Variability of environmental exposures to volatile organic compounds.

Although studies of occupational exposure to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) often partition variability across groups, and between and within persons, those of environmental exposure to VOCs have not involved such partitioning. Using data from the Environmental Protection Agency's total exposure assessment methodology (TEAM) studies, we partitioned exposure variability across cities, and between and within persons for nine VOCs. The estimated variance components decreased in the order: within-person > between-person > across city. Despite their smaller magnitudes, estimates of between-perso

Risk of spontaneous abortion and maternal exposure to organic solvents in the shoe industry.

OBJECT: A high risk of spontaneous abortion was observed in women exposed to organic solvents during pregnancy. Since this risk was not found in the shoe industry, where these solvents are widely used, we carried out a case-control study on the risk of spontaneous abortion in a health district (Veneto, Northern Italy) where about 8,000 people work in shoe manufacturing. Aliphatic hydrocarbons were generally used; their concentrations were repeatedly below the mixture TLVs in the observation period. METHODS: Cases (clinically recognized spontaneous abortion, ICD codes 632-634-636) and age-/yea

Assessing human exposure to power-frequency electric and magnetic fields.

This paper reviews published literature and current problems relating to the assessment of occupational and residential human exposures to power-frequency electric and magnetic fields. Available occupational exposure data suggest that the class of job titles known as electrical workers may be an effective surrogate for time-weighted-average (TWA) magnetic-field (but not electric-field) exposure. Current research in occupational-exposure assessment is directed to the construction of job-exposure matrices based on electric- and magnetic-field measurements and estimates of worker exposures to che

How perceived social support mitigates occupational stress and enhances psychological well-being in nurses returning to work after childbirth.

BACKGROUND: The return to work from maternity leave is a time when the professional demands overlap with the new responsibilities of caring for children, which may result in psychological stress for nurses. Perceived social support can be a protective resource to buffer stress and promote adaptation. OBJECTIVE: To determine if perceived social support would moderate the relationship between occupational stress and psychological well-being for nurses who returned to work after childbirth. METHOD: A cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out in ten health care facilities in Dakahlia Gov

An integrated LC-MS/MS workflow for multi-matrix determination of glyphosate and aminomethylphosphonic acid for occupational exposure assessment.

Glyphosate, a widely used herbicide in agricultural and forestry settings, raises significant concerns regarding potential occupational exposure. However, comprehensive exposure assessment integrating biological and environmental monitoring remains limited, partly due to the lack of analytical workflows capable of supporting multiple sample matrices on a single platform. Here, we developed and validated a high-throughput derivatization-free LC-MS/MS workflow for the determination of glyphosate and aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA) in urine, surface wipes, patches and breath zone air monitoring

Relationship Between Caregiver Burden and Sense of Coherence in Home-Based Family Caregivers.

OBJECTIVES: Family caregivers often face significant challenges, such as insufficient sleep, fatigue due to aging, difficulty engaging in social activities, and fewer interactions with friends and neighbors. However, some family caregivers manage to maintain active lifestyles while providing home care. This study is aimed at exploring the relationship between family caregivers' sense of coherence (SOC) and their perception of caregiving burden. METHODS: This cross-sectional study recruited 74 family caregivers of community-dwelling older adults who used day-care insurance services; 64 were in

Forecasting COVID-19, influenza, and RSV hospitalizations over winter 2023-4 in England.

BACKGROUND: Seasonal respiratory viruses cause substantial pressure on healthcare systems, particularly over winter. System managers can mitigate the impact on patient care when they anticipate hospital admissions due to these viruses. Hospitalization forecasts were used widely during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. Now, resurgent seasonal respiratory pathogens add complexity to system planning. We describe how a suite of forecasts for respiratory pathogens, embedded in national and regional decision-making structures, were used to mitigate the impact on hospital systems and patient care. METHODS: W

Dwellings occupied by mobility-limited older people emerge as strong control centers and more age-friendly places.

The future will witness the substantial worldwide growth of older people with functional limitations or disabilities who have difficulties leaving their dwellings and traveling to their neighborhoods or other community destinations to realize their obligatory and discretionary needs and goals. This commentary offers conceptual arguments and literature findings proposing that the dwellings of this vulnerable population deserve new scrutiny because they have become more salient and positively experienced places to live where their occupants can maintain their independence and age in place. Application of Pattern Mining Methods to Assess Exposures to Multiple Airborne Chemical Agents in Two Large Occupational Exposure Databases from France.

Surveys of the French working population estimate that approximately 15% of all workers may be exposed to at least three different chemical agents, but the most prevalent coexposure situations and their associated health risks remain relatively understudied. To characterize occupational coexposure situations in France, we extracted personal measurement data from COLCHIC and SCOLA, two large administrative occupation exposure databases. We selected 118 chemical agents that had ≥100 measurements with detected concentrations over the period 2010-2019, including 31 carcinogens (IARC groups 1, 2A,
