BACKGROUND: Despite a long period of development, there are still considerable variations in the spectral output, the levels of irradiance, and irradiated area provided by commercial phototherapy systems. These variations depend on the types and output of the lamps used to produce the phototherapy, along with the design of the systems, and principally on whether the phototherapy is provided from overhead or underneath.

Endovascular treatment of carotid stenoses is increasingly used. Frequently temporary occlusion balloons or filters are placed distal to the stenosis to gain additional protection against cerebral emboli. There is still a scientific debate about the usefulness of such distal protection devices. We describe a technique for removing lens fragments dropped into the vitreous cavity during cataract surgery using an optical fiber-free intravitreal surgery system (OFFISS) that was developed for bimanual vitrectomy. The dropped nucleus was removed by 2-port corneal vitrectomy using the OFFISS in 3 patients during complicated cataract surgery. No complications occurred, and good visual recovery was achieved. A multi-functional sorbent is developed for the simultaneous removal of PbCl(2) vapor and sulfur dioxide from the combustion gases.
