Vector control and the detection (followed by treatment) of infected individual are the two methods currently available for the control of sleeping sickness. The basic reproduction rate of a compartmental model (Kermack and McKendrick) is used to analyze and compare the two strategies. The model shows that when there is a long first stage characteristic of an endemic situation, the detection of sick individuals is more efficient than vector control. This higher efficiency of detection decreases in a epidemic situation. In this case vector control in the form of a decrease in vector density and

Over the past three or four decades, there have been important advances in the understanding of the actions, exposure-response characteristics, and mechanisms of action of many common air pollutants. A multidisciplinary approach using epidemiology, animal toxicology, and controlled human exposure studies has contributed to the database. This review will emphasize studies of humans but will also draw on findings from the other disciplines. Air pollutants have been shown to cause responses ranging from reversible changes in respiratory symptoms and lung function, changes in airway reactivity and

Certain rare human diseases with autosomal recessive mode of inheritance are associated with a greatly increased cancer frequency which may reflect specific defects in DNA repair or replication. These disorders include xeroderma pigmentosum, ataxia-telangiectasia, Fanconi's anaemia and Bloom's syndrome. Cells from individuals with Bloom's syndrome usually grow slowly in culture and exhibit increased chromosomal breakage and rearrangement, an elevated frequency of sister chromatid exchanges, retarded rates of progression of DNA replication forks, delayed conversion of replication intermediates

Luminal, gastric, intestinal and mesenteric forms of anisakiasis are known and can be encountered where raw or undercooked marine fish or squid are eaten. Although the anisakine nematodes which cause infection in humans are usually identified after surgical removal, laboratory personnel should be aware of their similarities to other nematodes. Cases have been reported of detection of larval nematodes in the throats or mouths of patients who have vomited or coughed. When such specimens are submitted to the clinical laboratory, problems in identification can be minimized by proper fixation and c

We have developed a sensitive radioimmunoassay capable of detecting and quantitating 20 ng of hypoxanthine phosphoribosyltransferase (EC 2.4.2.8; IMP:pyrophosphate phosphoribosyltransferase) protein. For this assay, hypoxanthine phosphoribosyltransferase from human erythrocytes was iodinated with 125I under mild conditions using hydrogen peroxide and lactoperoxidase attached to Sepharose-4B. Antisera prepared against homogeneous human hypoxanthine phosphoribosyltransferase precipitates the iodinated enzyme as effectively as the unlabeled enzyme. The radioimmunoassay has been used to look for h

BACKGROUND: The role of modifiable environmental factors in Alzheimer's disease (AD) risk remains poorly understood. Built environment features such as neighbourhood walkability (NW) may influence long-term cognitive health among women.
METHODS: The New York University Women's Health Study recruited 14 273 cognitively healthy women aged 35-65 years between 1985 and 1991, with follow-up for over 30 years. We geocoded residential addresses for each participant to derive a validated four-item baseline NW measure and a two-item average annual NW index over the follow-up period. We conducted a nes

BackgroundNeighborhood disadvantage has been associated with reduced cognitive reserve, increased risk for cognitive impairment, and greater Alzheimer's disease (AD) neuropathology, with particularly pronounced effects among Black and Hispanic/Latino older adults. Blood-based AD biomarkers offer a scalable approach to population-level study of AD risk; however, whether neighborhood-level social determinants influence these biomarkers across diverse populations remains unknown.ObjectiveTo characterize associations between neighborhood disadvantage and AD blood biomarkers in a racially and ethni

Currently, 1 in 3 Canadian seniors meet the criteria for successful aging, which include low probability of disease and disability, high cognitive and physical ability and active engagement in life. The sociodemographic characteristic of living alone can identify high-risk seniors, due to its association with lower social support and interactions, thus increasing susceptibility to negative health outcomes in older age. However, limited data exists on the living arrangements of Canadian seniors. In this analysis, we present sociodemographic characteristics and measures of health and social well

INTRODUCTION: Sao Tome and Principe is an African low-and-middle-income country, where extreme poverty causes major health inequalities. No systematic research has been done on the consumption of alcohol and drugs in Sao Tome and Principe, and only overall statistics are available based on the importation of alcoholic drinks and their distribution among the population. There are also no studies on consumption of alcohol and illicit substances in children and youth and no preventive measures being undertaken. Besides that, manual databases present significant limitations, considering the lack o

It is crucial for refugee service providers to understand the family planning knowledge, attitudes, and practices of refugee women following third country resettlement. Using an ethnographic approach rooted in Reproductive Justice, we conducted six focus groups that included 66 resettled Somali and Congolese women in a western United States (US) metropolitan area. We analyzed data using modified grounded theory. Three themes emerged within the family planning domain: (a) concepts of family, (b) fertility management, and (c) unintended pregnancy. We contextualized these themes within existing f

