The use of probiotics - live microorganisms - to enhance growth and prevent disease in mariculture species is an emerging alternative to conventional methods including antibiotics, vaccines and chemical intervention. While others have reviewed specific host organisms and probiotic genera, this review synthesises the scientific literature on the use of probiotics across a range of marine organisms to identify knowledge gaps and research opportunities. We identified widespread methodological heterogeneity, making direct inter-study comparisons difficult. Despite this limitation, 86% of in vivo s

BACKGROUND: Branched receptor-binding protein (RBP) systems enable bacteriophages to broaden their host range through the incorporation of two or more RBPs. Using the Klebsiella podophages KP32, K11, and KP34 as model systems, we experimentally validated the interaction between the branching domain of the primary RBP (RBP1) and the conserved docking peptide of the secondary RBP (RBP2) as an essential architectural pair enabling dual-RBP incorporation into the virion.
RESULTS: Systematic engineering revealed that loss of either of these domains, the branching domain or the conserved peptide, a

Seasonal variation in food resources represents a major ecological challenge for wild herbivores, yet how naturally selected dietary resources become associated with host and microbial responses remains poorly understood. During winter, Brandt's voles (Lasiopodomys brandtii) cache large amounts of Artemisia frigida, suggesting that this plant may have ecological significance beyond its nutritional value. However, the biological basis underlying this seasonal food preference remains unclear. Here, using Brandt's voles as a model system, we investigated whether the naturally selected winter food

Leaf variegation in Aspidistra elatior provides a useful system for exploring localized plant-microbiome associations, yet the biological factors linked to sector-specific chlorosis remain unclear. To investigate potential relationships among endophytic microbial communities, host transcriptomic responses, and metabolic variation, we integrated 16S/ITS amplicon sequencing, transcriptomics, and widely targeted LC-MS/MS-based metabolomics across normal green (GG), adjacent green (SG), and chlorotic spot (SS) sectors. SS sectors showed sector-associated bacterial community patterns characterized

The mammalian gut microbiota is a complex and dynamic "microbial organ" that interacts with its host. The gut microbiota contains a vast gene pool and metabolic capacity, producing key metabolites such as short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), bile acids, vitamins, and other compounds. These metabolites regulate core physiological functions like energy metabolism, immune homeostasis, and neural behavior via the gut-brain axis (GBA), immune signaling networks, and other pathways. This review explores the bidirectional regulatory role of the gut microbiota. The gut microbiota influences the host's met

Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus (PEDV) causes highly contagious intestinal disease in swine and results in severe economic losses worldwide. PEDV Nsp3, a nonstructural protein produced in the early stage of viral replication, is responsible for cleaving polyproteins to generate nonstructural proteins and the replication-transcription complex, as well as inducing the formation of coronavirus replication organelles known as double-membrane vesicles (DMVs). Nsp3 is a key protein for viral replication; however, its specific mechanism of action remains unclear. To investigate the role of Nsp3 durin

Xanomeline-trospium is a first-in-class muscarinic receptor-based antipsychotic that improves schizophrenia symptoms without dopamine D2 receptor antagonism. Although gastrointestinal (GI) adverse effects have been reported, its broader effects on host microbiota and susceptibility to respiratory injury remain unclear. We investigated the effects of xanomeline and xanomeline-trospium on gut and lung microbiota, host metabolism, and outcomes in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced acute lung injury (ALI) in male and female mice. Adult mice received vehicle, xanomeline, or xanomeline-trospium for 15

The aim of this investigation was to analyze predilection sites of ticks on avian hosts according to tick species and developmental stages, as well as individual and ecological characters of bird species (i.e., their age, habitat type, seasonality). For this, 916 ticks were removed from 289 birds in Hungary at 23 different places in the course of one year. The location of ticks on birds was recorded whenever possible. Ticks were identified as Ixodes ricinus (n=595), Ixodes frontalis (n=34), Ixodes arboricola (n=21), Ixodes acuminatus (n=1), Haemaphysalis concinna (n=246), Haemaphysalis punctat

Fusobacterium nucleatum (Fn) has emerged as one of the most extensively studied tumor-associated opportunistic pathogens in colorectal cancer (CRC). The central question in Fn-CRC research has shifted from species-level detection or enrichment toward identifying specific lineages with enhanced persistence and tumor-promoting potential under defined host and ecological contexts. Accumulating evidence suggests substantial heterogeneity within Fn at the subspecies and clade levels. Among these, the F. nucleatum subsp. animalis C2 (Fna C2) lineage has been proposed as a candidate high-risk clade w

Bacterial pathogens that infect host sites beyond their native ecological niche must be equipped to cope with unique challenges across distinct environments. This often manifests in the upregulation of virulence factors specifically in response to host cues, which enhance pathogen fitness. Extraintestinal pathogenic Escherichia coli (ExPEC) typically colonise the host-gut asymptomatically but can disseminate to infectious sites such as the bladder, kidneys and bloodstream. The molecular basis of urinary tract colonisation by ExPEC is well established, with adhesion via chaperone-usher fimbriae

