Associations of prenatal alcohol exposure in speech, language, behavioral, and intellectual development were investigated in three school-aged children diagnosed with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, accompanied by Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Each child showed similar patterns of moderate-to-severe dysfunctional behavior; however, their scores on speech, language and nonverbal intellectual measures were highly variable.

We report on a female infant with severe microcephaly, scalp rugae, overlapping sutures, and telancephalic damage with relatively satisfactory early motor development. This case represents a milder form of the 'fetal brain disruption sequence', which is thought to be the result of an exogenous insult to the developing brain during the second half of gestation.

Exposure of the fetus at any gestational stage to high concentrations of alcohol can adversely affect growth, morphology, and neurophysiologic development. Sustained heavy drinking can result in the fetal alcohol syndrome. Cessation of heavy drinking during pregnancy will benefit both mother and child. Primary health care providers can effectively identify and treat women at risk.

Despite the concerns about prenatal exposure to ionizing radiation, the number of nuclear medicine examinations performed for pregnant women increased in the past decade. This study attempts to better quantify radiation doses due to diagnostic nuclear medicine procedures during pregnancy with the help of our recently developed 3, 6, and 9 month pregnant hybrid phantoms. The reference pregnant models represent the adult female international commission on radiological protection (ICRP) reference phantom as a base template with a fetus in her gravid uterus. Six diagnostic scintigraphy scans using

BACKGROUND: Maternal vitamin D concentration has been linked to various health outcomes, but its associations with obstetric outcomes, infant growth, and cord blood cytokines remain inconclusive.
METHODS: We conducted an observational study including 132 pregnant women whose serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] levels were measured in the third trimester. After delivery, cord blood cytokines related to fetal growth were measured. Participants were divided into quartiles based on 25(OH)D concentration. Infant anthropometric indicators were analyzed using WHO-standardized Z-scores for length, we

Findings for greenspace's impacts on birth outcomes are largely dependent on vegetation indexes. Examinations are needed for various greenspace indicators given varying pathways for fetal development. This prospective cohort study assessed the impacts of prenatal greenspace exposure on preterm birth (PTB), term low birthweight (TLBW), birthweight, and estimated fetal weight (EFW) for pregnant women in the New York City area, 2016-2023 (n = 2765). Longitudinal greenspace exposure was measured for residential histories during pregnancy using the enhanced vegetation index for 1000 m buffers and f…

Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) occurs both in humans and domestic species. It has a particularly high incidence in pigs, and is a leading cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality as well as impaired postnatal growth. A key feature of IUGR is impaired muscle development, resulting in decreased meat quality. Understanding the developmental origins of IUGR, particularly at the molecular level, is important for developing effective strategies to mitigate its economic impact on the pig industry and animal welfare. The aim of this study was to characterise transcriptional profiles in the mu

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this work was to compare the accuracy of the cerebroplacental ratio (CPR), Intergrowth 21st standards (IG21), customized growth (CG), and local population references (LPR) in the prediction of intrapartum fetal compromise (IFC).
METHODS: This was a prospective study of 714 fetuses that underwent an ultrasound examination at 34-41 weeks and were delivered within a 2-week interval. The CPR was converted into multiples of the median and the estimated fetal weight (EFW) transformed into CG, IG21, and LPR centiles. IFC was defined as a composite of abnormal cardiotocogram, in

Objective: Studies of maternal serum uric acid (UA) in pregnancy focus primarily on high levels of UA, however, both low and high UA levels can be markers of oxidative stress, a biological state potentially linked to fetal growth. We therefore aimed to test whether low and high maternal serum UA levels during pregnancy are associated with atypical fetal growth (unusually small or large) measured as birthweight (BW) for gestational age. Methods: The Pregnancy Outcomes and Community Health Study enrolled 3019 pregnant women between their 16th-27th week of pregnancy from 52 clinics in five Michiga

OBJECTIVES: To examine the associations of maternal intake of fruits and vegetables (FVs), considering pesticide residue levels, with fetal growth.
METHODS: We studied 1777 mothers (1275 white, 502 non-white) and their infants from Project Viva, a prospective pre-birth cohort (1999-2002). We categorized FVs as containing high or low pesticide residues using data from the US Department of Agriculture. We then used a food frequency questionnaire to estimate each participant's intake of high and low pesticide residue FVs in the first and second trimester. The primary outcomes were small-for-gest

