Functional evaluation of Bacillus licheniformis PF9 for its potential in controlling enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli in weaned piglets.

During the bacterial selection, isolate PF9 demonstrated tolerance to low pH and high bile salt and an ability to extend the lifespan of Caenorhabditis elegans infected with enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC; P < 0.05). Thirty-two weaned piglets susceptible to ETEC F4 were randomly allocated to four treatments as follows: 1) non-challenged negative control group (NNC; basal diet and piglets gavaged with phosphate-buffered saline), 2) negative control group (NC; basal diet and piglets challenged with ETEC F4, 3 × 107 CFU per pig), 3) positive control (PC; basal diet + 80 mg·kg-1 of avilamy

Assessment of dietary supplementation of green iron oxide nanoparticles: impact on growth performance, ammonia emissions, carcass criteria, tissue iron content, and meat quality in broiler chickens under hot climate conditions.

BACKGROUND: The potential significance and importance of green iron nanoparticles (Nano-Fe) in poultry production lie in their capability to effectively tackle iron deficiency in poultry. Iron, an indispensable mineral for numerous physiological functions in birds, such as oxygen transport, energy metabolism, and immune response, underscores the critical need for adequate iron levels. Nevertheless, conventional iron supplementation methods frequently face hurdles like limited bioavailability rates in poultry. To enhance performance, and promote sustainable broiler productivity, Nano-Fe showed

High Serum Vitamin D Concentrations, Induced via Diet, Trigger Immune and Intestinal Microbiota Alterations Leading to Type 1 Diabetes Protection in NOD Mice.

The hormonally-active form of vitamin D, 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3, can modulate both innate and adaptive immunity, through binding to the nuclear vitamin D receptor expressed in most immune cells. A high dose of regular vitamin D protected non-obese diabetic (NOD) mice against type 1 diabetes (T1D), when initiated at birth and given lifelong. However, considerable controversy exists on the level of circulating vitamin D (25-hydroxyvitamin D3, 25(OH)D3) needed to modulate the immune system in autoimmune-prone subjects and protect against T1D onset. Here, we evaluated the impact of two doses of

Strategies to manage barn feed supply to prolong and hold late finishing pigs during a supply chain disruption.

The U.S. pork production system is sensitive to supply chain disruptions, including those that can create challenges of feed delivery and feed management during the event of a foreign animal disease outbreak. Therefore, the objective was to evaluate feeding strategies during a prolonged feed availability shortage in group-housed finishing pigs and assess the impacts on pig performance. A total of 1,407 mixed-sex pigs (92 ± 11 kg BW) were randomly allocated to one of five treatments across 60 pens (N = 12 pens per treatment, 22 pigs per pen) and were blocked by initial body weight (BW) within t

Impact of sugar beet pulp and wheat bran on serum biochemical profile, inflammatory responses and gut microbiota in sows during late gestation and lactation.

BACKGROUND: Sows are frequently subjected to various stresses during late gestation and lactation, which trigger inflammatory response and metabolic disorders. Dietary fiber can influence animal health by modulating gut microbiota and their by-products, with the effects depending upon the source of the dietary fiber. This study aimed to evaluate the impacts of different fiber sources on body condition, serum biochemical parameters, inflammatory responses and fecal microbiota in sows from late gestation to lactation. METHODS: Forty-five multiparous sows (Yorkshire × Landrace; 3-6 parity) were

Leucine supplementation improves acquired growth hormone resistance in rats with protein-energy malnutrition.

BACKGROUND: Protein-energy malnutrition (PEM) can lead to growth hormone (GH) resistance. Leucine supplementation diets have been shown to increase protein synthesis in muscles. Our study aimed at investigating if long-term leucine supplementation could modulate GH-insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-1 system function and mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR)-related signal transduction in skeletal muscles in a rat model of severe malnutrition. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Male Sprague-Dawley rats (n = 50; weight, 302 ± 5 g) were divided into 5 treatment groups, including 2 control groups (a n

Genotype, dietary manipulation and food allocation affect indices of welfare in broiler breeders.

1. An experiment was performed to compare the welfare of three broiler breeder genotypes (Label Rouge (LA), experimental dwarf (ER) and standard (SR)) fed on a Control or high Fibre diet. The LA birds were fed ad libitum and the other groups were reared to their recommended body weight targets. A group of standard broiler breeders was also fed a restricted amount of food, but to a lesser degree than SR, to achieve the same proportion of body weight (SE) as ER relative to ad libitum-fed dwarfs based on previous research. LA, ER, SR and SE are referred to as 'groups' in the text. 2. Welfare was

Febuxostat alleviate metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis in rat model via targeting inflammation, cell death, and intestinal barrier dysfunction.

