Efficient Data-Driven Machine Learning Models for Cardiovascular Diseases Risk Prediction.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are now the leading cause of death, as the quality of life and human habits have changed significantly. CVDs are accompanied by various complications, including all pathological changes involving the heart and/or blood vessels. The list of pathological changes includes hypertension, coronary heart disease, heart failure, angina, myocardial infarction and stroke. Hence, prevention and early diagnosis could limit the onset or progression of the disease. Nowadays, machine learning (ML) techniques have gained a significant role in disease prediction and are an essent

Microvascular Skeletal-Muscle Crosstalk in Health and Disease.

As an organ system, skeletal muscle is essential for the generation of energy that underpins muscle contraction, plays a critical role in controlling energy balance and insulin-dependent glucose homeostasis, as well as vascular well-being, and regenerates following injury. To achieve homeostasis, there is requirement for "cross-talk" between the myogenic and vascular components and their regulatory factors that comprise skeletal muscle. Accordingly, this review will describe the following: [a] the embryonic cell-signaling events important in establishing vascular and myogenic cell-lineage, the

Why Are Perivascular Spaces Important?

Perivascular spaces (PVS) and their enlargement (EPVS) have been gaining interest as EPVS can be visualized non-invasively by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) when viewing T-2-weighted images. EPVS are most commonly observed in the regions of the basal ganglia and the centrum semiovale; however, they have also been identified in the frontal cortex and hippocampal regions. EPVS are known to be increased in aging and hypertension, and are considered to be a biomarker of cerebral small vessel disease (SVD). Interest in EPVS has been significantly increased because these PVS are now considered to

An epidemiological study on skin tumors of the elderly in a community in Shanghai, China.

The morbidity of skin tumors (ST) in China is a great concern as the population ages. No epidemiological survey on ST in elderly communities in China has been reported. A questionnaire survey was conducted among the residents over 60 years old in a community in Shanghai, China from May 1, 2011 to November 30, 2011. The prevalence of cutaneous tumors and associated factors were analyzed. Among 2038 valid cases, a total of 78 (3.8%, 95% CI 3.0-4.7) skin cancers (SC) were confirmed. According to the final multivariate regression analysis, age, gender and previous occupation were the significantly

Unveiling the Enigmatic: A Rare Presentation of Posterior Reversible Encephalopathy Syndrome in a Primigravida With Twin Pregnancy.

Posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES) is a distinctive and challenging neurological condition characterized by a constellation of symptoms, including altered mental status, seizures, headaches, and visual disturbances. It is often associated with abrupt increases in blood pressure or other underlying precipitating factors. While PRES has been recognized for its diverse clinical presentations, it remains an infrequent diagnosis, and its occurrence during pregnancy, especially in primigravida with multiple gestations, is rare. In this context, it is imperative to explore and explic

Utilizing the Precision-Cut Lung Slice to Study the Contractile Regulation of Airway and Intrapulmonary Arterial Smooth Muscle.

Smooth muscle cells (SMC) mediate the contraction of the airway and the intrapulmonary artery to modify airflow resistance and pulmonary circulation, respectively, hence playing a critical role in the homeostasis of the pulmonary system. Deregulation of SMC contractility contributes to several pulmonary diseases, including asthma and pulmonary hypertension. However, due to limited tissue access and a lack of culture systems to maintain in vivo SMC phenotypes, molecular mechanisms underlying the deregulated SMC contractility in these diseases remain fully identified. The precision-cut lung slic

The associations between exercise and lipid biomarkers.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) remain the leading cause of death globally, and further efforts are being undertaken to understand and modify CVD risk factors, such as dyslipidemia (DLD), hypertension, and diabetes. The sedentary lifestyle of most individuals today contributes to the prevalence of these conditions. Uncontrolled dyslipidemia serves as a fertile ground for atherosclerotic plaque formation, while lipoproteins (Lp) act as cofactors for inflammatory processes that cause plaque destabilization leading to subsequent CVD events. As such, many health experts and institutions continue to

Venous endothelial function in cardiovascular disease.

The essential role of the endothelium in vascular homeostasis is associated with the release of endothelium-dependent relaxing and contractile factors (EDRF and EDCF, respectively). Different from arteries, where these factors are widely studied, the vasoactive factors derived from the venous endothelium have been given less attention. There is evidence for a role of the nitric oxide (NO), endothelium-dependent hyperpolarization (EDH) mechanism, and cyclooxygenase (COX)-derived metabolites as EDRFs; while the EDCFs need to be better evaluated since no consensus has been reached about their ide

A Central Role for TRPM4 in Ca2+-Signal Amplification and Vasoconstriction.

