This study investigates the relative contributions of the hip, knee, and ankle joints during lower limb extension exercises under varying supramaximal loads in elite volleyball players, utilizing advanced kinematic and dynamic metrics. Thirty-three elite male volleyball athletes from the Chinese National Team participated in this controlled experimental study. The study employed a repeated measures ANOVA to assess differences across loading conditions, with effect sizes calculated using partial eta-squared (η2). Significant shifts in joint contributions were observed as external loads increase

Complete arthroscopic visualization of the posterior com-partment of the knee is limited when using the traditional anterior portals. The trans-septal portal technique, created in 1997, has allowed surgeons to view the complete posterior compartment of the knee in a less-invasive way compared to open surgery. Since the description of the posterior trans-septal portal, several authors have modified the technique. However, the paucity of literature describing the trans-septal portal technique hints that widespread arthroscopic adop-tion has not yet been achieved. While still in its infancy, the

INTRODUCTION: Neurogenic heterotopic ossification (NHO) occurs as a complication of traumatic brain injury (TBI). Management of clinically significant NHO remains variable. Complications of mature NHO include limitation of mobility. The effect of the extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) on range of motion at hip and knee, and function in patients with TBI with chronic NHO was investigated.
METHODS: A series of single-case studies applying ESWT to chronic NHO at the hip or knee of 11 patients with TBI were undertaken at a rehabilitation hospital. Participants received four applications of

Osteoporosis international : a journal established as result of cooperation between the European Foundation for Osteoporosis and the National Osteoporosis Foundation of the USA2016eng
Persons with spinal cord injury (SCI) undergo immediate unloading of the skeleton and, as a result, have severe bone loss below the level of lesion associated with increased risk of long-bone fractures. The pattern of bone loss in individuals with SCI differs from other forms of secondary osteoporosis because the skeleton above the level of lesion remains unaffected, while marked bone loss occurs in the regions of neurological impairment. Striking demineralization of the trabecular epiphyses of the distal femur (supracondylar) and proximal tibia occurs, with the knee region being highly vulner

Patients with moderate to severe osteoarthritis of the knee underwent primary elective knee arthroplasty in a well-equipped hospital in Accra, Ghana. Our main outcome measures was the new modified Oxford Knee scores (preoperative and postoperative scores). Median preoperative and postoperative knee scores were 10 and 42.5, respectively, at last follow-up with a P value<0.05 showing the reliability and significance of the scores. The average duration of inpatient hospital stay was 10 days. Of the seven patients who had surgery, one patient developed a chest infection postoperatively and another

The relationship between the knee flexion-extension strength ratio and lower limb stiffness at different movement speeds involves the interaction of biomechanics, neuromuscular control, and muscle physiology. The knee flexion-extension strength ratio reflects the balance of strength between the quadriceps and hamstrings, which typically varies across different movement speeds. Optimal lower extremity stiffness plays a crucial role in enhancing movement efficiency and preventing injuries. This study aims to investigate the influence of the knee flexion-extension strength ratio, assessed under d

PURPOSE: Quadriceps tendon (QT) autograft ACL reconstruction was hypothesized to possess less anterior knee laxity, pivot shift laxity, and lower failure rates than hamstring tendon (HT) autografts.
METHODS: Terms "hamstring tendon autograft" and "ACL reconstruction" or "quadriceps tendon autograft" and "ACL reconstruction" were searched in Embase and PubMed. Inclusion criteria required that studies included patients treated for primary ACL injury with reconstruction using either a QT autograft (Group 1) or a HT autograft (Group 2) and instrumented anterior knee laxity assessment. Five revision total knee arthroplasties (TKAs) involving severe femoral bone loss were performed in 1994. Each had sufficiently severe femoral bone loss in which collateral ligament origins and posterior capsular attachments were violated. A paradoxical phenomenon was observed in each case. Unlike primary TKAs, in which larger distal femoral bone resection leads to laxity of the knee joint in extension, these cases with severe distal femoral bone loss, after initial component selection, developed the opposite situation, a flexion contracture. It was hypothesized that femoral bone loss involvin

