Parvalbumin- and calbindin D-28k-immunoreactivities (ir) were examined in the glossopharyngeal and vagal sensory ganglia (petrosal, nodose and jugular ganglia), the carotid sinus nerve and the carotid body. Parvalbumin-ir nerve cells were mostly localized in the petrosal and nodose ganglia and were rare in the jugular ganglion. Calbindin D-28k-ir nerve cells were found in moderate and large numbers in the petrosal and nodose ganglia, respectively. Only a few calbindin D-28k-ir nerve cells were observed in the jugular ganglion. The carotid sinus nerve and carotid body contained numerous calbind

The effects of intrathecal infusion of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) were examined in a 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine-induced parkinsonian model in monkeys. Nine Japanese monkeys were divided randomly into three groups, an untreated control (n = 3), a BDNF group (n = 3), and a non-BDNF group (n = 3). Animals in the BDNF group received continuous intrathecal infusion of 10 ml of cell culture medium containing 10 micrograms of BDNF protein; the non-BDNF group received intrathecal infusion of the same culture medium without BDNF. To induce parkinsonian syndromes, a total

The occurrence, distribution, and origin of immunoreactive calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) in nerves of rat, guinea pig, cat, and monkey eyes were investigated by immunocytochemistry, radioimmunoassay, and chromatography. A rich network of CGRP-immunoreactive nerve fibres was noted in the anterior uvea, which was widely distributed in both dilator and constrictor pupillae muscles and extended to the ciliary body and uveal blood vessels. Numerous CGRP-immunoreactive neuronal cells were present in the trigeminal ganglion. The extractable CGRP was 8.6 +/- 1.8 pmoles/gm of tissue in the iri

The potential of the porous scaffolds lies in its dynamic architectural features, such as porosity, pore size & shape, interconnectivity, and spatial distribution which are highly essential in tissue engineering applications. The porous structure of the scaffolds influences the biological and physicochemical activities in the tissue regeneration process. The porosity also allows better distribution of nutrients and diffusion of biological fluids thereby dispersing the seeding material uniformly. Generally, damaged tissues can be regenerated on their own but many times due to unavoidable factor

Modern approaches to discovering molecular mechanisms and validating treatments for age-related neuromusculoskeletal dysfunction typically rely on high-throughput transcriptome analysis. Previously harvested and fixed tissues offer an incredible reservoir of untapped molecular information. However, obtaining RNA from such formaldehyde-fixed neuromusculoskeletal tissues, especially fibrotic aged tissues, is technically challenging and often results in RNA degradation, chemical modification and yield reduction, prohibiting further analysis. Therefore, we developed a protocol to extract high-qual

BACKGROUND: The neural mechanisms underlying brain injury-induced gastric mucosal injury remain poorly defined, with conflicting evidence regarding vagal versus sympathetic dominance. This study aimed to characterize the temporal profile of gastric injury and autonomic nervous activity following subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), and to clarify the role of autonomic regulation in SAH-associated gastric pathogenesis.
METHODS: SAH was induced in rats by internal carotid artery puncture. Gastric mucosal injury was assessed macroscopically and histopathologically from 6 to 72 h post-SAH. Autonomic ac

BACKGROUND: The optimal extent of lymph node dissection in right hemicolectomy for colon cancer remains a topic of debate. This study aimed to refine lymph node dissection strategies by investigating the histopathological characteristics of the anterior tissue of the superior mesenteric vein (SMV) surgical trunk.
METHODS: One hundred sixty-two patients underwent surgery, with their medial resection border determined to be either to the right or left of the SMV. Pathological and perioperative variables were assessed, and the anterior tissue of the SMV was analyzed to quantify lymph nodes and n

Peripheral neuropathy is one of the most prevalent neurotoxic, dose-limiting side effects of paclitaxel, a chemotherapy agent used widely in solid cancers. The mechanism of paclitaxel-induced peripheral neuropathy (PIPN) is poorly understood, and thus there are no approved treatments currently. Notably, neuroinflammation has been described as a cardinal component in the pathogenesis of PIPN. However, animal studies of PIPN assessing neuroinflammation mediators have mostly focused on gene expression, not protein, and usually in one neuronal tissue and/or at one time point in male mice. Thus, ch

Sympathetic overactivity caused by chronic intermittent hypoxia is a hallmark of obstructive sleep apnea. A high sympathetic tone elicits increases in plasma free fatty acid and insulin. Our objective was to assess the impact of 14 nights of chronic intermittent hypoxia exposure on sympathetic activity, glucose control, lipid profile and subcutaneous fat tissue remodelling in non-obese healthy humans. In this prospective, double-blinded crossover study, 12 healthy subjects were randomized, among them only nine underwent the two phases of exposures of 14 nights chronic intermittent hypoxia vers

