release naltrexone and bupropion (NB) affects alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and Fibrosis-4 (FIB-4) index in adults with overweight or obesity. Two thousand and seventy-three subjects (NB = 1310; placebo = 763; 79.0% female; 81.6% Caucasian) had baseline mean weight 101 kg, body mass index 36.2 kg/m2 , ALT 26.9 IU/L and FIB-4 0.79. At 56 weeks, NB-treated subjects experienced more weight loss than placebo (

Early onset intrauterine growth restriction in a mouse model of gestational hypercholesterolemia and atherosclerosis.

The susceptibility to develop atherosclerosis is increased by intrauterine growth restriction and prenatal exposure to maternal hypercholesterolemia. Here, we studied whether mouse gestational hypercholesterolemia and atherosclerosis affected fetal development and growth at different stages of gestation. Female LDLR KO mice fed a proatherogenic, high cholesterol (HC) diet for 3 weeks before conception and during pregnancy exhibited a significant increase in non-HDL cholesterol and developed atherosclerosis. At embryonic days 12.5 (E12.5), E15.5, and E18.5, maternal gestational hypercholesterol

Drug treatment of obesity.

At present only two drugs are approved for long-term treatment of obesity. Sibutramine inhibits the reuptake of serotonin and norepinephrine. In clinical trials it produces a dose-dependent 5-10% decrease in body weight. Its side effects include dry mouth, insomnia, asthenia, and constipation. In addition, sibutramine produces a small increase in blood pressure and pulse that is a contraindication to the use of this drug in some individuals with heart disease. Xenical is the other drug approved for long-term use in the treatment of obesity. It works by blocking lipase and thus increasing the f

Nutritional and behavioral factors associated with the occurrence and duration of winter weight gain.

BackgroundObesity is rising worldwide, including Japan. Seasonal "holiday weight gain," well documented in Western settings, may similarly contribute to long-term body mass index increases in Japan.AimTo estimate the prevalence and magnitude of winter weight gain in Japanese university students and identify lifestyle factors associated with prolonged weight retention.MethodsA cross-sectional survey was conducted among 339 students (141 men, 198 women; mean age 19.4 years). Participants self-reported winter weight change, time needed to return to their usual pre-winter weight, diet, physical ac

Impact of postoperative weight loss on anticoagulant dosing after major lower limb amputation.

OBJECTIVE: Major lower limb amputation is often the final treatment for patients with chronic limb-threatening ischaemia. Postoperative weight loss is a common but under-recognised issue that may affect dosing accuracy for weight-dependent anticoagulants such as low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) and direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs). This study assessed the extent of postoperative weight change and the frequency of anticoagulant dose adjustment in routine practice. METHODS: A single-centre retrospective cohort study included patients who underwent above- or below-knee amputation between Ju

The effect of sports training on the age-related changes of body composition and isokinetic peak torque in knee extensors of junior speed skaters.

To elucidate the effect of sports training on age-related changes of body composition and isokinetic peak torque (IPT) in knee extensors, junior speed skaters were tested in comparison with relatively sedentary age-matched controls. Subjects consisted of 132 male and 71 female junior speed skaters (SSs; aged 10-18 years). Two-hundred and thirty-six males and 265 females between the ages of 10 to 18 in the same geographic area were also tested as controls (Cs). Lean Body Mass (LBM) and relative body fat (%) were estimated from skinfolds, using the equations for preadolescent boys and girls. An

Transient patterns of advanced brain ageing in female adolescents with anorexia nervosa.

BACKGROUND: Anorexia nervosa is a psychiatric disorder characterised by undernutrition, significantly low body weight and large, although possibly transient, reductions in brain structure. Advanced brain ageing tracks accelerated age-related changes in brain morphology that have been linked to psychopathology and adverse clinical outcomes. AIM: The aim of the current case-control study was to characterise cross-sectional and longitudinal patterns of advanced brain age in acute anorexia nervosa and during the recovery process. METHOD: Measures of grey- and white-matter-based brain age were ob

Sweet taste preference is associated with greater hypothalamic response to glucose and longitudinal weight gain.

The hypothalamus has an abundant expression of sweet taste receptors that play a role in glucose sensing and energy homeostasis. Evidence suggests that liking "sweets" can be associated with weight gain, but the relationship between sweet taste preference and hypothalamic regulation of appetite is unknown. This study tested the hypothesis that sweet taste preference is associated with increased hypothalamic activation in response to glucose (a purported neural marker for weight gain risk) and greater longitudinal increases in body mass index (BMI). Fifty-four adults aged 18-35 years with a mea
