The impact of prior head injury on outcomes following group and individual cognitive processing therapy among military personnel.

This study examined the impact of a history of head injury (HHI) on posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression symptoms in active duty military personnel following group and individual cognitive processing therapy (CPT). Data for these secondary analyses were drawn from a clinical trial comparing group and individual CPT. Service members (N = 268, 91.0% male) were randomized to 12 sessions of group (n = 133) or individual (n = 135) CPT. Most participants (57.1%) endorsed a deployment-related HHI, 92.8% of whom reported currently experiencing symptoms (CES) related to the head injury (

Mindfulness-based and acceptance-based programmes in the treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder: a study protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) with exposure and response prevention is the recommended standard for the treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). However, a high proportion of patients refuse this treatment, do not respond or relapse shortly after treatment. Growing evidence suggests that mindfulness-based and acceptance-based programmes (MABPs) are an effective option for the treatment of OCD. This systematic review and meta-analysis will examine the effectiveness of MABPs in treating OCD. We also aimed to explore potential moderators of the programmes' effectivene

Multimodal therapy for rigid, persistent avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) since infancy: A case report.

Avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) is a feeding and eating disorder that results in nutritional inadequacies, weight loss, and/or dependence on enteral feeds, and for which three clinical subtypes have been described. We present a unique case of an 11-year-old boy with rigid ARFID since infancy and features of all three ARFID subtypes. The patient presented with a life-long history of sensory aversion, limited intake and phobia of vomiting resulting in restriction to a single food item (yogurt) for more than 5 years. He presented with severe iron-deficiency anaemia, and deficien

Integrated weight loss and cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) for the treatment of recurrent binge eating and high body mass index: a randomized controlled trial.

PURPOSE: The association between binge eating and obesity is increasing. Treatments for disorders of recurrent binge eating comorbid with obesity reduce eating disorder (ED) symptoms, but not weight. This study investigated the efficacy and safety of introducing a weight loss intervention to the treatment of people with disorders of recurrent binge eating and a high body mass index (BMI). METHODS: A single-blind randomized controlled trial selected adults with binge eating disorder or bulimia nervosa and BMI ≥ 27 to < 40 kg/m2. The primary outcome was sustained weight loss at 12-month follow-

Interpersonal violence and head injury: The effects on treatment for PTSD.

Objective: This study sought to understand the extent and influence of head injuries (HIs) on recovery from posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in a sample of treatment-seeking survivors of interpersonal violence, including intimate partner violence (IPV). Method: Three randomized controlled clinical trials (RCTs) investigating the efficacy of cognitive processing therapy were combined to form a repository resulting in 306 participants (92% women) diagnosed with PTSD. Participants were an average age of 36.83 years old (SD = 12.15), and 56% were White and 40% were Black. RCTs were conducted a

Sleep Issues in Parkinson's Disease and Their Management.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is an alpha-synucleinopathy that leads to prominent motor symptoms including tremor, bradykinesia, and postural instability. Nonmotor symptoms including autonomic, neurocognitive, psychiatric symptoms, and sleep disturbances are also seen frequently in PD. The impact of PD on sleep is related to motor and nonmotor symptoms, in addition to the disruption of the pathways regulating sleep by central nervous system pathology. Rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder is a parasomnia that can lead to self-injury and/or injury to partners at night. Restless legs syndrome is

Effect of psychiatric symptoms and male sexual function of couples on the success of treatment for vaginismus.

UNLABELLED: Background This study evaluated psychiatric factors and sexual functions of women with vaginismus and their partners during the treatment process. METHODS: The study was performed on 110 women diagnosed with vaginismus and their partners. The women underwent cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), and couples were divided into two groups: successful and unsuccessful therapy. Sexual function in couples was evaluated using the Golombok Rust Index of Sexual Satisfaction (GRISS) in men and the Female Sexual Function Index in women. The psychopathological symptoms of participants were eva

Investigating coregulation of emotional arousal during exposure-based CBT using vocal encoding and actor-partner interdependence models.

High patient emotional arousal during rationale development for in vivo exposure in CBT for panic disorder with agoraphobia might endanger comprehension of the exposure rationale. Since therapists are supposed to coregulate patients' emotions, this study investigated whether there was evidence of coregulation of vocally encoded emotional arousal, assessed by fundamental frequency (f0), during rationale development. Furthermore, the association of patient f0 stability and therapist coregulation with patients' perceived rationale plausibility was analyzed. N = 197 therapy videos-used to deduct f

Unguided Chatbot-Delivered Cognitive Behavioural Intervention for Problem Gamblers Through Messaging App: A Randomised Controlled Trial.

