A 10 kb genomic DNA fragment derived from a human primary liver cell carcinoma (PLC) and containing integrated hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA was cloned and analysed. Physical mapping showed the viral DNA to comprise a linear sequence of at least 2.8 kb (87%) of the HBV genome and to be of the adr subtype. Transmissible retroviruses encoding human hypoxanthine phosphoribosyltransferase (HPRT) were used to infect mouse bone marrow cells in vitro, and the infected cells were transplanted into mice. Both active human HPRT-protein and chronic HPRT-virus production were detected in hematopoietic tissue of the mice, showing transfer of the gene. These results indicate the possible use of retroviruses for somatic cell therapy.

Pseudorabies virus (PRV) is an economically significant swine infectious agent. A PRV outbreak took place in China in 2011 with novel virulent variants. BACKGROUND: Clonorchiasis, caused by the liver fluke Clonorchis sinensis, remains a serious public health issue in Asia, especially in China, and its relationship with cholangiocarcinoma has highlighted the importance of C. sinensis infection. Proteins containing tandem repeats (TRs) are found in a variety of parasites and, as targets of B-cell responses, are valuable for the serodiagnosis of parasite infections. Here, we identified a novel C. sinensis-specific antigen, Cs1, containing TRs, and investigated its diagnostic value, other immunological properties, and tissue distribution.

Most HIV subtypes prevalent in China can be found in Shenzhen, including CRF07_BC, CRF01_AE, CRF08_BC, CRF55_01B, and subtype B. Multiple subtypes spreading in the same population always lead to the emergence of unique recombinant strains. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the impact of hepatic steatosis on virologic response to treatment with pegylated interferon-alpha-2a (PEG-IFNα-2a) in chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 50 biopsy-proven cases of CHB in patients who had been administered a 48-week course of PEG-IFNα-2a in our hospital between 2005 and 2009. Mutations in OPA1 are associated with DOA or DOA plus. Novel mutations in OPA1 are periodically identified, but often the causative effect of the mutation is not demonstrated. A chimeric protein containing the N-terminal region of Mgm1, the yeast orthologue of OPA1, and the C-terminal region of OPA1 was constructed. This chimeric construct can be exploited to evaluate the pathogenicity of most of the missense mutations in OPA1 as well as to determine whether the dominance of the mutation is due to haploinsufficiency or to gain of function.

BACKGROUND: An increase in non-B HIV-1 infections among men who have sex with men (MSM) in the United Kingdom (UK) has created opportunities for novel recombinants to arise and become established. We used molecular mapping to characterize the importance of such recombinants to the UK HIV epidemic, in order to gain insights into transmission dynamics that can inform control strategies.

Molecular analyses of mip and ompA genes were performed on 20 Neisseria gonorrhoeae isolates. The genes were present with a high degree of conservation in all strains.
