Decreased regional cerebral blood flow in patients with diphenylarsinic acid intoxication.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Diphenylarsinic acid (DPAA) intoxication caused by drinking contaminated well water was found in Kamisu, Japan. The symptoms indicated cerebellar-brainstem and temporo-occipital involvement. However, it remains unclear how it affects the human brain. To elucidate the effect of DPAA on the human brain, we analyzed cerebral blood flow (CBF) data after the drinking of DPAA-contaminated water was stopped and investigated the correlation between DPAA exposure level and CBF by single-photon emission computed tomography (CBF-SPECT). METHODS: The DPAA-exposed inhabitants (n = …

Examining the Sexual Health Consequences of Alcohol Consumption Among Black Gay and Bisexual Men.

BACKGROUND: Black men who have sex with men (MSM) are disproportionately affected by HIV infection. Efforts are needed to understand correlates of HIV risk among this group. Alcohol consumption may have a role in HIV transmission given its association with condomless sex. This study aimed to examine the association between alcohol consumption (i.e., drinking before/during sex and levels of alcohol use problems) and condom use during lifetime, past 6 months, and the event (i.e., a specific sexual episode) level. METHODS: Black MSM (N = 102) reported sexual behavior and condom use for lifetime,…

Mental Health Among Jail and Prison Inmates.

Previous studies provide insight into the mental health of jail and prison inmates, but this research does not compare the two groups of inmates. Using data from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study, this article examines how the association between incarceration and self-reported mental health varies by facility type, net of an array of demographic and socioeconomic characteristics. Both jail and prison inmates report high rates of depression, life dissatisfaction, heavy drinking, and illicit drug use. In adjusted logistic regression models, those incarcerated in jails, compared wit…

Paradoxical antidepressant effects of alcohol are related to acid sphingomyelinase and its control of sphingolipid homeostasis.

Alcohol is a widely consumed drug that can lead to addiction and severe brain damage. However, alcohol is also used as self-medication for p … hment of the conditioned behavioral effects of alcohol, and thus drug memories. Opposite effects on drinking and alcohol reward learning were observed in animals with reduced ASM function. Importantly, free-choice alcohol drinking-but not forced alcohol exposure-reduces depression-like behavior selectively in depressed animals through the normalization of …

Features of endothelial dysfunction and morphofunctional changes of the uteroplacental complex in experimentally induced pre-eclampsia.

BACKGROUND: Pre-eclampsia is considered to be a severe complication of pregnancy. Theoretical investigation of its etiology and pathogenesis, development of strategies for its prevention and treatment are conditioned by the development of appropriate experimental models of this pathology. METHODS: The study involved Wistar rat lines weighing 220-240g. Experimental pre-eclampsia was modeled by replacing drinking water consumed by pregnant female rats with 1.8% NaCl solution throughout gestation. Arterial pressure, protein concentration in urine and tissue hydration extent were measured on the …

Maternal heavy alcohol use and toddler behavior problems: a fixed effects regression analysis.

Using data from the longitudinal Norwegian Mother and Child Cohort Study, the aims of the current study were to examine associations between postnatal maternal heavy alcohol use and toddler behavior problems, taking both observed and unobserved confounding factors into account by employing fixed effects regression models. Postnatal maternal heavy alcohol use (defined as drinking alcohol 4 or more times a week, or drinking 7 units or more per alcohol use episode) and toddler internalizing and externalizing behavior problems were assessed when the toddlers were aged 18 and 36 months. Maternal ps…

Occurrence and potential health risk of Cryptosporidium and Giardia in different water catchments in Belgium.

Human wastewater and livestock can contribute to contamination of surface water with Cryptosporidium and Giardia. In countries where a substantial proportion of drinking water is produced from surface water, e.g., Belgium, this poses a constant threat on drinking water safety. Our objective was to monitor the presence of Cryptosporidium and Giardia in different water catchment sites in Belgium and to discriminate between (oo)cysts from human or animal origin using genotyping. Monthly samples were collected from raw water and purified drinking water at four catchment sites. Cryptosporidium and …

Assessing trichloromethane formation and control in algal-stimulated waters amended with nitrogen and phosphorus.

Nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) enrichments can stimulate algal growth in drinking water sources, which can cause increased production of disinfection byproduct (DBP) precursors. However, the effect of systematic N and P enrichments on DBP formation and control has not been adequately studied. In this work, we enriched samples from a drinking water source - sampled on April 5, May 30, and August 19, 2013 - with N and P to stimulate algal growth at N : P ratios covering almost five orders of magnitude (0.2-4429). To simulate DBP-precursor removal processes at drinking water treatment plants (DW…

Dracunculiasis eradication and the legacy of the smallpox campaign: what's new and innovative? What's old and principled?

Coming on the heels the declaration of smallpox eradication in 1980 was the launch of the dracunculiasis (Guinea worm) eradication program, as a key outcome indicator of the success of the United Nations 1981-1990 International Drinking Water Supply and Sanitation Decade (IDWSSD). The dracunculiasis eradication campaign has carried on well beyond the close of the IDWSSD largely due to the efforts of President Jimmy Carter and The Carter Center, to assist the national Guinea Worm Eradication Programs in collaboration with partner organizations, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prev…

Prevention of hospital-acquired legionellosis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The incidence of hospital-acquired legionellosis appears to be increasing. Presence of Legionella in the hospital drinking water is the only risk factor known with certainty to be predictive of risk for contracting Legionnaires' disease. RECENT FINDINGS: Given the high frequency of infection by nonpneumophila and nonserogroup 1 species, both Legionella respiratory culture on selective media and urine antigen testing should be available in the hospital clinical microbiology laboratory. If the drinking water is contaminated by nonpneumophila or nonserogroup 1 species, Legione…

Concurrent treatment for alcohol and tobacco dependence: are patients ready to quit both?

The prevalence of smoking among alcohol abusers is high, yet little is known about this dual-dependency. This study examines mechanisms involved in changing both alcohol and tobacco use concurrently using the transtheoretical model (TTM) measures of change. Alcohol and tobacco dependent outpatients (N=115) entering a dual-substance dependence program were compared on baseline measures of motivation, self-initiated change activities, and self-efficacy associated with each substance use behavior. Differences on these measures were expected for drinking versus smoking. Motivation to change each b…

Coffee and coronary heart disease.

BACKGROUND: The role of coffee consumption in the onset of myocardial infarction remains uncertain. A review of published reports showed that although cohort data suggest very little excess risk of coronary heart disease among habitual coffee drinkers, case-control data suggest an excess risk of the order of 60% for people drinking five or more cups per day. METHODS: We obtained as much information as possible on the lifestyle and habits, including coffee consumption, of people admitted with chest pain to the Coronary Care Unit at the Royal Perth Hospital, Australia. A questionnaire was given…

Alcohol reinforcement and neuropharmacological therapeutics.

The pleasant subjective effects produced by alcohol undoubtedly reinforce drinking behaviour. Alcohol positively reinforces or rewards drinking by producing a mild euphoria. Alcohol also has anxiolytic effects that negatively reinforce drinking. The reinforcing effects of alcohol are mediated by several neurochemical systems, with dopamine and serotonin playing major roles in reward and the gamma-aminobutyric acid-benzodiazepine receptor system playing a major role in negative reinforcement. Research from our laboratory suggests that the behavioural effects of alcohol change when blood alcohol…

Evidence of a relationship between childhood-onset type I diabetes and low groundwater concentration of zinc.

OBJECTIVE: Zinc deficiency has shown to increase the risk for diabetes in diabetes-prone experimental animals. Low concentrations of zinc have also been shown in serum of recent onset cases with IDDM. The present study examines the hypothesis that exposure to a low concentration of zinc in drinking water could increase the risk for future onset of IDDM. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Using the Swedish childhood diabetes registry and data on residence 3 years before the onset of disease, a case-control study was designed comparing cases and control subjects with estimates of groundwater contents…
