Psychological treatments for eating disorders.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review summarizes recent evidence on psychological treatments for eating disorders. RECENT FINDINGS: Eating disorders are serious psychiatric conditions requiring evidence-based intervention. Treatments have been evaluated within each eating disorder diagnosis and across diagnoses. For adults with anorexia nervosa, no one specialist treatment has been shown to be superior. Cognitive behavioral therapy and interpersonal psychotherapy remain the most established treatments for bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder, with stepped-care approaches showing promise and new

Stimulate or degenerate: deep brain stimulation of the nucleus basalis Meynert in Alzheimer dementia.

OBJECTIVE: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a therapeutically effective neurosurgical method originally applied in movement disorders. Over time, the application of DBS has increasingly been considered as a therapeutic option for several neuropsychiatric disorders, including Gilles de la Tourette syndrome, obsessive compulsive disorder, major depression and addiction. Latest research suggests beneficial effects of DBS in Alzheimer dementia (AD). Because of the high prevalence and the considerable burden of the disease, we endeavored to discuss and reveal the challenges of DBS in AD. METHODS: R

Antagonism of L-type Ca(v) channels with nifedipine differentially affects performance of wildtype and NK1R-/- mice in the 5-Choice Serial Reaction-Time Task.

Mice with functional ablation of the substance P-preferring receptor gene ('Nk1r' in mice ('NK1R-/-'), 'TACR1' in humans) display deficits in cognitive performance that resemble those seen in patients with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD): namely, inattentiveness, impulsivity and perseveration. A recent report suggested that the L-type Ca(v) channel blocker, nifedipine, can ameliorate behavioral abnormalities of this type in humans. In light of evidence that NK1R antagonists modulate the opening of these L-type channels, we investigated whether nifedipine modifies %premature res

Identification of MCI individuals using structural and functional connectivity networks.

Different imaging modalities provide essential complementary information that can be used to enhance our understanding of brain disorders. This study focuses on integrating multiple imaging modalities to identify individuals at risk for mild cognitive impairment (MCI). MCI, often an early stage of Alzheimer's disease (AD), is difficult to diagnose due to its very mild or insignificant symptoms of cognitive impairment. Recent emergence of brain network analysis has made characterization of neurological disorders at a whole-brain connectivity level possible, thus providing new avenues for brain

NAP (davunetide) provides functional and structural neuroprotection.

NAP (davunetide) is an eight amino acid peptide (NAPVSIPQ) that has been shown to provide potent neuroprotection, in vitro and in vivo. In human clinical trials, NAP has been shown to increase memory scores in patients suffering from amnestic mild cognitive impairment, a precursor to Alzheimer's disease and to enhance functional daily behaviors in schizophrenia patients. NAP is derived from activity-dependent neuroprotective protein (ADNP) a molecule that is essential for brain formation, interacting with chromatin associated protein alpha and the chromatin remodeling complex SWI/SNF and regul

From surface to nuclear receptors: the endocannabinoid family extends its assets.

Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs) have long been known as mediators of several physiological functions, among which the best characterized are lipid metabolism, energy balance and anti-inflammation. Their rather large and promiscuous ligand binding site has been recently discovered to accommodate, among a plethora of lipid molecules and metabolic intermediates, endocannabinoids and their cognate compounds, specifically belonging to the Nacylethanolamine group. In fact, oleoylethanolamide, palmitoylethanolamide and probably anandamide bind with relatively high affinity to PPAR

[Neurological and psychiatric aspects of some endocrine diseases. The role of neurosteroids and neuroactive steroids].

Regardless of their origin, neuroactive steroids are capable of modifying neural activities by modulating different types of membrane receptors. Neurosteroids are synthesized de novo in neurones and glia. Steroidogenic enzymes are found in the central nervous system. Classical steroid receptors are localized in the cytoplasm, they exert regulatory actions on the genome, and their activation causes medium- and long-term effects. Non-classical receptors are located within the membrane and act as mediators of short-term effects. Other important players are co-repressors and co-activators that can

Role of melatonin in Alzheimer-like neurodegeneration.

Alzheimer disease (AD), an age-related neurodegenerative disorder with progressive loss of memory and deterioration of comprehensive cognition, is characterized by extracellular senile plaques of aggregated beta-amyloid (Abeta), and intracellular neurofibrillary tangles that contain hyperphosphorylated tau protein. Recent studies showed that melatonin, an indoleamine secreted by the pineal gland, may play an important role in aging and AD as an antioxidant and neuroprotector. Melatonin decreases during aging and patients with AD have a more profound reduction in this hormone. Data from clinica

Short birth intervals and the risk of school unreadiness among a Medicaid population in South Carolina.

BACKGROUND: Communities across the United States have become more involved in enhancing school readiness. Many of the predictors of school readiness relate to conditions prior to and following the birth of the child, including a child's birthweight. Shortened birth intervals are related to a variety of health and social consequences that affect child development, yet no formal research has examined the association between birth intervals and school readiness. METHODS: This study was a secondary data analysis of de-identified pregnancy-related vital record information, matched to selected item

The psychopharmacology of ziprasidone: receptor-binding properties and real-world psychiatric practice.

