Iatrogenic Ventriculitis Due to Mycoplasma Hominis: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

BACKGROUND Mycoplasma hominis, which rarely causes infection after neurosurgical procedures, is a small free-living organism, belonging to the genus Mycoplasma. M. hominis lacks a rigid cell wall and cannot be clearly visualized by routine light microscopy. Thus, it is challenging to diagnose infections caused by this pathogen. Here, we report a case of Mycoplasma hominis causing iatrogenic ventriculitis secondary to extraventricular drain. CASE REPORT A 25-year-old man who was a victim of a road traffic accident developed M. hominis ventriculitis secondary to extraventricular drain. Despite a

Mycoplasmosis of House Finches ( Haemorhous mexicanus) and California Scrub-Jays ( Aphelocoma californica) in a Wildlife Rehabilitation Facility with Probable Nosocomial Transmission.

We describe an investigation of an outbreak of conjunctivitis in juvenile House Finches ( Haemorhous mexicanus) and California Scrub-jays ( Aphelocoma californica) at a central California, US wildlife rehabilitation facility. In late May 2015, the facility began admitting juvenile finches, the majority with normal eyes at intake. In June, with juvenile finches already present, the facility admitted juvenile scrub-jays, all with normal eyes at intake. In July, after conjunctivitis was observed in increasing numbers of juvenile finches and scrub-jays, carcasses were submitted for postmortem exam

ESBL- and Carbapenemase-Producing Enterobacteriaceae in Patients with Bacteremia, Yangon, Myanmar, 2014.

Among 42 gram-negative bloodstream isolates from inpatients in 3 hospitals in Yangon, Myanmar, admitted during July-December 2014, 16 (38%) were extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing Enterobacteriaceae and 6 (14%) produced carbapenemase. The high prevalence of multidrug-resistant gram-negative bacteria raises concerns about the empiric treatment of patients with sepsis in Yangon.

Evolving Insights Into the Epidemiology and Control of Clostridium difficile in Hospitals.

Typing studies suggest that most cases of hospital-onset Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) are unrelated to other cases of active disease in the hospital. New cases may instead be due to transmissions from asymptomatic carriers or progression of latent C. difficile present on admission to active infection. Direct exposure to antibiotics remains the primary risk factor for CDI but ward-level antibiotic use, antibiotic exposure of the prior room occupant, and C. difficile status of the prior room occupant increase risk for C. difficile acquisition while antibiotic exposure, gastric acid supp

Stenotrophomonas maltophila cellulitis in an immunocompromised patient presenting with purpura, diagnosed on skin biopsy.

Stenotrophomas maltophilia is an opportunistic Gram-negative bacillus and an important cause of nosocomial infections, particularly in immunosuppressed individuals. Although infections with this organism are most often in the form of pneumonia, bacteremia and endocarditis, awareness of the impact of S. maltophilia skin infections has been increasing. Here we describe a case of S. maltophilia cellulitis in a 65-year-old man with severe neutropenia and purpuric skin lesions to highlight the critical histopathological findings and correlate them with the clinical manifestations of the skin infect

Cost-effectiveness of Ward Closure to Control Outbreaks of Norovirus Infection in United Kingdom National Health Service Hospitals.

BACKGROUND: Norovirus is the most common cause of outbreaks of acute gastroenteritis in National Health Service hospitals in the United Kingdom. Wards (units) are often closed to new admissions to stop the spread of the virus, but there is limited evidence describing the cost-effectiveness of ward closure. METHODS: An economic analysis based on the results from a large, prospective, active-surveillance study of gastroenteritis outbreaks in hospitals and from an epidemic simulation study compared alternative ward closure options evaluated at different time points since first infection, assumin

Co-transmission of Rahnella aquatilis between hospitalized patients.

Rahnella aquatilis is an environmental Gram-negative bacillus that is rarely reported as human pathogen, being mainly associated with infections in immunocompromised patients. Herein we describe two cases of R. aquatilis isolates recovered from endotracheal aspirate cultures of different patients in a tertiary hospital located in the city of São Paulo, Brazil. Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry and 16S rDNA gene sequencing were performed to confirm bacterial identification after the isolates being erroneously identified as Pantoea spp. by automated sys

Aspergillus fumigatus--a ubiquitous foe.

