IMPORTANCE: Depression is a frequently occurring mental disorder and may be common in adults with autism spectrum disorders (ASD), but there is a lack of longitudinal population-based studies examining this association. Whether any increased risk of depression in ASD has a shared familial basis and whether it differs by co-occurring intellectual disability is not well known.
OBJECTIVES: To examine whether individuals with ASD are more likely to be diagnosed as having depression in adulthood than the general population and their nonautistic siblings and to investigate whether these risks diffe

PURPOSE: Eye gaze interfaces have been used by people with severe physical impairment to interact with various assistive technologies. If us … eing able to select target objects in the physical environment by eye gaze could make it easier for children with disabilities to control assistive robots, because in this way they do not have to change their focus between a computer screen with commands and the robot.Providing auditory or vibrotactile feedback when using an eye gaze system made it faster and easier to know …

BACKGROUND: One million children develop tuberculosis (TB) each year and a quarter of these die. TB meningitis (TBM) is the most severe form of TB disease and even if diagnosed and treated, 20% die and over 50% of survivors are left with permanent neurological disability. Much of the morbidity and mortality associated with TBM is due to infarction yet, despite this, our understanding of the pathogenesis of infarction in TBM remains limited, especially in children. METHODS: The iThemba study (Understanding ischemia in children with tuberculous meningitis), aims to recruit 100 children with prob

PURPOSE: Individuals with proximal 16p11.2 copy number variants (CNVs), either deletions (16p11.2DS) or duplications (16p11.2Dup), are predisposed to neurodevelopmental difficulties and disorders, such as language disorders, intellectual disability, and autism spectrum disorder. The purpose of the current study was to characterize language profiles of school-age children with proximal 16p11.2 CNVs, in relation to the normative sample and unaffected siblings of children with 16p11.2DS.
METHOD: Standardized language tests were conducted in 33 school-age children with BP4-BP5 16p11.2 CNVs and ei

Background and Objective: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) refers to a heterogeneous set of neurodevelopmental disorders with diverse symptom severity and comorbidities. Although alterations in gut microbiota have been reported in individuals with ASD, it remains unclear whether certain microbial pattern is linked to specific symptom or comorbidity in ASD. We aimed to investigate the associations between gut microbiota and the severity of social impairment and cognitive functioning in children with ASD. Methods: A total of 261 age-matched children, including 138 children diagnosed with ASD, 63 w

BACKGROUND: Children who are deaf or hard of hearing (D/HH) have improved language outcomes when enrolled in early intervention (EI) before the age of 6 months. Little is understood about the long-term impact of EI on outcomes of kindergarten readiness (K-readiness). The study objective was to evaluate the impact of EI before the age of 6 months (early) versus after 6 months (later) on K-readiness in children who are D/HH.
METHODS: In this study, we leveraged data from the Ohio Early Hearing Detection and Intervention Data Linkage Project, which linked records of 1746 infants identified with

CONTEXT: Major depression and dysthymia in adolescence are associated with substantial disability, need for mental health services, and risk for recurrence. Concrete suicidal ideation and attempts during adolescence are particularly associated with significant distress, morbidity, and risk for completed suicide.
OBJECTIVES: To test the hypothesis that young children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are at increased risk for depression and suicidal ideation and attempts during adolescence and to identify early predictors of which young children with ADHD are at greatest ris

Acute compartment syndrome (ACS) is a rare but limb-threatening emergency in children, usually associated with displaced fractures, crush injuries, or high-energy trauma. Prompt recognition and fasciotomy are essential to prevent permanent disability. An unusual case of ACS after non-displaced fractures is presented, challenging traditional risk factors. A healthy 4-year-old girl presented 12 h after a 2-m fall with severe forearm pain, swelling, an absent radial pulse, delayed capillary refill (3 - 4 s), and cold digits. Radiographs showed non-displaced proximal ulna and distal radius fractur

Hemiplegic Cerebral Palsy (CP) is the most common pediatric motor disability, characterized by unilateral motor weakness. Pediatric Constraint-Induced Movement Therapy (pCIMT) improves affected extremity function but faces variable clinical integration. This study assessed U.S. providers' awareness and use of pCIMT, educational practices, and barriers to broader implementation for more eligible children. Overall, 148 providers specializing in pediatric stroke or hemiplegic CP completed surveys on pCIMT familiarity, implementation challenges, and support for evidence-based practices (EBP). Part

The primary aim was to describe speech and language abilities in a clinical group of verbal 5-year-old children diagnosed with neurological disability (ND) in infancy, and the secondary aim was to trace precursors to consonant production at age 5 years (T2) in data from 12 to 22 months (T1). The participants (n = 11, with Down syndrome (DS), cerebral palsy, and chromosomal deletion syndromes) were tested with a battery of speech and language tests. Consonant production at T2 was compared to data on consonant use at T1. At T2, two participants had age appropriate speech and language and another

BACKGROUND: For young children experiencing phonological awareness (PA) difficulties, the need for early and targeted intervention to prevent reading disability is unequivocal. There are very few studies, however, on the efficacy of PA interventions delivered at school.
AIMS: This study examined the impact of an early PA intervention embedded within an oral language program designed for at-risk kindergartners.
METHODS: Using a quasi-experimental pretest/posttest design, at-risk readers from four schools received either the 10-week intervention in small groups, three times a week for 30 min a

Femoral fractures in childhood are rare and are usually the result of severe trauma. Conservative treatment (overhead extension, hip spica cast) can be used in children up to 3 years of age and beyond that elastic stable intramedullary nailing (ESIN) is the method of choice. The prognosis is very good if the surgical technique is adequate. In adolescents > 50 kg in body weight solid nails implanted via the greater trochanter are an alternative (adolescent lateral femoral nail, ALFN). External fixators and plate osteosynthesis are indicated in special situations. Femoral neck fractures are very

This commentary is intended to supplement the accompanying review of sleep problems in childhood psychiatric disorders by Gregory and Sadeh. A number of considerations are outlined because of their relevance to both clinical practice and research concerning assessment and treatment of sleep disturbance in children in general and especially those with psychiatric and/or neurological conditions. These considerations (which illustrate the importance of combined medical and psychological involvement) are as follows: the importance of screening for sleep disturbance which otherwise may well be over

Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIAs) is the most common chronic rheumatic disease of childhood and is an important cause of disability. The folic acid analog methotrexate is the first choice disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drug in this disease, however, 35-45% of patients fail to respond. Molecular elements, such as variants in genes of pharmacological relevance, influencing response to methotrexate in JIA, would be important to individualize treatment strategies. Several studies have evaluated the effects of candidate genetic variants in the complex pathway of genes involved in methotrexate

BACKGROUND: Dyslexia is a learning disability that is characterized by difficulties in the acquisition of reading and spelling skills independent of intelligence, motivation or schooling. Studies of western populations have suggested that DYX1C1 is a candidate gene for dyslexia. In view of the different languages used in Caucasian and Chinese populations, it is therefore worthwhile to investigate whether there is an association of DYX1C1 in Chinese children with dyslexia.
METHOD AND RESULTS: Eight single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were genotyped from three hundred and ninety three indivi

We developed an Internet survey to identify treatments used by parents of children with autism. The survey listed 111 treatments and was distributed via colleagues and through chapters of the Autism Society of America and Autism Organizations Worldwide. A total of 552 parents submitted usable returns during the 3-month survey period. On average the parents reported using seven different treatments. The number of treatments used varied as a function of the child's age and type/severity of disability within the autism spectrum. Speech therapy was the most commonly reported intervention, followed