Schizophrenia is a highly complex disorder characterized by a diversity of symptoms, psychotic and nonpsychotic, that most likely arise from heterogeneous neuroanatomical and neurochemical malfunctions. As with all antipsychotic agents, ziprasidone targets the key hypothetical neurochemical disturbance in psychosis-excessive dopamine neurotransmission at dopamine D2 receptors in the mesolimbic pathway of the brain-presumably responsible for the positive symptoms of schizophrenia. Like other atypical antipsychotic agents, ziprasidone is a serotonin-2A (5-HT2A)/dopamine D2 antagonist; however, i

In search of the neurobiological underpinnings of the differential outcomes effect.

Correlating unique rewards with to-be-remembered events (the Differential Outcomes Procedure [DOP]) enhances learning and memory performance in a range of species. Recently, we have demonstrated that the DOP can be used to reduce or eliminate the learning and memory impairments associated with animal models of amnesia and dementia. This powerful phenomenon, the Differential Outcomes Effect (DOE), has led to the question: How does such a simple manipulation exert such dramatic influence on learning and memory performance? A revised two-process account of the DOE states that using the DOP result

Early androgen treatment decreases cognitive function and catecholamine innervation in an animal model of ADHD.

The spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR) has been used as an animal model of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The present study was designed to determine whether exposure to elevated androgen levels early in development demonstrated impairments in cognitive functioning, neuroendocrine control, and brain development parallel to those seen in ADHD children. The animals (SHR and Wistar (WKY) controls) were implanted with testosterone on postnatal day 10 and tested for behavior in a spatial cognition paradigm on postnatal day 45. Plasma samples were collected for determination of a

Intermittent fasting and neuroprotection in Alzheimer's disease: metabolic mechanisms, cellular signaling, and brain-peripheral crosstalk.

Intermittent fasting (IF) promotes a metabolic switch characterized by reduced glucose and insulin availability along with increased lipolysis and ketone body production, particularly β-hydroxybutyrate (βOHB). In the brain, IF enhances metabolic flexibility by facilitating ketone utilization and supporting the astrocyte-neuron lactate shuttle (ANLS), partially compensating for cerebral glucose hypometabolism which is commonly observed in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Beyond bioenergetics, IF activates autophagy and inhibits mTOR signaling, promoting protein clearance and cellular homeostasis. Neur

Self-Supervised Text-Driven Point Cloud Upsampling via Semantic Text Guidance.

Point cloud upsampling is a fundamental task in 3D vision, yet most existing methods adopt a global and uniform strategy, which is computationally inefficient and fails to address the need for region-specific refinement. To address this challenge, we propose PartSPUNet, a novel self-supervised, text-driven point cloud upsampling framework designed to enhance robotic perception through task-oriented local refinement. Inspired by the human cognitive process where high-level language instructions guide visual attention to specific regions of interest, our method allows an operator to use intuitiv

Targeting MEF2A suppresses microglial hyperactivation and synaptic phagocytosis to attenuate epilepsy pathogenesis.

Microglia's role in epilepsy through neuroimmune communication is poorly understood. Mechanisms by which neurons activate microglia and how microglia affect neuronal activity to drive seizure-related inflammation remain unclear. Here, we elucidated a crucial axis connecting pathological adenosine triphosphate (ATP) release induced by epileptiform neuronal activity to microglial MEF2A-dependent hyperactivation, which exacerbates epilepsy pathology. In epilepsy models, seizures cause excessive ATP release, activating microglial P2X7 receptors, causing CAMKII phosphorylation. This triggers HDAC5

AAV-mediated FGF21 gene therapy promotes health span extension by whole-body tissue-specific adaptations.

The decline of organ function during aging limits health span. Despite the potential of lifestyle interventions to improve health, sustained maintenance of health span is challenging, and no gerotherapeutic drugs have been approved. Here, we demonstrated that aged and geriatric male and female mice treated with muscle-directed adeno-associated viral (AAV) vector-mediated fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) gene therapy extended health span and lifespan with sustained organ benefits. This treatment normalized body weight and adiposity, improved insulin sensitivity and glucose homeostasis, prese

Nanotechnological and in vivo characterization of a new generation of brain-permeable nanoparticles for brain-targeted cholesterol delivery in Huntington's disease.

Reduced brain cholesterol synthesis is an early dysfunction that plays a major role in Huntington's disease (HD) pathogenesis. Because the blood-brain barrier (BBB) prevents cholesterol uptake from the circulation, surface-modified, biodegradable, and biocompatible nanoparticles (NPs) that enhance BBB crossing have emerged as promising tools for delivering cholesterol to the brain in HD mouse models. In these models, such NPs have been shown to rescue cognitive, motor, and neuropathological defects. Here, we describe a new formulation of nanoparticles primarily composed of cholesterol and surf
