Average or extraordinary? A tale of two studied samples' anxiety related recovery work after COVID-19.

INTRODUCTION: A global pandemic is a hardship and mentally distressing event for any of us, and particularly for people living at a greater risk of post-infectious health harms. Public discourse about COVID-19 largely characterizes older people as a physically and mentally vulnerable demographic. Research findings largely now to the contrary consider age an asset, a perspective in keeping with Seligman's idea that everyday people can also see the positive side of life and act accordingly when faced with events that are neither positive nor within their control. With this in mind, we explore ho

Understanding the impact of different hand drying methods on viral aerosols formation and surface contamination in indoor environments.

BACKGROUND: As COVID-19 restrictions were lifted, compliance with good hygiene practices has declined. Hand drying can help remove microbes that remain on hands following poor hand washing. We looked at the potential of new electric hand dryer models to disperse microbial droplets and aerosolized particles during hand drying, to understand if there is a potential infection risk. METHODS: We used both a food dye solution and a bacteriophage solution to visually and quantitively investigate the potential of electric hand dryers Airblade 9KJ (A9KJ), Airblade Wash & Dry (AW+D) and of paper towels

Mental health of health care workers during and after the COVID-19 pandemic - A longitudinal cohort study.

Health care workers (HCWs) faced more stressors during the COVID-19 pandemic, potentially increasing depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Insight into mental health dynamics and determinants in HCWs during the pandemic could help to maintain and improve mental health and resilience in future pandemics. In this longitudinal cohort study, HCWs received five surveys from November 2020 to March 2023 assessing self-reported symptoms of depression (PHQ-9), anxiety (GAD-7), PTSD (PCL-5), stress (PSS), burn-out (UBOS-EE), insomnia (ISI), resilience (RS) and work engagement (U

Trends and Perioperative Outcomes of Surgical Treatments for Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia in Germany: Results from the GRAND Study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Real-world data exploring the perioperative outcomes of different surgical treatments for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) are lacking. We aimed to assess the trends of BPH surgeries and compare their perioperative outcomes. METHODS: We used the GeRmAn Nationwide inpatient Data (GRAND), provided by the Research Data Center of the Federal Bureau of Statistics (2005-2022), and performed multiple patient-level analyses. KEY FINDINGS AND LIMITATIONS: Our study included 1 355 845 surgical treatments for BPH. Of these, 1 084 650 (79.9%) were transurethral resection of t

Reintervention rates after minimally invasive benign prostatic hyperplasia therapies: a systematic review including industry involvement.

PURPOSE: Minimally invasive surgical therapies (MIST) for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) provide effective alternatives to traditional surgery. At the same time, long-term reintervention rates and industry sponsorship influence remain critical in clinical decision-making. We systematically assessed surgical reintervention rates, medical therapy initiation following MISTs, and the impact of industry sponsorship on study outcomes. METHODS: We systematically reviewed prospective and retrospective studies in MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library (up to December 2024) according to PRISMA guide

Analyzing Gait Dynamics and Recovery Trajectory in Lower Extremity Fractures Using Linear Mixed Models and Gait Analysis Variables.

In a prospective study, we examined the recovery trajectory of patients with lower extremity fractures to better understand the healing process in the absence of complications. Using a chest-mounted inertial measurement unit (IMU) device for gait analysis and collecting patient-reported outcome measures, we focused on 12 key gait variables, including Mean Leg Lift Acceleration, Stance Time, and Body Orientation. We employed a linear mixed model (LMM) to analyze these variables over time, incorporating both fixed and random effects to account for individual differences and the time since injury

Rebound of Respiratory Virus Activity and Seasonality to Pre-Pandemic Patterns.

The emergence of SARS-CoV-2 and the implementation of non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) profoundly disrupted the transmission dynamics of respiratory viruses, altering their epidemiology and seasonality. However, comprehensive long-term data on these shifts and their post-pandemic implications remain limited. This study analyzed syndromic multiplex panel testing data from 83'823 respiratory specimens collected from 56,519 patients with respiratory tract infections (RTIs) at two tertiary care centers in northwestern Switzerland to systematically assess changes in respiratory virus circula

A modified strategy in robot-assisted laparoscopic partial nephrectomy for localized renal tuberculosis: the "unroofing and base excision" technique and clinical outcomes.