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) constitutes a global health threat with its ability to develop into liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Emerging data suggests that oxidative stress and regulated cell death are major driving forces for liver inflammation in MASH. Febuxostat (Feb.), one of the Xanthine oxidase (XO) inhibitors, has shown promise in significantly improving the prognosis of MASH by reducing inflammatory cytokines and cell death. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, we evaluated the therapeutic e

Folic Acid Supplementation Attenuates Hepatic Steatosis by Enhancing Choline Availability and Remodeling Fatty Acid Profiles in Mice Fed a High-Fat Diet.

High-fat diets (HFDs) are a well-established cause of hepatic steatosis, a condition associated with altered hepatic fatty acid metabolism and reduced choline availability. Folic acid (FA) deficiency can also promote steatosis, in part by impairing choline metabolism. Although FA supplementation has been found to reduce liver fat in mice with hepatic steatosis, it is unclear if this effect is due to increased hepatic choline levels, changes in fatty acid profiles, or a combination of both. In this study, four-week-old male C57BL/6J mice were fed 45 kcal% HFDs with total FA content adjusted to

Sirtuin 6-driven ASC deacetylation confers hepatoprotection: A promising approach to inflammasome inhibition in experimental NASH.

Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), a progressive subtype of metabolic-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), is characterized by hepatocellular injury, inflammation, oxidative stress, and fibrosis. Sirtuin 6 (SIRT6), a deacetylase, plays a crucial role in regulating hepatic metabolic and inflammatory pathways. This work assessed the therapeutic potential and underlying mechanism of MDL811, a selective SIRT6 activator, in a rat model of NASH induced by diethylnitrosamine, high-fat diet, and thioacetamide. Rats were treated with MDL811 alone or in combination with the SIRT6 inhibitor SIRT

Purple Corn Extract Prevents Doxo-Induced Cardiotoxicity by Counteracting AMPK Activation and p53 Acetylation in HL-1 and Primary Cardiomyocytes.

Doxorubicin (Doxo) is an anthracycline widely used as a chemotherapeutic agent for many solid and hematological cancers. Its clinical use is limited due to a cumulative dose-dependent and irreversible cardiotoxicity that can cause progressive cardiomyopathy and congestive heart failure. A cardioprotective therapy that can decrease heart damage without reducing the anticancer efficacy during Doxo therapy is of utmost importance. Anthocyanins (ACNs) are renowned cardioprotective agents thanks to their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. An ACN-rich diet from purple corn, which mainly c

Uncovering the pleiotropic effects of oleoylethanolamide on obesity-driven chronic kidney disease in mice.

Metabolic alterations, resulting from obesity, drive chronic kidney disease (CKD) through mechanisms including lipotoxicity, inflammation, and fibrosis. Oleoylethanolamide (OEA), an endogenous compound belonging to the N-acylethanolamine family, has been widely studied for its metabolic properties. However, emerging evidence highlights its anti-inflammatory and anti-fibrotic effects. Here, we explored the effect of OEA on high-fat diet (HFD)-induced renal damage associated with obesity in mice. OEA treatment improved kidney function by restoring urine output and reducing proteinuria and albumi

Metformin-mediated modulation of gut microbiota-derived trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) in myocardial infarction: Insights from in vivo, metabolomics, and in silico studies.

BACKGROUND: Metformin (MET) protects against cardiovascular disorders by improving endothelial function, reducing inflammation, and lowering lipid levels. It is believed to modify gut microbiota, reducing Trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) production, decreasing the risk of atherosclerosis and Myocardial infarction (MI). Yet, the mechanisms behind MET's ameliorative benefits on the gut microbiota and cardiovascular disease remain poorly understood. PURPOSE: This Study focused on evaluating and understanding the mechanisms of MET in MI and gut microbiota using a combined approach of metabolomics an

STUB1 increases adiponectin expression by inducing ubiquitination and degradation of NR2F2, thereby reducing hepatic stellate cell activation and alleviating non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

BACKGROUND: Adiponectin (APN) has exhibited ameliorating effects on non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). This study investigates the roles of APN and its regulatory molecules in hepatic stellate cell (HSC) activation and the progression of NAFLD. METHODS: Mice were subjected to a high-fat diet (HFD) to establish NAFLD models. Liver tissue was examined for lipid metabolism, fibrosis, and inflammation. Mouse 3T3-L1 adipocytes were exposed to palmitic acid (PA) to mimic a high-fat environment. The conditioned medium (CM) from adipocytes was collected for the culture of isolated mouse HSCs.

Biological and behavioral pathways from prenatal depression to offspring cardiometabolic risk: Testing the developmental origins of health and disease hypothesis.

Given prior literature focused on the Developmental Origins of Health and Disease framework, there is strong rationale to hypothesize that reducing depression in the prenatal period will cause improvements in offspring cardiometabolic health. The current review outlines evidence that prenatal depression is associated with offspring cardiometabolic risk and health behaviors. We review evidence of these associations in humans and in nonhuman animals at multiple developmental periods, from the prenatal period (maternal preeclampsia, gestational diabetes), neonatal period (preterm birth, small siz