The research for this article used available qualitative data from separate studies of South Asian-, Vietnamese-, and Hispanic-origin women victimized by intimate terrorism. Regardless of country of origin, period, or U.S. community, women used similar ways to cope. Consistent with perpetrators' misogynistic attitudes and aim of enforcing patriarchal expectations, many women responded to abuse from positions of powerlessness and fear. Instrumental help from family and friends and, depending on the group, advocacy agencies or counseling services assisted women in leaving men or stopping the abu

Little is known about the background of commercial sex workers in Africa. This study investigated how women in a trading town on the trans-Africa highway in southwest Uganda become involved in commercial sex work, which factors contribute to their economic success or lack of success, and what effect life trajectories and economic success have on negotiating power and risk behaviour. Over the course of two years detailed life histories of 34 women were collected through recording open, in-depth interviews, the collection of sexual and income and expenditure diaries, visits to the women's native

BACKGROUND: Humans have unique characteristics making us the only primate that can throw well while most other primates throw predominately underhand with poor speed and accuracy. The purpose of this study is to illuminate the uniquely human characteristics that allow us to throw so well. When treating an injury such as a labral tear or capsule tear, this study hopes the reader can gain a better understanding of the issues that lead to the tear and those that may determine the success of treatment besides the actual repair.
METHODS: In addition to a review of scientific and medical literature…

BACKGROUND: Severe infections with highly virulent community-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) are a global problem. However, the molecular events defining the evolution of CA-MRSA are still poorly understood. MRSA of sequence type (ST) 398 is known to frequently infect livestock, while ST398 isolates infecting humans are commonly methicillin-susceptible or represent MRSA originating from livestock-associated (LA)-MRSA.
METHODS: We used whole genome sequencing of newly detected CA-MRSA ST398 isolates, in comparison to geographically matched LA-MRSA and methicill

WHAT IS ALREADY KNOWN ABOUT THIS SUBJECT: • Available data from animal studies suggest that the narcotic drug propofol interacts with the endocannabinoid system. Inhibition of enzymatic degradation of anandamide could explain some of the characteristics of propofol. Direct measurements have not been reported yet in humans.
WHAT THIS STUDY ADDS: • Propofol does not change the time course of anandamide plasma concentrations during anaesthesia. Furthermore, propofol does not inhibit fatty acid amide hydrolase activity ex vivo or in vitro. Thus, specific characteristics of the narcotic drug propo

The distribution and density of cannabinoid receptor binding and messenger RNA expression in aged human brain were examined in several forebrain and basal ganglia structures. In vitro binding of [3H]CP-55,940, a synthetic cannabinoid, was examined by autoradiography in fresh frozen brain sections from normal aged humans (n = 3), patients who died with Alzheimer's disease (n = 5) and patients who died with other forms of cortical pathology (n = 5). In the structures examined--hippocampal formation, neocortex, basal ganglia and parts of the brainstem--receptor binding showed a characteristic pat

Sex chromosomes are a fundamental aspect of sex-biased biology, but the extent to which homologous X-Y gene pairs ('the gametologs') contribute to sex-biased phenotypes remains hotly debated. Although these genes tend to exhibit large sex differences in expression throughout the body (XX females can express both X members, and XY males can express one X and one Y member), there is conflicting evidence regarding the degree of functional divergence between the X and Y members. Here we develop and apply co-expression fingerprint analysis to characterize functional divergence between the X and Y m

Trypanosoma cruzi (T. cruzi) is the causative agent of Chagas disease (CD) that remains endemic in the American continent. Although vectorial transmission of T. cruzi is recognized as the main mode of infection, congenital transmission of T. cruzi to newborns by their infected mothers is well documented. In this article, we briefly discuss the current knowledge of congenital transmission of T. cruzi in humans and compare the placental architecture of humans with the experimental models that have been used to study the effects of maternal T. cruzi infection on the newborns. We point out the sim

Innate lymphoid cells (ILCs) are involved in the innate immune system because they lack specific antigen receptors and lineage markers. ILCs also display phenotypic and characteristic features of adaptive immune cells. Therefore, ILCs are functional in essential interactions between adaptive and innate immunity. ILCs are found in both lymphoid and nonlymphoid tissues and migrate to the area of inflammation during the inflammatory process. ILCs respond to pathogens by producing a variety of cytokines and are involved in the barrier defense of antigens and in many immunological processes such as
