A developmentally regulated carboxypeptidase was purified from hyphae of the dimorphic fungus Mucor racemosus. The enzyme, designated carboxypeptidase 3 (CP3), has been purified greater than 900-fold to homogeneity and characterized. The carboxypeptidase migrated as a single electrophoretic band in isoelectric focusing polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE), with an isoelectric point of pH 4.4. A fraction separated from rat submandibular gland homogenates was found to contain a potent vasoconstrictor when tested on isolated rabbit aortic rings. A long-term evaluation was made of results achieved in direct bonding of metal attachments with a chemically polymerized composite material. A total of 705 attachments were bonded to different teeth, including premolars and molars, in forty-six children. Slim bracket bases, small quantities of adhesive paste, and trimming of the excess material were used to improve esthetics and to benefit in respect of gingival condition. We compared the structural properties of myosin subfragment 1 (S1) modified at both reactive SH-groups, SH1 (Cys707) and SH2 (Cys697), with the properties of unmodified S1 and SH1-modified S1. Toothbrushing with toothpaste is the most widely used method of home dental care for the populations of the Western world. The traditional role of toothpaste is primarily cosmetic, in aiding the cleaning of teeth and producing fresh breath. Today, however, formulations contain ingredients which may also help oral health by way of reducing dental plaque and improving gingival/periodontal health. This article provides a short review on the usefulness of these chemicals when used primarily in toothpastes.
