OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to examine the outcome of pregnancies in women suffering blunt abdominal trauma, which preceded birth.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was performed comparing patients who did and did not suffer blunt abdominal trauma preceding birth. Deliveries occurred during the years 1988-2002 in a tertiary medical center. Data regarding abdominal trauma that led to birth was available from the perinatal database of the center. Stratified analysis, using a multiple logistic regression model, was performed to control for confounders.

Creutzfeldt-Jacob disease (CJD) is a rapidly progressing dementia with neurological, psychiatric and cognitive symptoms. We focused our study on the familial CJD form among Libyan Jews (the E200K mutation), trying to identify preclinical neuropsychological signs in mutation carriers to facilitate early diagnosis of the disease. Two historical cohorts (1993-1994 and 2001) of preterm infants ventilated for respiratory distress syndrome were compared. Dexamethasone administration fell from 22% to 6%. Chronic lung disease in survivors rose slightly from 13% to 17%, and mortality fell from 21% to 15% (other causes). The obstetric data relating to 92 older primiparas (OP) treated as regular obstetric patients and data relating to 92 older multiparas (OM) are compared to a previous study of 98 OP, which led to the conclusion that OP should not be managed as high-risk patients during gestation. Infants born to women following a previous induced abortion, primarily by the D&C method, showed an excess of low birth weight. However, when women with medical illnesses were excluded, the excess was very slight. The data suggested that the greater the dilatation at D&C, the lower the birth weight. Women requiring induced abortions should have them as early as possible to minimize cervical damage and its consequences.
