Perceptions of school climate and depression among Black youth: Do sex and income matter?

Schools play a crucial role in shaping adolescents' development as they navigate the social world beyond their families, with school climate-students' perceptions of the social environment-emerging as a key influence on their mental health outcomes. Previous studies with Black adolescent samples from lower socioeconomic backgrounds have found a link between school climate perceptions and psychological functioning. Black adolescents have been found to perceive a less positive school climate than their peers from other racial backgrounds, leading to increased vulnerability to adverse psychologic

Pathway linking unwanted pregnancy to low birth weight in Indonesia: A conditional mediation analysis.

Unwanted pregnancies resulting in detrimental consequences for both the mother and the child, including low birth weight, pose a remarkable challenge in developing countries. Although the association between low birth weight (LBW) and unwanted pregnancy is widely demonstrated, the results have been inconsistent, and the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. We examined maternal antenatal care (ANC) completeness as a potential mediating factor of the association between unwanted pregnancy and LBW among women in Indonesia, as well as the moderating effect of family support during pregnancy. We u

A review of health-related quality of life issues in children suffering from certain key otolaryngological illnesses.

BACKGROUND: The health-related quality of life (HRQoL) concept is nowadays increasingly and more broadly used for helping evaluate the effectiveness of medical treatment, superseding the earlier "quality of life" approach. The HRQoL concept likewise applies to otolaryngology and this narrative review study is focused on HRQoL outcomes in four key childhood otolaryngological diseases as reported in the literature. STUDY AIM: To retrospectively evaluate the literature on measuring HRQoL in children suffering from selected otolaryngological illnesses, during treatment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Pu

How social support and parent-child relationship quality relate to LGBTQ+ college students' well-being during COVID-19.

The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has negatively impacted the well-being of many college students, particularly lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning (LGBTQ +) students who are already at a disproportionate risk for negative mental health and well-being outcomes. To identify potential risk and protective factors we examined LGBTQ + college students' disclosure of sexual orientation, gender identity, or both (SOGI) to mothers and fathers, living arrangements (whether or not students lived with mothers and fathers), social support from family and friends, and pare

Influenza virus prevalence in asymptomatic and symptomatic subjects during pandemic and postpandemic periods.

BACKGROUND: In 2009, Influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 had a major effect on global health, causing thousands of deaths. However, the results of asymptomatic infection in transmission has not been well studied. We analyzed asymptomatic influenza infection in individuals with different risk factors for acquiring influenza in a university hospital. METHODS: Respiratory samples from 100 children with respiratory symptoms, their asymptomatic caregivers, 100 asymptomatic HIV-infected patients, and 100 health care workers collected during 2009-2011 were tested for influenza by real time real-time polymerase c

Longevity factor klotho and chronic psychological stress.

Chronic psychological stress is associated with accelerated aging and premature morbidity and mortality; however, the biology linking chronic psychological stress and its maladaptive effects remains largely unknown. Klotho is a pleiotropic hormone that regulates the aging process and promotes better brain and body health. Whether klotho is linked to psychosocial stress or its negative impact in humans has not been investigated. To address this gap, we recruited 178 healthy women who were either chronically high-stress maternal caregivers for a child with autism spectrum disorder (n = 90) or lo

Differential item functioning related to ethnicity in an oral health-related quality of life measure.

OBJECTIVE: To assess whether an oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL)measure showed differential item functioning (DIF) by ethnicity. METHODS: A simple random sample of 12- and 13-year-old schoolchildren enrolled in the Taranaki District Health Board's school dental service, New Zealand. Each child (n = 430) completed the Child Perception Questionnaire (CPQ(11-14)) in the dental clinic waiting room, prior to a dental examination. The dataset included age, gender, ethnicity, and deprivation status. The general principle of the analytic plan was that equal scores from each CPQ(11-14) ite

Mental Health of LGBT+ Young People and Their Parents: A Dyadic Approach.

LGBT+ young people often have poor mental health, and the parent-child relationship seems to play a crucial role in this. The aim of this study was to investigate the psychological factors that may be involved in the mental health of LGBT+ youth and their parents, taking a dyadic approach (i.e. taking into account the interdependence between the young people's characteristics and those of their parents). To di this, 154 dyads including a parent and their LGBT youth aged between 16 and 25, were recruited. They completed an online questionnaire measuring the following variables: two personality

Purpose: To assess the oral health status of children with Down syndrome (DS) in the United States and evaluate the oral health needs of families with DS. Methods: Among 320 parents who consented to participate, 260 (81.2 percent) surveys were completed. A survey was distributed through the National Down Syndrome Society to parents of children with DS up to age 21 years, which asked questions about children's general and oral health. Results: Parents who reported that their children had difficulty rinsing and spitting were more likely to report their child's overall general health as poor (P<0

Development of a screening tool enabling identification of infants and toddlers at risk of family abuse and neglect: a feasibility study from three South European countries.

BACKGROUND: Child abuse is a health and social problem, and few screening instruments are available for the detection of risk in primary health care. The aim was to develop a screening instrument to be used by professionals in the public health care sector, thus enabling the detection of infants and toddlers at risk of emotional and physical abuse and neglect, and to provide evidence for the feasibility of the instrument in Cyprus, Greece and Spain. METHOD: A total of 50 health professionals from paediatric public health-care centres in the three countries were involved in a three-step proces

The Weather-Child Morbidity Link and the Modifying Effect of Maternal Education and Sanitation: Evidence from Sub-Saharan Africa.

A database of historic rainfall and temperature standardized anomalies was constructed for sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) over the period 2000 to 2020 and merged with the harmonized versions of 51 rounds of Demographic and Health Surveys for 19 countries in SSA. Multivariable logit models of the determinants of the probability of reported incidence of fever, diarrhea, and coughing among children under 5 years of age were estimated with explanatory variables, including the quintiles of rainfall and temperature anomalies experienced locally, and a variety of observable child, maternal, household, and

When Language Access Is at Risk: Children of Parents With Deafblindness and the Role of Societal Support.

PURPOSE: This commentary emphasizes the child's position and the right to develop language that enables communication with a parent who has deafblindness. We argue that societal services have a responsibility to ensure that this right is fulfilled. Deafblindness affects access to information and communication and has implications for family life when a parent has deafblindness. In such families, shared communication is essential for emotional bonds, parenting, and children's development, yet it often requires adaptations beyond spoken or visual sign language, including tactile and social hapti

Understanding Stunting: Impact, Causes, and Strategy to Accelerate Stunting Reduction-A Narrative Review.

Stunting is a major global health concern, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, due to its persistently high prevalence. It often originates from chronic malnutrition during the critical first 1000 days of life. Maternal and child nutrition are critical determinants of a child's growth and development. This article aimed to explore the impact, causes, and evidence-based strategies to accelerate the reduction of stunting incidence worldwide. This review was undertaken with sources from PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar, Science Direct, and MEDLINE from October 2024 to January 2025. Th