INTRODUCTION: Plant pathogens pose a critical threat to global agriculture by significantly reducing crop productivity through the negative impact on plant physiology and associated microbial communities. Grapevines (Vitis vinifera), a high-value crop worldwide, are highly susceptible to a range of bacterial and fungal vascular pathogens. In this study, we investigated the effects of five major grapevine pathogens-Diplodia seriata, Eutypa lata, Neofusicoccum parvum, Phaeoacremonium minimum, and Xylella fastidiosa-on host microbiome composition and phenolic secondary metabolite profiles across

Tuberculosis (TB), caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, remains a major global health challenge, exacerbated by prolonged treatment regimens, variable vaccine efficacy, and the emergence of drug-resistant strains. Beyond conventional pathogen-targeted antibiotics, increasing attention has focused on host-directed therapies (HDTs) that aim to enhance intrinsic immune mechanisms to improve disease control and treatment outcomes. Among these, autophagy, a conserved cellular process responsible for the degradation and recycling of damaged organelles, proteins, and intracellular pathogens, has eme

Duck plague virus (DPV) is a highly contagious pathogen that causes severe immunosuppression and high mortality in waterfowl, resulting in substantial economic losses to the poultry industry. However, the mechanisms by which DPV evades host innate immune responses remain incompletely understood. In this study, we investigated the role of the DPV tegument protein US2 in regulating host antiviral responses. pUS2 significantly suppressed IFN-β promoter activation induced by poly(I:C) and poly(dA:dT) and reduced the transcription of IFN-β and interferon-stimulated genes (ISGs), including OASL and

The integration of RNA- and DNA-based assays enables the investigation of disease dynamics, specifically assessing the role of asymptomatic or subclinical infections in malaria transmission. Circular RNAs (circRNAs), a distinct category of noncoding RNAs, are implicated in numerous pathogenic mechanisms. As of now, research has yet to explore circRNAs' function in malaria infection. The findings revealed that Plasmodium infection upregulated 60 circRNAs and downregulated 71 in BALB/c mice. We selected 11 differentially expressed (DE) circRNAs according to function prediction of target miRNA-mR

Influenza A viruses (IAVs) in swine have zoonotic potential and pose a continuous threat of causing human pandemics, as demonstrated by the H1N1 pandemic in 2009. Despite increased genomic surveillance, we have limited knowledge of the IAV evolutionary dynamics leading to such zoonotic events and no clear understanding of genetic markers associated with interspecies transmission of IAV between humans and swine. To explore this, we analysed a comprehensive publicly available whole-genome dataset of human and swine IAV sequences. We conducted phylogenetic analyses and inference of ancestral host

The genus Mycobacterium exerts a strong selective force, shaping the evolution and structure of innate immune systems across various hosts and revealing overarching, conserved principles of host defense. Despite their phylogenetic distance, amoebae, nematodes, insects, wax moth larvae, and zebrafish share fundamental innate immune strategies while also exhibiting key differences in tissue organization, immune complexity, and the presence or absence of adaptive immunity. This comparative review synthesizes insights from these systems to highlight both the conserved mechanisms that mycobacteria

Bovine leukemia virus (BLV) infection in cattle results in variable proviral load (PVL), a key indicator of viral transmission and disease progression. However, the relative contributions of host and viral factors to PVL are not fully understood. The present study evaluated four potential determinants of PVL in BLV-infected cattle: two host-related factors (BoLA-DRB3 alleles and age) and two viral factors (Tax amino acid 233 (TAX-233) and 5'LTR nucleotide 175 (LTR-175)) in 1673 Japanese Black (JB) and 979 Holstein Friesian (HF) breeding cows. The contribution of each factor to PVL was quantifi

Mosquito-borne flaviviruses, such as dengue virus (DENV), Zika virus (ZIKV), West Nile virus, and yellow fever virus, pose significant public health threats globally. Extensive efforts have led to the development of promising highly active compounds against DENV targeting viral non-structural protein 4B (NS4B) protein. However, due to the cocirculation of flaviviruses and to prepare for emerging flaviviruses, there is a need for more broadly acting antivirals. Host-directed therapy where one targets a host factor required for viral replication may be active against multiple viruses that use si

The laboratory rat emerges as a useful tool for studying the interaction between the host and its microbiome. To advance principles relevant to the human microbiome, we systematically investigated and defined the multitissue microbial biogeography of healthy Fischer 344 rats across their lifespan. Microbial community profiling data were extracted and integrated with host transcriptomic data from the Sequencing Quality Control consortium. Unsupervised machine learning, correlation, taxonomic diversity and abundance analyses were performed to determine and characterize the rat microbial biogeogr
