Association Between Changes in Maternal Age Distribution and Hypertensive Disorders of Pregnancy in the United States, 2011-2021.

BACKGROUND: Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) are associated with increased long-term risk of both maternal and offspring cardiovascular disease. The incidence of HDP has increased concurrently with the upward shift in maternal age distribution; however, the association between changes in maternal age distribution and rates of HDP in the US is unknown. METHODS: Data from 2011 to 2021 were abstracted from the National Center for Health Statistics, which includes all live births in the United States. Births to individuals aged 15 to 44 years were included, given that 99% of all births o

Maternal and Foetal Risk Factors for Stillbirth: A Retrospective Case-Control Study at Al-Buraimi Hospital, Oman.

Background Stillbirth is a significant public health issue. The maternal and foetal risk factors often contribute to adverse outcomes. In Oman, while substantial improvements have been made in maternal and neonatal care, stillbirth remains a preventable tragedy in many cases. However, there is a gap in localised data to understand the specific risk profile for stillbirth in Oman, particularly at Al-Buraimi Hospital. Objective The main objective of the study is to identify maternal and foetal risk factors associated with stillbirths at Al-Buraimi Hospital in Al-Buraimi, Oman, in 2024 and determ

Willingness to Receive Maternal RSV Vaccination Among Pregnant Women and Those Planning Pregnancy in Southern China: A Cross-Sectional Study and Predictive Nomogram.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Maternal immunization against respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is an emerging strategy to protect infants during early life when they are most vulnerable to severe RSV infection. However, little is known about the willingness to receive maternal RSV vaccination in China, where the vaccine has not yet been officially approved for marketing. This study aimed to assess the willingness to receive maternal RSV vaccination among women who are currently pregnant and those planning pregnancy in Guangzhou, and to identify the key determinants influencing vaccination willingness.

Maternal Vitamin D Deficiency Is a Risk Factor for Infants' Epigenetic Gestational Age Acceleration at Birth in Japan: A Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The DNA methylation of neonatal cord blood can be used to accurately estimate gestational age. This is known as epigenetic gestational age. The greater the difference between epigenetic and chronological gestational age, the greater the association with an inappropriate perinatal fetal environment and development. Maternal vitamin D deficiency is common in Japan. The aim of this study was to investigate the associations between maternal serum vitamin D levels and epigenetic gestational age acceleration at birth in Japan. METHODS: The data were obtained from the hospital

Maternal psychiatric admissions and Child developmental delays: A nationwide cohort study.

PURPOSE: Children of mothers experiencing mental illness are known to exhibit elevated rates of developmental delays. However, there is little evidence-based research on the impact of perinatal psychiatric admissions. Here we aim to quantify the association between maternal mental illness that leads to admission, and the likelihood of child developmental delay. In addition, we aim to understand the association between the timing of admission, the maternal diagnosis and the developmental domain in which delays manifest. METHODS: Retrospective cohort study of data from well-child visits of 634,

Maternal Prenatal Cannabis Use and Major Structural Birth Defects.

OBJECTIVE: We evaluated associations between prenatal cannabis use and major structural birth defects of the child. METHODS: This population-based retrospective cohort study comprised singleton births (January 2011-July 2020) universally screened for substance use at entrance to prenatal care. Prenatal cannabis use was defined as self-reported use or a positive toxicology test during pregnancy. Electronic health record and birth certificate data were used to identify 38 specific major structural birth defects within 8 organ systems (i.e., central nervous, eye, ear, cardiac, orofacial/respirat

Determinants of puerperal sepsis among mothers who give birth at Jigjiga Public Hospitals, Jigjiga, Somali Regional State, Eastern Ethiopia: a facility-based unmatched case-control study.

INTRODUCTION: Puerperal sepsis is a significant public health concern in low-resource settings, including Ethiopia, where it is a major contributor to maternal mortality, accounting for 13% of maternal deaths. We investigated the determinants of puerperal sepsis among mothers who give birth at Jigjiga Public Hospitals, Somali Regional State, Eastern Ethiopia. METHODS: A facility-based unmatched case-control design was employed, with a sample size of 226 (76 cases and 151 controls). The study was conducted at two public hospitals in Jigjiga, Eastern Ethiopia, from January 2022 to December 2022.

Impact of maternal diabetes mellitus on fetal atrial strain.

