Traditional massage of newborns in Nepal: implications for trials of improved practice.

Mustard oil massage of newborns is an integral component of traditional care practices in many communities. Recent evidence suggests that this practice may have detrimental effects, particularly for preterm infants or for those whose skin barrier function is otherwise sub-optimal. Other natural oils such as sunflower, sesame or safflower seed oil may have a beneficial impact on newborn health and survival. Little is known, however, about cultural and other factors related to the acceptance and uptake of alternative, more beneficial oils for massage of the newborn. A questionnaire concerning th

Awareness of human papillomavirus among women attending a well woman clinic.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the level and accuracy of public understanding of human papillomavirus (HPV) in the United Kingdom. METHODS: Women attending a well woman clinic were asked to complete a questionnaire assessing HPV awareness and specific knowledge about the virus. RESULTS: Questionnaires were completed by 1032 women, of whom 30% had heard of HPV. Older women, non-smokers, and those with a history of candida, genital warts, or an abnormal smear result were more likely to have heard of HPV. Even among those who had heard of HPV, knowledge was generally poor, and fewer than half were aware

Involvement of women in community-directed treatment with ivermectin for the control of onchocerciasis in Rukungiri district, Uganda: a knowledge, attitude and practice study.

A study of knowledge, attitudes and practice was carried out in the Rukungiri district of Uganda, in order to investigate the involvement of women in community-directed treatment with ivermectin (CDTI), for the control of onchocerciasis. The data analysed came from interviews with 260 adult women (one from each of 260 randomly-selected households in 20 onchocerciasis-endemic communities), community informants, and participatory evaluation meetings (PEM) in eight communities. The women who had been treated with ivermectin in 1999 generally had more knowledge of the benefits of taking ivermectin

Female condoms.

Early versions of a female condom were available in the 1920s and 1960s, but they were little used and soon forgotten. It took the arrival of AIDS, and the urgent need for a wider range of female-controlled barrier techniques, to rekindle scientific interest in this method. In the 1980s, three groups in Europe and the USA began development of new female condom designs, comprising 'Femidom (Reality)', the 'Bikini Condom', and 'Women's Choice'. Apart from differences in their physical design, Femidom differs from the others in that it is made of a polyurethane membrane, which has several advanta

An examination of differential follow-up rates in breast cancer screening.

This study was designed to test the hypothesis that follow-up rates for women with abnormal breast screening results would vary by age, ethnicity and initial screening results in California's Breast Cervical Cancer Control Program. The sample was composed of women in this screening program who had received abnormal clinical breast exam (N = 5239) or mammography results (N = 1202). Chi-squared analysis showed significant differences by age and initial screening results but in logistic regression analysis the only demographic variable to retain significance in analysis was age, although size of

Therapeutic approaches to neonatal jaundice: an international survey.

Jaundice is one of the most common clinical phenomena in the neonatal period and a frequent indication for treatment with phototherapy, exchange transfusion, or drugs. The present study documents the variability in approaches to the treatment of this condition. A mail questionnaire was sent to neonatal units worldwide. One hundred and eight answers (49% response rate) were received from Europe (n = 72), North America (n = 28), Africa (n = 7), and Asia (n = 1). The neonatal intensive care units represented by the respondents had 31 +/- 18 beds [mean +/- SD], and 638 +/- 519 admissions per year.

This study aimed to assess knowledge, perceptions, and attitudes toward Mpox disease, vaccination, and preventive practices among undergraduate students in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted between October 2024 and March 2025 among 810 undergra

Exploring the Male Perspectives Regarding the Need for Postpartum Contraception in Their Female Partners: A Cross-Sectional Study Among Husbands in India.

Background Postpartum contraception is vital for maternal and neonatal health. In India, male partners play a decisive role in reproductive choices, yet their perspectives on postpartum contraception remain underexplored. Understanding men's knowledge, beliefs, fears, attitudes, and practices is crucial for improving contraceptive uptake and promoting shared decision-making in family planning. We aimed to design a study to explore Indian men's perspectives regarding postpartum contraception. Materials and methods A cross-sectional, questionnaire-based study was conducted over one year at a ter