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate insular cortical morphometry assessed by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in late-onset small-for-gestational-age (SGA) fetuses compared with controls, and its association with neurobehavioral outcomes.
METHODS: MRI was performed in 65 late-onset SGA and 59 normally-grown fetuses at 37 weeks' gestation. T2-weighted half Fourier acquisition single-shot turbo spin echo (HASTE) anatomical and diffusion-weighted images were acquired. Insular cortical thickness, volume and fractional anisotropy values were assessed, and asymmetry indices were constructed. At 42 weeks of age,

OBJECTIVE: To review the available literature on outcome of pregnancy when an isolated single umbilical artery (iSUA) is diagnosed at the time of the mid-trimester anomaly scan.
METHODS: We searched MEDLINE (1948-2012), EMBASE (1980-2012) and the Cochrane Library (until 2012) for relevant citations reporting on outcome of pregnancy with iSUA seen on ultrasound. Data were extracted by two reviewers. Where appropriate, we pooled odds ratios (ORs) for the dichotomous outcome measures: small for gestational age (SGA), perinatal mortality and aneuploidy. For birth weight we determined the mean dif

Although the mammalian embryo is well protected in the uterus, environmental chemicals, drugs, and maternal nutritional imbalances can interfere with regulatory pathways directing placental and embryonic development early in gestation. Embryonic cells are most susceptible to environmental influences during cellular specification and differentiation stages. Because biochemical differentiation precedes morphological outcome often by days, the period of susceptibility to environmental chemicals expectedly precedes visible morphogenic effects. The cellular mechanisms by which drugs and other envir

BACKGROUND: Fetal growth restriction has been inconsistently associated with maternal exposure to elevated levels of traffic-related air pollution.
OBJECTIVE: We investigated the relationship between an individualised measure of fetal growth and maternal exposure to a specific marker for traffic-related air pollution.
METHODS: We estimated maternal residential exposure to a marker for traffic-related air pollution (nitrogen dioxide, NO2) during pregnancy for 23,452 births using temporally adjusted land-use regression. Logistic regression was used to investigate associations with small for ge

The 'thrifty phenotype' hypothesis proposes that the fetus adapts to an adverse intrauterine milieu by optimizing the use of a reduced nutrient supply to ensure survival, but by favoring the development of certain organs over that of others, this leads to persistent alterations in the growth and function of developing tissues. This concept has been somewhat controversial, however recent epidemiological, clinical, and animal studies provide support for the developmental origins of disease hypothesis. Underlying mechanisms include reprogramming of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, islet d

The association between low birth weight and schizophrenia has been suggested by many studies. Small for gestational age (SGA) is a measure used as a proxy for intrauterine growth restriction. We aim to examine if children who are born SGA are at increased risk of developing schizophrenia and whether an association may be explained by factors shared among siblings. We linked 3 population-based registers: the Danish National Medical Birth Register, the Danish Psychiatric Central Register, and the Danish Civil Registration register to identify all persons born between 1978 and 2000. A nested cas

INTRODUCTION: Premature infants, especially very low birth weight infants, and fetal growth restriction are a challenge for healthcare professionals alike owing to the consequences of these conditions.
OBJECTIVE: To provide information for gynecologists, pediatricians and neonatologists to identify correct outcome expectations to help them plan their preventive and therapeutic actions. Searches were made on the MEDLINE database.
RESULTS: According to several follow-up studies, there is an increasing evidence for a link between early life exposures (prenatal and postnatal) and long-term outco

BACKGROUND: The rationale for fetal surveillance in monochorionic twin pregnancies is timely intervention to prevent the increased fetal/perinatal morbidity and mortality attributed to twin-twin transfusion syndrome and intrauterine growth restriction. We investigated the residual risk of fetal death after viability in otherwise uncomplicated monochorionic diamniotic twin pregnancies.
METHODS AND FINDINGS: We searched an electronic database of 480 completed monochorionic pregnancies that underwent fortnightly ultrasound surveillance in our tertiary referral fetal medicine service between 1992