Transient receptor potential melastatin-4 (TRPM4) is activated by an increase in intracellular Ca2+ concentration and is expressed on smooth muscle cells (SMCs). It is implicated in the myogenic constriction of cerebral arteries. We hypothesized that TRPM4 has a general role in intracellular Ca2+ signal amplification in a wide range of blood vessels. TRPM4 function was tested with the TRPM4 antagonist 9-phenanthrol and the TRPM4 activator A23187 on the cardiovascular responses of the rat, in vivo and in isolated basilar, mesenteric, and skeletal muscle arteries. TRPM4 inhibition by 9-phenanthr

p53 upregulated by HIF-1α promotes gastric mucosal epithelial cells apoptosis in portal hypertensive gastropathy.

BACKGROUND: Portal hypertensive gastropathy (PHG) is a serious complication of liver cirrhosis and a potential cause of gastrointestinal bleeding. Mucosal apoptosis is an essential pathological feature of PHG. However, whether HIF-1α and p53 are involved in mucosal apoptosis and whether HIF-1α induces PHG by mediating p53 remains unclear. METHODS: Gastric mucosal injury and apoptosis were examined in PHG patients and animal models. The mechanisms of HIF-1α- and p53-mediated apoptosis were analyzed. The GES-1 cell line was used to elucidate the underlying mechanisms using siRNA knockdown of HI

[Normal Tension Glaucoma].

Normal tension glaucoma (NTG) is a subvariant of primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) or a separate entity. NTG is defined as chronic open angle glaucoma without elevated intraocular pressure or normal intraocular pressure. Normal intraocular pressure is between 10 and 21 mmHg and is defined as two times the standard deviation of the mean intraocular pressure in the normal population. In addition to the absence of elevated intraocular pressure, all the classic symptoms of glaucoma are otherwise present. These include a conspicuous glaucomatous optic disc excavation, nerve fibre bundle defects, a

Pediatric tinnitus: The role of neuroimaging.

Tinnitus is defined as the perception of sound without an external source and can be categorized as either pulsatile or nonpulsatile (ie, continuous). A variety of etiologies have been reported to cause pediatric tinnitus, many with long-lasting implications due to hearing and concentration impairments. Therefore, imaging can be an essential part of the accurate and timely diagnosis of treatable etiologies. We describe neuroimaging findings in different etiologies of pediatric tinnitus. Etiologies of pulsatile tinnitus are frequently vascular in nature and include vascular loops, congenital va

Systemic sclerosis-associated pulmonary arterial hypertension in children.

Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a rare disease in childhood and is characterized by a combination of vasculopathy, inflammation, autoimmunity, and fibrogenesis with individually varying expression pattern. Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a serious complication of SSc and affects approximately 10% of SSc patients. SSc-PAH is complex and difficult to diagnose, as symptoms are non-specific and may be complicated by other SSc-associated diseases such as interstitial lung disease or left heart disease. SSc-PAH patients can deteriorate rapidly, and disease progression can occur even in patients

Potential of Sulforaphane as a Natural Immune System Enhancer: A Review.

Brassicaceae are an outstanding source of bioactive compounds such as ascorbic acid, polyphenols, essential minerals, isothiocyanates and their precursors, glucosinolates (GSL). Recently, GSL gained great attention because of the health promoting properties of their hydrolysis products: isothiocyanates. Among them, sulforaphane (SFN) became the most attractive one owing to its remarkable health-promoting properties. SFN may prevent different types of cancer and has the ability to improve hypertensive states, to prevent type 2 diabetes-induced cardiomyopathy, and to protect against gastric ulce

The role of endoglin and its soluble form in pathogenesis of preeclampsia.

Preeclampsia remains till today a leading cause of maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality. Pathophysiology of the disease is not yet fully elucidated, though it is evident that it revolves around placenta. Cellular ischemia in the preeclamptic placenta creates an imbalance between angiogenic and anti-angiogenic factors in maternal circulation. Endoglin, a transmembrane co-receptor of transforming growth factor β (TGF-β) demonstrating angiogenic effects, is involved in a variety of angiogenesis-dependent diseases with endothelial dysfunction, including preeclampsia. Endoglin expression is u

Nephrinuria and podocytopathies.

The discovery of nephrin in 1998 has launched a new era in glomerular diseases research, emphasizing its crucial role in the structure and function of the glomerular filtration barrier. In the past 20 years, substantial advances have been made in understanding podocyte structure and function as well as the discovery of several podocyte-related proteins including nephrin. The glomerular filtration barrier is comprised of podocytes, the glomerular basement membrane and endothelial cells. Podocytes, with their specialized slit diaphragm, form the essential backbone of the glomerular filtration ba
