Electrooptic Dual-Mode Synergetic Control of Two-Dimensional Nonvolatile Floating-Gate Transistors for Artificial Synapses.

Floating-gate memories based on two-dimensional (2D) materials show great potential for mimicking synapses in artificial neural networks (ANNs), offering a promising pathway toward hardware neuromorphic computing. However, current implementations predominantly rely on electrical modulation, limiting their applications in future artificial visual systems. Here, we demonstrate an electrooptic dual-mode artificial synapse based on a van der Waals heterostructured MoS2 floating-gate transistor. This device uniquely combines electrically controlled nonvolatile programmability with light-tunable mul

Stimulating current direction produces depth-dependent spatial selectivity in cortical activation.

OBJECTIVE: Intracortical electrical stimulation is used to modulate brain activity. However, non-selective neuronal activation limits its efficacy. A biphasic electrical stimulation pulse has cathodic (negative) and anodic (positive) phases; swapping them changes current direction. In computational models, different current directions selectively recruit distinct neuronal populations. Whether this occurs in intracortical stimulation is unknown. We tested in vivo whether current direction affects the recruitment of neuronal populations in the cortex. APPROACH: We implanted 20 anaesthetized rat

High frequency stimulation can block axonal conduction.

High frequency stimulation (HFS) is used to control abnormal neuronal activity associated with movement, seizure, and psychiatric disorders. Yet, the mechanisms of its therapeutic action are not known. Although experimental results have shown that HFS suppresses somatic activity, other data has suggested that HFS could generate excitation of axons. Moreover it is unclear what effect the stimulation has on tissue surrounding the stimulation electrode. Electrophysiological and computational modeling literature suggests that HFS can drive axons at the stimulus frequency. Therefore, we tested the

Neuromodulation of the cervical spinal cord in the treatment of chronic intractable neck and upper extremity pain: a case series and review of the literature.

Electrical spinal neuromodulation in the form of spinal cord stimulation is currently used for treating chronic painful conditions such as complex regional pain syndrome, diabetic neuropathy, postherpetic neuralgia, peripheral ischemia, low back pain, and other conditions refractory to more conservative treatments. To date, there are very few published reports documenting the use of spinal cord stimulation in the treatment of head/neck and upper limb pain. This paper reports a case series of 5 consecutive patients outlining the use of spinal cord stimulation to treat upper extremity pain. All

Interfacing the body's own sensing receptors into neural prosthesis devices.

Functional Electric Stimulation (FES) is today available as a tool in muscle activation used in picking up objects, in standing and walking, in controlling bladder emptying, and for breathing. Despite substantial progress over nearly three decades of development, many challenges remain to provide a more efficient functionality of FES systems. The most important of these is an improved control of the activated muscles. Instead of artificial sensors for feedback, new developments in electrodes to do long-term and reliable recordings from peripheral nerves emphasize the use of the body's own sens…

The C fibre reflex of the cat urinary bladder.

1. Reflexes evoked in bladder parasympathetic neurones by electrical stimulation of bladder C afferent fibres were studied in cats anaesthetized with alpha-chloralose. The responses were compared with the ordinary micturition reflex evoked by low-threshold Adelta afferents from bladder mechanoreceptors and mediated by a spino-ponto-spinal reflex pathway. 2. The bladder was catheterized for fluid instillations and pressure recordings. Efferent reflex discharges were recorded from the cut central end of a small distal bladder branch of the pelvic nerve. The remaining bladder pelvic nerve branche

[Somatosensory evoked potentials: morphology and interareal S1-M1 relationships in the baboon (Papio papio)].

Primary somatosensory potentials (SEPs) were elicited by electrical stimulation of the medial sciatic (proprioceptive) or sural (cutaneous) nerves. They were detected by contacts on SI and MI dura on both cortical sides against a cephalic reference. SEPs were averaged (n = 20). Primary SI SEP consisted of positive, then negative, PI6/N30 waves. N30 was absent from MI records. Local electrocoagulation of the SI cortex on one side has entailed some reduction, but not suppression of together the homolateral MI and contralateral SI and MI SEP. The residual SEPs have increased in latencies by a few

The pupillary light reflex in normal and innate microstrabismic cats, I: Behavior and receptive-field analysis in the nucleus praetectalis olivaris.

Neurons in the nucleus praetectalis olivaris (NPO) were antidromically identified by electrical stimulation of the nucleus of Edinger-Westphal (EW), the location of preganglionic pupilloconstrictor motoneurons. Electrical stimulation within the NPO leads to bilateral pupil constriction. Single neurons recorded in the NPO respond tonically to light stimuli, and their discharge frequency increases linearly with logarithmic increase in light intensity. This characteristic identifies NPO neurons as luminance detectors. They have large receptive fields mostly lying in the upper and contralateral qu

A convergent input from nasal receptors and the larynx to the rostral sensory trigeminal nuclei of the cat.