INTRODUCTION: The peripheral nervous system is usually involved in the majority of systemic connective tissue diseases, particularly in systemic lupus erythematosus, Sjögren's syndrome, vasculitis and systemic sclerosis. The pathogenesis of lesions in the peripheral nervous system associated with the autoimmune process is complex and it appears that two mechanisms, immunological and ischemic, are of greatest importance. Structures of the nervous system may be damaged by several autoantibodies (e.g. antineuronal, anti-nerve growth factor, anti-neurotrophins), by cytotoxic effects ofproinflammat

BACKGROUND: Although the therapeutic potential of bone marrow-derived stromal stem cells (BMSC) has been demonstrated in different experimental models of ischemic stroke, it remains unclear how stem cells (SC) induce neuroprotection following stroke. In this study, we describe a novel method for isolating BMSC that infiltrate postischemic brain tissue and use this method to identify the genes that are persistently activated or depressed in BMSC that infiltrate brain tissue following ischemic stroke.
METHODS: Ischemic strokes were induced in C57BL/6 mice by middle cerebral artery occlusion for

Nervous injuries are common in humans. One of the most advanced treatment methods is neural tissue engineering. This research aims to utilize nerve-like cells (NLCs) derived from endometrial mesenchymal stem cells (EnMSCs) on a polyacrylonitrile/chitosan (PAN/CS) scaffold, along with berberine, for the reconstruction of a rat sciatic nerve injury model. In this experimental study, EnMSCs were obtained through enzymatic digestion and identified using flow cytometry and their differentiation into adipocyte and osteoblast. PAN nanofiber scaffolds were produced through electrospinning, and EnMSCs

Thyroid cancer often invades the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN), causing vocal cord paralysis. In such patients, the invaded portion of the RLN usually needs to be resected through curative surgery. We attempt to preserve the nerve by performing sharp dissection in such cases. During nerve dissection, an intraoperative nerve monitoring system helps identify the course of the RLN in the fibrous tissue around the tumor or even within the tumor, and also helps evaluate the nerve integrity. Because of extensive dissection, the preserved RLN may become much thinner than its original thickness. We

PURPOSE: Ischemic disorders of the optic nerve head constitute an important cause of visual loss. The optic nerve head is supplied by two main sources of blood flow: the superficial layers by the central retinal artery and the deeper layers by the posterior ciliary arteries. This study was conducted in rhesus monkey eyes to obtain a better understanding of which part of the optic nerve head circulation is measured by laser Doppler flowmetry.
METHODS: By means of a fundus camera-based laser Doppler flowmetry technique to measure blood flow in the optic nerve head tissue, laser Doppler flowmetr

1. While much is now known about the Na-K-ATPase and the posttetanic hyperpolarization of nervous tissue, they have yet to be studied together in the same preparation. 2. The post-tetanic hyperpolarization was studied in desheathed garfish olfactory nerve. The rate constant of decay of the post-tetanic hyperpolarization was determined by monitoring difference potentials after stimulation at 1/sec for 2-3 min. 3. In membrane fractions prepared from these nerves, the ouabain-sensitive ATPase activity (Na-K-ATPase) was determined by spectrophotometric measurements. 4. Both the post-tetanic hyperp

The axillary tail, also known as spencer's tail or axillary process, is a continuation of tissue from the upper lateral quadrant of the breast that travels into the axilla through a foramen of Langer in the deep fascia. Axillary inflammation or lump is a typical clinical symptom that necessitates imaging evaluation. Since the axilla consists of lymph nodes as well as nonlymphatic tissue such as accessory breast tissue, skin, fat, muscles, nerves, and blood vessels, it has a wide variety of differential diagnoses. The radiologists should be well acquainted with axillary anatomy and imaging aspe

INTRODUCTION: The direct anterior approach (DAA) for primary and revision total hip arthroplasty (THA) has been growing in popularity due to reported less soft tissue disruption, less post-operative pain, earlier post-operative functional recovery, and lower dislocation rate. One potential complication of this approach is damage to the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve (LFCN). The incidence of damage to the LFCN in the literature ranges from 14.8% to 81%. Documented treatments consist mainly of conservative measures; however, here, we describe a case where operative intervention was pursued due

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is the most common peripheral nerve entrapment disorder, with a lifetime prevalence estimated at approximately 10%. This narrative review explores the historical evolution, current management strategies, and emerging trends in CTS diagnosis and treatment. Early recognition of CTS led to the development of conservative interventions, including splinting, corticosteroid injections, and physical therapy, aimed at alleviating median nerve compression and associated symptoms. The advent of open carpal tunnel release established surgery as the definitive treatment for mo
