We describe a case of fatal asthmatic attack in 27-year-old woman with type II brittle asthma and pollinosis. Despite recurrent episodes of severe asthmatic attacks she refused prolonged therapy with the exception of beta 2-agonists used when needed. The day prior to the fatal attack she was intensively exposed to pollens. She ineffectively tried to manage the attack with high doses of beta 2-agonists administered by MDI and jet nebulizer. We report herein the rare case of an 8-year-old boy in whom an inflammatory pseudotumor of the upper lobe bronchus of the right lung was successfully treated by bronchoplasty. A 75-year-old woman followed for Wegener's disease was hospitalized for pleural effusion. The clinical presentation and cytology of the pleural fluid suggested the diagnosis of purulent pleurisy in this immunodepressed patient. The final diagnosis was a pleural involvement of Wegener's disease, a rarely described localization, as proven by the typical pathology findings.

We report a case of a persistent middle-lobar pneumonia, which did not respond to antibiotics. Only a second bronchial endoscopy, with a third thoracic densitometry and histopathological results give the final diagnostic of tracheobronchial foreign body. We studied 43 tissue samples taken from patients (16 male and 27 women) with clinical diagnosis of Kartagener's syndrome. The specimens were fixed and prepared for transmission electron microscopy. The paper describes 239 children with bronchopulmonary disease due to foreign body (f.b.) aspiration treated in our center during between 1980-1992. Twenty-eight percent of the cases had been referred to hospital without any suspicion of f.b. aspiration. Almost half of the children (49.7%) were below the age of 2 years. We describe the clinical and radiographic features of four premature infants with acute iatrogenic tracheobronchial perforation by endotracheal tube (ETT) placement. We report a case of an 85-year-old woman who presented with acute respiratory failure, caused by aspirating a sucralfate tablet that totally occluded her left main-stem bronchus. Acute respiratory failure resolved after bronchoscopic removal of the markedly expanded tablet. To our knowledge, the acute obstruction of a main-stem bronchus by an aspirated foreign body has not been previously described in adults. We believe that the unusual properties of sucralfate tablets (rapid expansion and mucosal binding) were contributing factors in this patient.
