Causes of death in children with congenital Zika syndrome in Brazil, 2015 to 2018: A nationwide record linkage study.

BACKGROUND: Children with congenital Zika syndrome (CZS) have severe damage to the peripheral and central nervous system (CNS), greatly increasing the risk of death. However, there is no information on the sequence of the underlying, intermediate, immediate, and contributing causes of deaths among these children. The aims of this study are describe the sequence of events leading to death of children with CZS up to 36 months of age and their probability of dying from a given cause, 2015 to 2018. METHODS AND FINDINGS: In a population-based study, we linked administrative data on live births, de

Artificial intelligence framework to predict wall stress in abdominal aortic aneurysm.

OBJECTIVES: Despite persistent racial disparities in preterm birth (PTB) in the US among non-Hispanic (NH) black women compared to NH white women, it remains controversial whether sociodemographic factors can explain these differences. We sought to evaluate whether disparities in PTB persist among NH black women with high socioeconomic status (SES). STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a population-based cohort study of all live births in the US from 2015-2017 using birth certificate data from the National Vital Statistics System. We included singleton, non-anomalous live births among women who were of

[Evaluation of the use of care programs provided for under the law of 5 July 2011].

OBJECTIVES: The law of 5 July 2011 introduced the possibility of outpatient care without consent in the context of care programs (CP). Despite major ethical and legal issues and frequent recourse in France, few studies are available on the use of this mechanism. An in-depth review of practices involving a large sample of CP was essential. The main objective of this study was to look at their content, the clinical profile of the patients involved, and the progress of these CP. METHODS: We carried out a retrospective, observational study, including all the CP set up between January 1st, 2016 an

Preterm Birth and Receipt of Postpartum Contraception Among Women with Medicaid in North Carolina.

OBJECTIVES: To compare receipt of contraception and method effectiveness in the early postpartum period among women with and without a recent preterm birth (PTB). METHODS: We used data from North Carolina birth certificates linked to Medicaid claims. We assessed contraceptive claims with dates of service within 90 days of delivery among a retrospective cohort of women who had a live birth covered by Medicaid between September 2011 and 2012 (n = 58,201). To estimate the odds of receipt of contraception by PTB status (24-36 weeks compared to 37-42 weeks [referent]), we used logistic regression

Innovative telementoring for addiction management for remote primary care physicians: A feasibility study.

OBJECTIVE: Addiction is a growing public health problem which affects the person, the whole family, and society. The primary care physician (PCP) is often the first point of contact in the health care and can play a significant role in the early detection and intervention. It is well established that early intervention is associated with better outcomes. In the formal medical training, PCPs receive no formal training on drug addiction management. In this pilot study, we developed an innovative telementoring model and looked at feasibility as well as acceptability among remote PCPs on drug addi

The Second World Cholera Pandemic (1826-1849) in the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies with Special Reference to the Towns of San Prisco and Forio d'Ischia.

The second world cholera pandemic in Europe (1829-1849) was significant because of its geographic extent and the enormous numbers of people who fell ill or died. It was also singularly important because it demonstrated the profound levels of ignorance in both Europe and North America concerning the cause, modes of transmission, and treatment of cholera. This paper discusses the pandemic in the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies in great detail. Even though medical and public health authorities in this kingdom had several years to prepare for cholera's eventual arrival in 1836-1837, their elaborate pr

Trends in aortic aneurysm- and dissection-related mortality in the state of São Paulo, Brazil, 1985-2009: multiple-cause-of-death analysis.

BACKGROUND: Aortic aneurysm and dissection are important causes of death in older people. Ruptured aneurysms show catastrophic fatality rates reaching near 80%. Few population-based mortality studies have been published in the world and none in Brazil. The objective of the present study was to use multiple-cause-of-death methodology in the analysis of mortality trends related to aortic aneurysm and dissection in the state of Sao Paulo, between 1985 and 2009. METHODS: We analyzed mortality data from the Sao Paulo State Data Analysis System, selecting all death certificates on which aortic aneu

Medical records and issues in negligence.

It is very important for the treating doctor to properly document the management of a patient under his care. Medical record keeping has evolved into a science of itself. This will be the only way for the doctor to prove that the treatment was carried out properly. Moreover, it will also be of immense help in the scientific evaluation and review of patient management issues. Medical records form an important part of the management of a patient. It is important for the doctors and medical establishments to properly maintain the records of patients for two important reasons. The first one is tha

Predictors of survival after severe dysphagic stroke.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Dysphagia is estimated to occur in up to 50% of the stroke neurorehabilitation population. Those patients with severe neurogenic oropharyngeal dysphagia (NOD) may receive feeding gastrostomy tubes (FGT) if noninvasive therapies prove ineffective in eliminating aspiration or sustaining adequate nutritional intake. Our aim was to quantify the recovery of swallowing function, and to identify variables predictive of survival after dysphagic stroke requiring FGT placement. METHODS: We identified consecutive stroke patients with severe dysphagic stroke requiring FGT placemen
