Body mass correlates inversely with inhibitory control in response to food among adolescent girls: an fMRI study.

Self-report and behavioral data suggest that impulsivity may contribute to the development and maintenance of obesity. Neuroimaging studies implicate a widespread neural network in inhibitory control and suggest that impulsive individuals show hypoactivity in these regions during tasks requiring response inhibition. Yet, research has not directly tested whether body mass correlates inversely with activation of these regions during response inhibition tasks. The present study used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to investigate neural activations during a food-specific go/no-go task

Aberrant brain activation during a response inhibition task in adolescent eating disorder subtypes.

OBJECTIVE: Behavioral and personality characteristics associated with excessive inhibition and disinhibition are observed in patients with eating disorders, but neural correlates of inhibitory control have not been examined in adolescents with these disorders. METHOD: Thirteen female adolescents with binge eating and purging behaviors (i.e., bulimia nervosa or anorexia nervosa, binge eating/purging type);14 with anorexia nervosa, restricting type; and 13 healthy comparison subjects performed a rapid, jittered event-related go/no-go task. Functional magnetic resonance images were collected usi

A new transmission risk index for human African trypanosomiasis and its application in the identification of sites of high transmission of sleeping sickness in the Fontem focus of southwest Cameroon.

A new index for the risk for transmission of human African trypanosomiasis was developed from an earlier index by adding terms for the proportion of tsetse infected with Trypanosoma brucei gambiense group 1 and the contribution of animals to tsetse diet. The validity of the new index was then assessed in the Fontem focus of southwest Cameroon. Averages of 0.66 and 4.85 Glossina palpalis palpalis (Diptera: Glossinidae) were caught per trap/day at the end of one rainy season (November) and the start of the next (April), respectively. Of 1596 tsetse flies examined, 4.7% were positive for Trypanos

Behavioural responses of the snail Lymnaea acuminata to carbohydrates and amino acids in bait pellets.

Snail control could play an important role in programmes against fascioliasis, especially if the methods used for molluscicide delivery could be improved, such as by the development of bait formulations containing both an effective attractant and a molluscicide, to ensure good levels of contact between the molluscicide and the target snail populations. In a recent study, the attractiveness to Lymnaea acuminata (an intermediate host of the digenean trematode Fasciola gigantica) of potential components of snail-attractant pellets was investigated. Carbohydrates (glucose, maltose, sucrose or star

Surgical treatment of ankyloglossia in babies--case report.

Ankyloglossia is an anomaly that is characterized by the abnormal insertion of the lingual frenulum that hinders protrusion and elevation of the tongue towards the palate, due to the short and thick composition of the frenulum. In babies it can cause inefficient nursing at the mother's breast, inadequate transfer of milk and pain in the mother's breast, resulting in early weaning and weight loss. An 8-month-old baby boy was brought to the clinic by his mother because he found it difficult to suck and consequently avoiding breast feeding, and was apparently losing weight. During the clinical ex

Sweet preference, sugar addiction and the familial history of alcohol dependence: shared neural pathways and genes.

Contemporary research has shown that a high number of alcohol-dependent and other drug-dependent individuals have a sweet preference, specifically for foods with a high sucrose concentration. Moreover, both human and animal studies have demonstrated that in some brains the consumption of sugar-rich foods or drinks primes the release of euphoric endorphins and dopamine within the nucleus accumbens, in a manner similar to some drugs of abuse. The neurobiological pathways of drug and "sugar addiction" involve similar neural receptors, neurotransmitters, and hedonic regions in the brain. Craving,

"The way to break the taboo is to do the taboo thing" breastfeeding in public and citizen-activism in the UK.

Like other forms of infant feeding, breastfeeding is a fundamental act of care. Yet despite being the recommended way of feeding babies, breastfeeding is not always easy to do. In addition to lack of support, bio-physical problems and the need to return to work; discomfort with breastfeeding in public is a factor shaping infant feeding choice (and the decision to stop breastfeeding specifically). With increased awareness of breast milk's health benefits in recent years, there has been a rise in efforts to make breastfeeding in public more commonplace and socially acceptable (including through

Utilisation of rodent species by larvae and nymphs of hard ticks (Ixodidae) in two habitats in NE Poland.

The impact of host identity and habitat type on the density of hard ticks (Ixodes ricinus and Dermacentor reticulatus) infections on rodents in forest and abandoned field habitats in NE Poland was investigated. Ixodes ricinus was most abundant in the forest system, but D. reticulatus, although rarer, was most abundant in the field system. Environmental humidity and the much lower density of rodents probably limited the abundance of I. ricinus larvae in the field system, although this tick was still common on Microtus oeconomus from around small ponds. Nymphs of I. ricinus were comparatively ra

Is there a relationship between Internet dependence and eating disorders? A comparison study of Internet dependents and non-Internet dependents.

OBJECTIVES: Coeliac disease (CD) is a chronic autoimmune disease of the small intestine caused by the ingestion of gluten, in which musculoskeletal manifestations may occur. Aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence and severity of joint involvement in paediatric patients with CD using musculoskeletal ultrasound (US). METHODS: Consecutive paediatric CD patients were enrolled and underwent US evaluations at level of knees, hips and ankles. The presence of joint effusion (JE), synovial hypertrophy, power Doppler signal and structural damage lesions (bone irregularities and erosions) was

Care and parentage in a skin-feeding caecilian amphibian.

