Patients with hepatitis C virus-related decompensated cirrhosis can benefit from interferon-based antiviral therapy, but the common complication of cytopenia is a contraindication for this treatment. Systemic Lupus Erythematosus is an autoimmune disease characterized by the formation of anti-nuclear autoantibodies, particularly anti-chromatin. Erdheim-Chester disease is a rare potentially malignant systemic non-Langerhans cell histiocytosis. Although classically described in the pulmonary system and long bones, cutaneous involvement has been chronicled in 2 previous case reports. Herein, we describe a single systemic case afflicting an elderly man with synchronous multifocal cutaneous disease. The previous literature and pertinent differential diagnosis will be discussed.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: BCG is the most efficacious intravesical treatment for superficial bladder cancer. However, 30%-40% of tumors are refractory. BCG failure is an indication for cystectomy but several salvage intravesical (IVe) strategies have been proposed. Early results with reduced dose BCG in combination with IFN-a in patients are currently the most promising. We have adopted this approach and now report our preliminary results. This is the first report of this salvage therapy from Canada, the birthplace of IVe BCG therapy for superficial bladder cancer.

Classic Kaposi sarcoma (KS) is a sporadic disease that usually affects persons older than 50 years, with a distinct male predominance. Although chronic hepatitis C (CHC) is often mild and asymptomatic, it may lead to decompensated hepatic cirrhosis and death. CHC is now the single most important indication for liver transplantation in North America. CHC is also an important cause of morbidity. Recent work is reviewed and shows that the health-related quality of life (HRQOL) of patients with CHC is markedly reduced compared with that of age- and sex-matched controls.