Internet-delivered intervention may be an acceptable alternative for the more than 90% of problem gamblers who are reluctant to seek face-to-face support. Thus, we aimed to (1) develop a low-dropout unguided intervention named GAMBOT integrated with a messaging app; and (2) investigate its effect. The present study was a randomised, quadruple-blind, controlled trial. We set pre-to-post change in the Problem Gambling Severity Index (PGSI) as the primary outcome and pre-to-post change in the Gambling Symptom Assessment Scale (G-SAS) as a secondary outcome. Daily monitoring, personalised feedback

Using Latent Variable Mixture Modeling to Understand Trauma-Related Outcomes in Undergraduate Women.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and sexual functioning problems often co-occur after trauma. Researchers have linked certain factors (e.g., depression, relationship satisfaction) to PTSD and sexual functioning, but it is unclear how these variables interact. Adult undergraduate female trauma survivors (N = 280) completed self-report measures via an online survey. Latent variable mixture modeling generated four groups that differed in terms of their PTSD symptom severity, sexual functioning, sexual pain, relationship status, and relationship functioning. ANOVAs explored group differences.

Evaluation of Teen BodyWise: A pilot study of a body image group adapted for adolescent inpatients with anorexia nervosa.

PURPOSE: Body image disturbance is a key characteristic of anorexia nervosa (AN); however, research into these difficulties among adolescents with AN is limited and is yet to assess the best treatments for this population. METHODS: Fifty-two adolescents receiving inpatient treatment for AN attended Teen BodyWise, an eight-session body image group adapted for adolescents. Measures assessing shape and weight concerns, ability to discuss body image, sociocultural attitudes, body avoidance, body checking, and motivation were given before and after the group, and participant feedback was elicited.

Effect of CBT on Biased Semantic Network in Panic Disorder: A Multicenter fMRI Study Using Semantic Priming.

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) has been hypothesized to act by reducing the pathologically enhanced semantic, anxiety-related associations of patients with panic disorder. This study investigated the effects of CBT on the behavioral and neural correlates of the panic-related semantic network in patients with panic disorder. METHODS: An automatic semantic priming paradigm specifically tailored for panic disorder, in which panic symptoms (e.g., "dizziness") were primed by panic triggers (e.g., "elevator") compared with neutral words (e.g., "bottle"), was performed during function

Symptom trajectories in patients with panic disorder in a primary care intervention: Results from a randomized controlled trial (PARADISE).

This analysis aims to identify and characterize symptom trajectories in primary care patients with panic disorder with/without agoraphobia (PD/AG) who participated in a primary care team based training involving elements of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). Growth Mixture Modeling was used to identify different latent classes of change in patients with PD/AG (N = 176) who underwent treatment including CBT elements. We identified three patient classes with distinct similar trajectories. Class 1 (n = 58, mean age: 46.2 years ± 13.4 years, 81% women) consisted of patients with an initially hig

Psychological interventions for co-occurring depression and substance use disorders.

BACKGROUND: Comorbid depression and substance use disorders are common and have poorer outcomes than either disorder alone. While effective psychological treatments for depression or substance use disorders are available, relatively few randomised controlled trials (RCTs) have examined the efficacy of these treatments in people with these comorbid disorders. OBJECTIVES: To assess the efficacy of psychological interventions delivered alone or in combination with pharmacotherapy for people diagnosed with comorbid depression and substance use disorders. SEARCH METHODS: We searched the following

Economic evaluation in implementation science: Making the business case for implementation strategies.

Implementation researchers have made notable progress in developing and testing implementation strategies (i.e., highly-specified methods used to help providers improve uptake of mental health evidence-based practices: EBPs). Yet, implementation strategies are not widely applied in healthcare organizations to improve delivery of EBPs. Economic considerations are a key factor influencing the use of implementation strategies to deliver and sustain mental health evidence-based practices, in part because many health care leaders are reluctant to invest in ongoing implementation strategy support wi

The etiology, diagnosis, and management of hyperhidrosis: A comprehensive review: Etiology and clinical work-up.

Hyperhidrosis (HH) is a dermatologic disorder defined by sweat production exceeding thermoregulatory needs. Clinically, HH is diagnosed when excess sweating creates significant emotional, physical, or social discomfort, causing a negative impact on the patient's quality of life. Existing data imply that this condition may affect at least 4.8% of the US population. The etiology of HH may stem from a complex autonomic nervous system dysfunction, resulting in neurogenic overactivity of otherwise normal eccrine sweat glands. Alternatively, HH may be a result of aberrant central control of emotions

Can Between-Session Homework Be Delivered Digitally? A Pilot Randomized Clinical Trial of CBT for Adjustment Disorders.

Adjustment disorder (AjD) is one of the most common disorders in clinical practice, and its symptoms are severe enough to cause great distress and functional impairment. The AjD CBT protocol specifically developed for this disorder has shown positive results when delivered face to face and through virtual reality. Despite existing evidence supporting the benefits of therapeutic homework as part of a psychological intervention, little is known about how to increase homework engagement in psychotherapy. This study examines the feasibility (doability, initial efficacy and acceptability) of a digi

Severe and enduring anorexia nervosa? Illness severity and duration are unrelated to outcomes from cognitive behaviour therapy.

OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to examine whether Anorexia Nervosa (AN) illness severity or duration is associated with retention or treatment response in outpatient, enhanced cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT-E). METHOD: Patients with a confirmed AN diagnosis (N = 134) completed measures of eating disorder symptoms and quality of life, and had their BMI objectively measured before, during, and after treatment. We evaluated whether illness severity or duration predicted treatment outcomes, using longitudinal regression models. RESULTS: Greater levels of illness severity and duration were