An exceptional form of parental care has recently been discovered in a poorly known caecilian amphibian. Mothers of the Taita Hills (Kenya) endemic Boulengerula taitanus provide their own skin as a food source for their offspring. Field data suggest that nursing is costly. Females found attending young had a lower body condition and fat body volume than nonbrooding and egg-incubating females, and the female condition decreased substantially during parental care. Most mothers and their eggs or offspring were found in close proximity to other nesting females, in high-density nest sites that enha

The effect of dextromethorphan in preventing cholecalciferol-induced poison shyness and sickness-induced anorexia in the laboratory Norway rat.

BACKGROUND: Overcoming bait and poison shyness is critical to the success of pest control operations against rats and other rodents. The authors hypothesized that the N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor blocker, dextromethorphan, could prevent the acquired memory of sickness and sickness-induced anorexia resulting from rodents eating poisoned bait. RESULTS: Cholecalciferol (1/4 LD(50)) was mixed with dextromethorphan and fed to rats on two 2 day sessions, with an 18 day break in between. Dextromethorphan did not prevent poison shyness; during the second poisoning period, both the cholecalciferol on

Are mosquitoes diverted from repellent-using individuals to non-users? Results of a field study in Bolivia.

Outside sub-Saharan Africa, Anopheline mosquito exophagic and/or crepuscular behaviour patterns imply that insecticide-treated nets may provide incomplete protection from malaria-infective mosquito bites. Supplementary repellent treatment has been recommended in such circumstances, especially where vectors are exophilic and so are not susceptible to residual insecticide spraying. As maintaining complete usage of repellents in a community is unrealistic, the potential negative impact on non-users of repellent usage by 'neighbours' in the same community needs to be addressed in the context of he

Effects of frequent out-of-feed events on growth performance of nursery and grow-finish pigs.

Two experiments were conducted to evaluate effects of out-of-feed events on nursery and grow-finish pig performance. An out-of-feed event is a period of time that pigs do not have access to feed as a result of late feed delivery or bridging in bulk bins, feed lines, or feeders. In these studies, we created an out-of-feed event by removing the feeders from pens or preventing access to the feeder. In Exp. 1, 190 pigs (initially 6.4 +/- 1.6 kg and 21 +/- 3 d of age) were used in a 35-d growth study. Treatments involved a 20-h feed withdrawal for 1, 2, or 3 randomly selected times or a control tre

Mating success of two geographically distinct populations of Gulf Coast ticks, Amblyomma maculatum Koch.

Gulf Coast ticks collected from Refugio Co., TX and Osage Co., KS are reproductively compatible despite differences in genetic haplotypes, geographic separation and seasonal phenologies. Two heifers per mating combination (TX males x TX females, KS males x KS females, TX males x KS females, KS males x TX females) were each infested with 360 pairs of Gulf Coast ticks. Only mean pre-oviposition and mean egg conversion efficiency index for the Texas male-Kansas female mating were significantly different (p<0.05) from other mating treatments. These females began oviposition 1-day later and used 4%

Activity and heart rate in semi-domesticated reindeer during adaptation to emergency feeding.

Although reindeer are well adapted to limited food resources during winter, semi-domesticated reindeer are regularly fed when snow conditions are bad in order to prevent starvation. Feeding sometimes results in health problems and loss of animals. This study was made to assess if activity pattern in reindeer could be used as a tool for the reindeer herder in early detection of animals that are not adapting to feeding. The frequency of 10 behavioural categories was recorded in five groups of penned, eight-month-old, female semi-domesticated reindeer. Three reindeer per group were fitted with he

[Clinical features and diagnostic criteria of bulimia nervosa].

Based on the results of the clinical follow-up study of 41 female patients, diagnostic criteria of bulimia nervosa that should be used in clinical studies are suggested as follows: (1) presence of anorexia nervosa or transitory amenorrhea in the premorbid period; (2) eating attacks with losing of the control over food consumption not less than twice a week during 3 months; (3) compensatory behavior in the form of spontaneous vomiting, abuse of purgative and diuretic medications etc; (4) fear of obesity; (5) cycloid affective changes with higher impulsivity, reduction of the control over primit

Suicide and deliberate self-harm in personality disorders.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This article reviews literature published over the period January 2004-May 2005 on suicidal behaviour and self-harm in personality disorders. RECENT FINDINGS: Studies have confirmed that personality disorders and their co-morbidity with other psychiatric conditions are risk factors for both fatal and nonfatal suicidal behaviours, and self-mutilation. Negative life events, childhood sexual abuse, difficulties in social functioning, deficits in future-directed thinking and time perception, as well as familial and neurocognitive factors may be related to increased suicide risk

Immediate nipple pain relief after frenotomy in breast-fed infants with ankyloglossia: a randomized, prospective study.

PURPOSE: Ankyloglossia ("tongue-tie") occurs in nearly 5% of neonates, but its clinical significance relating to breast-feeding difficulties is controversial. We tested the hypothesis that in infants with ankyloglossia referred because of breast-feeding difficulties, frenotomy alleviates the symptoms. METHODS: Twenty-five mothers of healthy infants with ankyloglossia were recruited because of sore nipples. Infants were randomized to either of 2 sequences: (1) frenotomy, breast-feeding, sham, breast-feeding (n = 14) or (2) sham, breast-feeding, frenotomy, breast-feeding (n = 11). The mothers a