While Maternal Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is well known to affect the size and function of multiple fetal organ systems, effects on developing heart chamber function remain difficult to assess. We sought to determine the independent impact of maternal DM on fetal cardiac function in middle pregnancy. We prospectively recruited mothers with all categories of DM and non-diabetic healthy controls (NDC). Echocardiograms were optimized for chamber quantification and strain analysis. Left atrial area (LAA), LA strain (LAS), right atrial strain (RAS), global longitudinal ventricular strain (GLS) and Righ

The impact of prenatal exposure to fine particulate matter and its components on maternal and neonatal thyroid function and birth weight: a prospective cohort study.

Maternal and child health has garnered considerable attention recently. The effects of prenatal exposure to PM2.5 and its components on thyroid function in both mothers and fetuses, as well as on offspring birth weight, remain unexplored. This study involved 446 mother-infant pairs from a cohort study in Ma'anshan, China, during 2021-2022. Air pollution data were obtained from the Tracking Air Pollution (TAP) project. Thyroid hormone levels (FT3, FT4, and TSH) were measured in maternal blood samples taken at various pregnancy stages and in cord blood. We employed multiple analytical methods to

Pre-pregnancy and pregnancy disorders, pre-term birth and the risk of cerebral palsy: a population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral palsy (CP) is the most common cause of childhood physical disability whose aetiology remains unclear in most cases. Maternal pre-existing and pregnancy complications are recognized risk factors of CP but the extent to which their effects are mediated by pre-term birth is unknown. METHODS: Population-based cohort study in Sweden including 2 055 378 singleton infants without congenital abnormalities, born between 1999 and 2019. Data on maternal and pregnancy characteristics and diagnoses of CP were obtained by individual record linkages of nationwide Swedish registries. Exp

Early Risk of Tobacco Smoke Exposure and Preschoolers' Hot and Cool Inhibitory Control: Promotive and Protective Roles of Maternal Positivity in Early Mother-child Interaction.

Early tobacco smoke exposure (TSE) in utero and/or during the first years after birth poses threats to the development of child executive functioning and self-regulation skills, including inhibitory control. Efforts are still needed to examine under what conditions such effects may occur and thus identify modifiable intervention targets. In addition, a distinction between cool and hot inhibitory control is also important to obtain greater nuance in such links. The cool inhibitory control refers to children's suppression of prepotent automatic responses to a distracting stimulus in solving arbi

Prenatal maternal and cord blood vitamin D concentrations and negative affectivity in infancy.

Higher maternal vitamin D concentration during pregnancy is associated with better child mental health. Negative affectivity, an early-emerging temperamental trait, indicates an increased risk of psychopathology. We investigated if maternal early/mid-pregnancy 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) and neonatal cord blood 25(OH)D concentrations are associated with Negative affectivity in infancy. We studied term-born infants from the vitamin D Intervention in Infants study (VIDI, n = 777, follow-up rate 80%, Finland), and the Generation R Study (n = 1505, follow-up rate 40%, Netherlands). We measured m

Sociodemographic Differences in Prenatal Diagnosis of Chromosomal Anomalies: A Population-Based Study.

Background: In Europe, about 76% of cases of chromosomal anomalies are prenatally diagnosed. Prenatal diagnosis allows more efficient planning of postnatal treatment and helps parents for an informed decision about the continuation of pregnancy. The main aim of this study was to evaluate whether the sociodemographic maternal characteristics affect the probability of prenatal diagnosis of chromosomal anomalies. Methods: Cases of chromosomal anomalies in the period 2005-2017 came from the population-based registry of congenital anomalies of Tuscany (Italy). Differences in the proportion of cases

Second trimester abortion as a cause of maternal death: a case report.

Each year, an estimated 529 000 maternal deaths occur worldwide. In literature, it is known that maternal mortality can occur during pregnancy, peripartum and also in postpartum period. Although very rare, maternal deaths may occur after spontaneous abortion. In present case, 37 year old G5P4 (Caesarean Section) women was admitted to Adnan Menderes University, Obstetrics and Gynecology clinic with diagnosis of missed abortion at 18 weeks' gestation. She had been hospitalized in the public maternity hospital for five days due to abortus incipience and prolapse of amnion membranes but had no con

The impact of the obstetrical risk insurance scheme in Mauritania on maternal healthcare utilization: a propensity score matching analysis.

In Mauritania, obstetrical risk insurance (ORI) has been progressively implemented at the health district level since 2002 and was available in 25% of public healthcare facilities in 2015. The ORI scheme is based on pre-payment scheme principles and focuses on increasing the quality of and access to both maternal and perinatal healthcare. Compared with many community-based health insurance schemes, the ORI scheme is original because it is not based on risk pooling. For a pre-payment of 16-18 USD, women are covered during their pregnancy for antenatal care, skilled delivery, emergency obstetric