Renal tuberculosis is one of the main reasons for nephrectomy. Early removal of tuberculous lesions can preserve the remaining functional renal tissue and help avoid nephrectomy. Robotic-assisted surgery significantly improves the success rate of partial nephrectomy. The present study aims to introduce a modified robotic surgical approach, the 'unroofing and base excision' technique, for treating localized renal tuberculosis. Four patients with localized renal tuberculosis underwent our modified robot-assisted laparoscopic partial nephrectomy. In traditional approaches, lesions were excised at

Radiographic assessment of the correlation between maxillary sinus dimensions and greater palatine canal pathway in CBCT images (a retrospective study).

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to correlate the dimensions of the maxillary sinus in CBCT-reformatted panoramic radiographs to the greater palatine canal geometry and its neighbor structures in CBCT multiplanar images, so considering the limitations of the current study, we could use panoramic radiographs as an alert tool before performing a variety of implant surgical and dental procedures concerning the Greater Palatine Canal (GPC). METHODS: The GPC pathway and its neighbor structures were assessed in a sample of 48 CBCT Egyptian adult patients' images (24 females and 24 males) in the three or

Urban-rural health disparity among patients with chronic kidney disease: a cross-sectional community-based study from 2012 to 2019.

OBJECTIVES: The incidence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) is increasing owing to the ageing population, resulting in an increased demand for dialysis and kidney transplantation, which can be costly. Current research lacks clarity regarding the relationship between residence setting and CKD prevalence or its related risk factors. This study explored the urban-rural disparities in CKD prevalence and risk factors in Taiwan. Our findings will aid the understanding of the distribution of CKD and the design of more effective prevention programmes. DESIGN: This cross-sectional community-based study

The relationship between static and dynamic postural deformities with pain and quality of life in non-athletic women.

BACKGROUND: The assessment of the postural condition with functional tests are used with the least facilities in the shortest time, for a wide the range of movements for different parts of the body. Both static and dynamic posture measurements are predictive of injury. These two assessments provide different information regarding posture control. Also, with the advancement of this technology, the speed of posture assessment and deformity diagnosis can be increased and done with the minimum facilities. This can signal a new method for the quick diagnosis of abnormalities and ultimately prevent

The burden of infectious diseases throughout and after the COVID-19 pandemic (2020-2023) and Russo-Ukrainian war migration.

Understanding how the infectious disease burden was affected throughout the COVID-19 pandemic is pivotal to identifying potential hot spots and guiding future mitigation measures. Therefore, our study aimed to analyze the changes in the rate of new cases of Poland's most frequent infectious diseases during the entire COVID-19 pandemic and after the influx of war refugees from Ukraine. We performed a registry-based population-wide study in Poland to analyze the changes in the rate of 24 infectious disease cases from 2020 to 2023 and compared them to the prepandemic period (2016-2019). Data were

The effect of a prior eccentric lowering phase on concentric neuromechanics during multiple joint resistance exercise in older adults.

Aging involves a marked decline in physical function and especially muscle power. Thus, optimal resistance exercise (RE) to improve muscle power is required for exercise prescription. An eccentric lowering phase immediately before a concentric lift (ECC-CON) may augment concentric power production, due to various proposed mechanisms (e.g., elastic recoil, pre-activation, stretch reflex, contractile history), when compared with a concentric contraction alone (CON-Only). This study compared the effect of a prior eccentric lowering phase on older adult concentric power performance (ECC-CON vs. CO

Effects of oropharyngeal exercises on the swallowing mechanism of older adults: A systematic review.

PURPOSE: Age-related changes to the swallowing mechanism, or presbyphagia, may put older adults at a higher risk for developing diseases and dysphagia. Maintaining swallowing functions could help prevent frailty and facilitate healthy ageing. This review summarises and appraises the effects of oropharyngeal exercises on the swallowing functions of healthy older adults without dysphagia. It is hypothesised that these exercises will strengthen and improve the structures and functions of the normal ageing swallow. METHOD: This review was reported according to the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Five ele

Regional transportation and influence of atmospheric aerosols triggered by Tonga volcanic eruption.

A cataclysmic submarine volcano at Hunga Tonga-HungaHa'apai (HTHH) near Tonga, erupted violently on 15 January 2022, which injected a plume of ash cloud soaring into the upper atmosphere. In this study, we examined the regional transportation and potential influence of atmospheric aerosols triggered by HTHH volcano, based on active and passive satellite products, ground-based observations, multi-source reanalysis datasets and atmospheric radiative transfer model. The results indicated that about 0.7 Tg (1 Tg = 109 kg) sulfur dioxide (SO2) gas were emitted into stratosphere from the HTHH volcan