Aspergillus, a fungus whose spores are ubiquitous in the environment, and are normally found in air, can be a significant issue in healthcare premises, and especially in hospital ventilation systems. Here Andrew Poplett, an engineer with over 28 years' healthcare building services engineering experience, and an Authorised Engineer for both specialist ventilation and water quality, explains its occurrence, spread, and prevalence. He discusses how estates and facilities personnel, in conjunction with their clinical and infection control counterparts, can act to control and manage Aspergillus, an

Cervical dysplasia and high-risk human papillomavirus infections among HIV-infected and HIV-uninfected adolescent females in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: HIV-infected adolescents may be at higher risk for high-grade cervical lesions than HIV-uninfected adolescents. The purpose of this study was to compare the prevalence of high-risk HPV (HR-HPV) infections and Pap smear abnormalities between these two groups. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, we compared the HPV DNA and Pap smear results between 35 HIV-infected and 50 HIV-uninfected adolescents in order to determine the prevalence of HR-HPV genotypes and cervical cytological abnormalities. Comparisons were made using Pearson χ (2) and independent-samples t-tests analyses, and

Characterization of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus isolated from tertiary care hospitals in Tokyo, Japan.

The prevalence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) remains problematic in both hospital and community settings. Investigations of MRSA existing in the local area are necessary to understand the detailed epidemiology of healthcare-associated MRSA (HA-MRSA). In the present study, molecular epidemiological analysis was performed on 584 MRSA isolated from four hospitals in Tokyo, Japan. In the pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) analysis, four epidemic pulsotypes (I to IV) were found. The isolates of the epidemic pulsotype I mainly consisted of the SCCmec type II, toxic shock

Telavancin: a review of its use in patients with nosocomial pneumonia.

Telavancin (Vibativ(®)), a lipoglycopeptide antibacterial agent, exhibits potent in vitro activity against Gram-positive bacteria associated with nosocomial pneumonia infections, including meticillin/oxacillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) isolates and S. aureus isolates with reduced susceptibility to vancomycin. In two multinational trials in adult patients with nosocomial pneumonia caused by Gram-positive bacteria, including infections caused by MRSA isolates, a 1-h intravenous infusion of telavancin 10 mg/kg once daily was noninferior to intravenous vancomycin 1 g every 12 h in ter

Appropriate use of indwelling urethra catheters in hospitalized patients: results of a multicentre prevalence study.

BACKGROUND: Although indwelling urethra catheterization is a medical intervention with well-defined risks, studies show that approximately 14-38% of the indwelling urethra catheters (IUCs) are placed without a specific medical indication. In this paper we describe the prevalence of IUCs, including their inappropriate use in the Netherlands. We also determine factors associated with inappropriate use of IUCs in hospitalized patients. METHODS: In 28 Dutch hospitals, prevalence surveys were performed biannually in 2009 and 2010 within the PREZIES-network. All patients admitted to a participating

Risk factors for KPC-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae bacteremia.

The molecular epidemiology of carbapenemase-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae (KPC) has been largely investigated, but limited clinical information is available. A case-control study was performed to evaluate the risk factors for KPC bacteremia in hospitalized patients. Cases were patients with KPC bacteremia and controls were patients with non-KPC bacteremia. A total of 85 patients were included, 18 (21.2%) were KPC, and 67 (78.8%) were non-KPC (40 [59.7%] of them were extended-spectrum beta-lactamase producers). All KPC isolates were type 2 producers. These isolates belong to five distinct clo

Genotyping of Staphylococcus aureus strains among healthcare workers and patients in the tertiary referral Children's Medical Hospital in Tehran, Iran.

Nasal carriage among hospital personnel is an important source of nosocomial staphylococcal infection. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate Staphylococcus aureus nasal colonisation among healthcare workers (HCWs) and its association with infection in children through analysis of antibiotic susceptibility profiles and genetic similarity. Nasal swabs were taken from the anterior nares of HCWs and also a total of 130 strains that had been isolated from various clinical samples were examined. Antibiotic susceptibility profiles of the strains were determined using the disc-diffusion technique and

Antimicrobial use: risk driver of multidrug resistant microorganisms in healthcare settings.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review explores recent evidence on the association between antibiotics usage and resistance. RECENT FINDINGS: A meta-analysis showed that the risk of acquiring methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus was increased by 1.8-fold in patients who had taken antibiotics. Such risk was almost three-times greater after using quinolones or glycopeptides. Significant heterogeneity between studies was mainly related to study designs. A Cochrane systematic review suggested that, although the quality of the evidence was poor, interventions to improve hospital antibiotic prescrib

Managing the microbiological safety of blood for transfusion: a US perspective.

For many decades, infectious disease was considered to be an unfortunate but unavoidable consequence of transfusion. However, since the early 1970s, the sequential introduction of numerous donor screening and testing methods along with continuous improvements has almost, but not completely, eliminated the risk of the classic transfusion-associated infections - syphilis, hepatitis and retroviruses - at least in the developed world. This has, at least in part, led to an increasing focus upon emerging infections: indeed, in the USA over the last few years, testing for West Nile virus (2003) and f