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to evaluate the clinical utility of modern single and dual-energy computed tomography (CT) for assessing the integrity of the cruciate ligaments in patients that sustained acute trauma.
METHODS: Patients who underwent single- or dual-energy CT followed by 3 Tesla magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or knee joint arthroscopy between 01/2016 and 12/2022 were included in this retrospective, monocentric study. Three radiologists specialized in musculoskeletal imaging independently evaluated all CT images for the presence of injury to the cruciate ligaments. An MRI consen

Knee dislocation is a rare but severe injury that involves damage to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), posterior cruciate ligament (PCL), lateral or medial ligamentous structures, and other soft tissues or bony structures surrounding the knee joint. No consensus exists regarding the best treatment method. This work presents a method of 1-stage ACL and PCL reconstruction in which a contralateral quadriceps tendon-bone autograft with tibial inlay technique is used for the PCL and contralateral hamstring tendon autograft with suspension fixation is used for the ACL. After harvesting grafts, t

BACKGROUND: Few studies exist that evaluate the effect of partial medial meniscectomy in knees with intact anterior cruciate ligaments.
HYPOTHESIS: Partial meniscectomy of bucket-handle medial meniscus tears will cause joint space narrowing.
STUDY DESIGN: Case series; Level of evidence, 4.
METHODS: Between 1982 and 2001, 135 patients met the study criteria of a partial medial meniscectomy, intact ligaments, no surgery to the contralateral knee, and no chondromalacia greater than grade II. Seventy-nine patients living within 150 miles of the clinic were asked to return for physical examinati

The purpose of the study was to investigate landings in netball to ascertain whether or not an extra step on landing would significantly alter the forces on the body and to investigate the landings that were least stressful on the body. Eighteen State or Under 21 netball players participated as subjects. The subjects performed five different landing conditions at two pass heights. The five landing conditions were three legal landings consisting of a pivot, a run-on and a two foot landing. The other two landings used an extra step technique for the pivot and run-on landings. Data were collected

This study aims to demonstrate that postoperative immobilisation in a cast is unnecessary following suture repair of the patella tendon and retinacula protected by a cerlage wire. We present 11 patients mean age 42 years evaluated at a mean of 26 months (range 14-38 months). The mean Lysholm knee score at review was 97 (range 92-100). The mean Insall Salvati measurement (length patella/length tendon (LP/LT)) was 1 (range 0.95-1.1). No patients had fixed flexion deformities or demonstrated an extensor lag and the average range of motion was 0-137 degrees. The difference between the operated and

An "apparent" lengthening of the ligament implant, which causes an increase in knee laxity after the reconstruction of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) may be due to either slippage of the implant from under the fixation devices, or tunnel migration (due to bone resorption). These two mechanisms are related to the initial ligament placement, implant tensioning, and fixation modes. This cadaveric study simulates, in a controlled experimental situation, the postoperative lengthening of artificial ACL implants, and seeks to quantify the consequent increase in joint laxity. Four clinical cases are described in which patients who had undergone anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction developed ganglion-like cysts at the external aparature of the tibial channel. All patients underwent operative treatment including curettage and bone grafting with the successful resolution of the cysts. A proposal, based on the incomplete incorporation of allograft tissues within bone tunnels, is given for the pathogenisis of these cysts, accompanied by a detailed description of the relevant literature.

Lesion of the meniscus is the most frequently occurring lesion in the region of the knee joint. Opinions are still divided as to the effects of partial, subtotal or total meniscectomy in provoking and/or promoting arthrosis. In this study, 70 patients with isolated injury of the meniscus were followed up on an average 11 years after meniscectomy. The subjective and clinical findings are juxtaposed with the x-ray findings. It was found that no arthrosis or no increase of the already preoperatively existing degree of arthrosis was seen in only 21.4% of the patients. Correlations are set up betwe

BACKGROUND: Although the cause of rotational instability after revision anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) is multifactorial, the rationale of adding an extra-articular procedure is based on its ability to restrict rotational instability.
PURPOSE: To assess the effect of anterolateral ligament (ALL) reconstruction on revision ACLR.
STUDY DESIGN: Cohort study; Level of evidence, 3.
METHODS: A total of 87 patients who underwent revision ACLR between March 2011 and July 2014 with a follow-up of more than 3 years were included in this retrospective study. Patients were divided int
