Onset-offset cortical auditory evoked potential amplitude differences indicate auditory cortical hyperactivity and reduced inhibition in people with tinnitus.

OBJECTIVE: The current study investigates evidence of hypothesized reduced central inhibition and/or increased excitation in individuals with tinnitus by evaluating cortical auditory onset versus offset responses. METHODS: Cortical auditory evoked potentials (CAEPs) were recorded to the onset and offset of 3-second white noise stimuli in tinnitus and control groups matched in pairs by age, hearing, and sex (n = 26 total). Independent t-tests and 2-way mixed model ANOVA were used to evaluate onset-offset differences in amplitude, area, and latency of CAEP components by group. The predictive in

Noise-induced hearing loss in the pre-industrial era: early contributions in De Morbis Artificum by Bernardino Ramazzini (1633-1714).

OBJECTIVE: Noise-induced hearing loss is the most prevalent occupational disease worldwide and is historically associated with the Industrial Revolution. This study analyses early descriptions of this disorder during the pre-industrial period in the work of the Italian physician Bernardino Ramazzini (1633-1714). METHOD: Primary and secondary historical literature were reviewed. RESULTS: Ramazzini described hearing loss in corn millers and in coppersmiths and recognised that this disorder is irreversible and progressive when exposure to noise continues. He also seemed to describe tinnitus. He

Reduced Intra- and Inter-Network Functional Connectivity Identified in Patients with Tinnitus with and without Hearing Loss.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of the study was to investigate differences in the intra- and inter-network functional connectivity (FC) of the brain using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) in patients with tinnitus, with (T + H) or without hearing loss (T). METHODS: We performed rs-fMRI on 82 participants (21 T, 32 T + H, and 29 healthy controls). An independent component analysis (ICA) was performed to obtain the resting-state networks (RSNs) and calculate the differences in FC. Moreover, we investigated the relationships between networks using functional network connectiv

Prognosis of Acute Low-Tone Hearing Loss Without Vertigo: A Scoping Review.

OBJECTIVE: Despite its relatively high prevalence, our understanding of the natural clinical course of acute low-tone hearing loss (ALHL) without vertigo remains incomplete. The purpose of this study is to summarize the findings of studies that evaluated recovery from hearing loss (HL), recurrence and/or fluctuation of HL, and progression to Meniere's Disease (MD) of patients presenting with ALHL without vertigo. METHODS: A scoping review of the English literature was performed. On May 14, 2020 and July 6, 2022, MEDLINE, Embase, and Scopus were searched to identify articles related to the pro

Blast Overpressures as a Military and Occupational Health Concern.

PURPOSE: This tutorial reviews effects of environmental stressors like blast overpressures and other well-known acoustic contaminants (continuous, intermittent, and impulsive noise) on hearing, tinnitus, vestibular, and balance-related functions. Based on the overall outcome of these effects, detailed consideration is given to the health and well-being of individuals. METHOD: Because hearing loss and tinnitus are consequential in affecting quality of life, novel neuromodulation paradigms are reviewed for their positive abatement and treatment-related effects. Examples of clinical data, resear

Cochlear Implant Compression Optimization for Musical Sound Quality in MED-EL Users.

OBJECTIVES: Variations in loudness are a fundamental component of the music listening experience. Cochlear implant (CI) processing, including amplitude compression, and a degraded auditory system may further degrade these loudness cues and decrease the enjoyment of music listening. This study aimed to identify optimal CI sound processor compression settings to improve music sound quality for CI users. DESIGN: Fourteen adult MED-EL CI recipients participated (Experiment No. 1: n = 17 ears; Experiment No. 2: n = 11 ears) in the study. A software application using a modified comparison category

Enhancing Clinical Visibility of Hearing Loss in Cognitive Decline.

BACKGROUND: Hearing loss is the largest potentially modifiable risk factor for dementia and is highly prevalent among older adults, yet it goes largely unreported, unidentified, and untreated, at great cost to health and quality of life. Hearing screening is a proven cost-effective solution to overcome delays in its identification and management yet is not typically recommended by physicians for older adults. OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate the feasibility and value of hearing screening for older adults at risk for dementia in order to enhance physicians' awareness of hearing loss and improve acces

Sox10 Gene Is Required for the Survival of Saccular and Utricular Hair Cells in a Porcine Model.

Pathological changes of the cochlea and hearing loss have been well addressed in Waardenburg syndrome (WS). However, the vestibular organ malformation in WS is still largely unknown. In this study, the differentiation and development of vestibular sensory epithelium and vestibular function caused by SOX10 mutation, a critical gene induces WS, have been studied in minature pig model. Degeneration of vestibular hair cells was found in this Sox10 mutation porcine model. Inner ear phenotype of the SOX10+/R109W miniature pigs showed cochlear abnormalities as well as saccular hypofunction. In the mu

A 'game of dressings': Strategies for wound management in primary health care.

Wound care management and the dressing of wounds represent some of the most basic services offered in primary health care facilities across Southern Africa. Clinicians should have a basic understanding of the processes of wound healing and wound bed preparation to match the ideal cost-effective dressing to the particular type of wound to be managed. In the 'kingdom of wounds', the authors use a popular analogy and propose the best five strategies for the clinician in choosing the right management option in the 'game of dressings'.

Communities Helping the Hearing of Infants by Reaching Parents (CHHIRP) through patient navigation: a hybrid implementation effectiveness stepped wedge trial protocol.

INTRODUCTION: As the most common neonatal sensory disorder in the USA, infant hearing loss has an incidence of 1.7 per 1000 births. The consequences of delayed diagnosis and failure to obtain timely intervention include significant communication impairment and negative socioeconomic effects. Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) national standards dictate that all infants should be screened and diagnosed by 3 months of age and there is a need for interventions that promote adherence to timely diagnosis. Patient navigation (PN) has been shown to be efficacious to decrease non-adherenc

The emergence of bifurcated structure in children's language.

Human language is unique among animal communication systems, in part because of its dual patterning in which meaningless phonological units combine to form meaningful words (phonological structure) and words combine to form sentences (lexicosyntactic structure). Although dual patterning is well recognized, its emergence in language development has been scarcely investigated. Chief among questions still unanswered is the extent to which development of these separate structures is independent or interdependent, and what supports acquisition of each level of structure. We explored these questions