1. Extracellular recordings were made from ninety-one neurones in the vicinity of the rostral trigeminal nucleus in chloralose-anaesthetized cats. 2. Sixty-two neurones within this area were activated by electrical stimulation of the ipsilateral superior laryngeal nerve (s.l.n.). Only two of the twenty-one neurones tested had an additional input from the contralateral s.l.n. 3. Fifty of these sixty-two neurones were also activated synaptically by light mechanical stimulation of the ipsilateral nasal cavity and in the eight neurones tested electrical stimulation of the ipsilateral nostril evoke

Transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation and stress regulation: preclinical insights and unresolved challenges.

Chronic stress exposure contributes to the onset and maintenance of a wide range of mental and physical disorders. Non-invasive modulation of vagal pathways has received increasing attention as a potential strategy for the prevention and treatment of stress-related conditions, given the central role of the vagus nerve in brain-body communication. By stimulating auricular vagal afferents, transcutaneous auricular vagal nerve stimulation (taVNS) is proposed to engage stress regulatory circuits, with downstream effects that may modulate stress-related physiology. Consistent with this mechanistic

Involvement of the reticulospinal system in the control of locomotion.

Human stepping movements are known to be co-ordinated by a neural coupling of upper and lower limbs. The aim of this study was to evaluate a potential involvement of the reticulospinal system in the interlimb co-ordination by neural coupling during locomotion. During stepping electrical stimuli (ES) were applied to the right tibial nerve to assess the mechanisms underlying neural coupling of lower limbs, and loud acoustic stimuli (LAS) were released, known to activate the reticulospinal system. EMG activity of the tibialis anterior (TA) and gastrocnemius medialis (GM) of both sides was recorde

Transcutaneous cervical vagus nerve stimulation improves sensory performance in humans: a randomized controlled crossover pilot study.

Accurate senses depend on high-fidelity encoding by sensory receptors and error-free processing in the brain. Progress has been made towards restoring damaged sensory receptors. However, methods for on-demand treatment of impaired central sensory processing are scarce. Prior invasive studies demonstrated that continuous vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) in rodents can activate the locus coeruleus-norepinephrine system to rapidly improve central sensory processing. Here, we investigated whether transcutaneous VNS improves sensory performance in humans. We conducted three sham-controlled experiments

Transcutaneous Auricular Vagal Nerve Stimulation Is Effective for the Treatment of Functional Dyspepsia: A Multicenter, Randomized Controlled Study.

INTRODUCTION: Vagal nerve stimulation (VNS) can be used to modulate gastrointestinal motility, inflammation, and nociception. However, it remains unclear whether VNS is effective in adult patients with functional dyspepsia (FD). We investigated the effectiveness of transcutaneous auricular VNS (taVNS) in patients with FD. METHODS: Consecutive patients with FD meeting Rome IV criteria with modified FD Symptom Diary score ≥10 were enrolled. Patients were randomly allocated to 10-Hz taVNS (V10 group), 25-Hz taVNS (V25 group), or sham group, with 30 minutes of treatment twice a day for 4 weeks. T

Non-invasive vagus nerve stimulation and the motivation to work for rewards: A replication of Neuser et al. (2020, Nature Communications).

The vagus nerve is thought to be involved in the allostatic regulation of motivation and energy metabolism via gut-brain interactions. A recent study by Neuser and colleagues (2020) provided novel evidence for this process in humans, by reporting a positive effect of transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) on the invigoration of reward-seeking behaviors, especially for food rewards. We conducted an independent direct replication of Neuser et al. (2020), to assess the robustness of their findings. Following the original study, we used a single-blind, sham-controlled, randomized

A novel ex-vivo isolated rabbit heart preparation to explore the cardiac effects of cervical and cardiac vagus nerve stimulation.

The cardiac responses to vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) are still not fully understood, partly due to uncontrollable confounders in the in-vivo experimental condition. Therefore, an ex-vivo Langendorff-perfused rabbit heart with intact vagal innervation is proposed to study VNS in absence of cofounding anesthetic or autonomic influences. The feasibility to evoke chronotropic responses through electrical stimulation ex-vivo was studied in innervated isolated rabbit hearts (n = 6). The general nerve excitability was assessed through the ability to evoke a heart rate (HR) reduction of at least 5 b

Case report: Dorsal root ganglion stimulator lead fracture.

BACKGROUND: One of the unique advances in neuromodulation for chronic pain has been spinal cord stimulators (SCS) and dorsal root ganglion stimulators (DRG-S). These devices have aided in conditions such as neuropathic pain, complex regional pain syndromes, failed back surgery, and peripheral neuropathies. With these benefits, however, complications from implantable stimulators have included lead fractures and migration. The authors reviewed a lead migration, kinking, and subsequent fracture event involving a patient with complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) II, who was treated with a DRG-S.

No evidence for a modulating effect of continuous transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation on markers of noradrenergic activity.

Although transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) is thought to increase central noradrenergic activity, findings supporting such mechanism are scarce and inconsistent. This study aimed to investigate whether taVNS modulates indirect markers of phasic and tonic noradrenergic activity. Sixty-six healthy participants performed a novelty auditory oddball task twice on separate days: once while receiving taVNS (left cymba concha), once during sham (left earlobe) stimulation. To maximize potential effects, the stimulation was delivered continuously (frequency: 25 Hz; width: 250 μs)
