An open-source system for recording the auditory brainstem response (ABR) and an example application in mice with hearing loss.

The auditory brainstem response (ABR) is a measure of the neurophysiological response to sound, widely used in clinical and research settings. In this manuscript, we describe an open-source and low-cost system suitable for measuring the ABR in mice. (This system is not evaluated or approved for clinical use in humans.) The heart of the system is the commercially available Texas Instruments ADS1299 chip, which is designed for multi-channel differential recording of biosignals. We designed auxiliary hardware and software to record and visualize the ABR. To demonstrate that this system is capable

Task-related brain activation associated with violence in patients with schizophrenia: A meta-analysis.

This study investigates specific changes in brain function during cognitive and emotional tasks in patients with schizophrenia and a history of violence (VSCZ) compared with non-violent patients with schizophrenia and healthy controls. A comprehensive literature search was conducted at the Web of Science, Medline, and PubMed. Ten studies met the inclusion criteria. In which, eight studies compared brain activation between patients with VSCZ and non-violent patients with schizophrenia, and the former exhibited increased activation at the middle occipital gyrus and rectus compared with the latte

From Multisensory Integration to Multisensory Decision-Making.

Organisms live in a dynamic environment in which sensory information from multiple sources is ever changing. A conceptually complex task for the organisms is to accumulate evidence across sensory modalities and over time, a process known as multisensory decision-making. This is a new concept, in terms of that previous researches have been largely conducted in parallel disciplines. That is, much efforts have been put either in sensory integration across modalities using activity summed over a duration of time, or in decision-making with only one sensory modality that evolves over time. Recently

Psychedelics for acquired brain injury: a review of molecular mechanisms and therapeutic potential.

Acquired brain injury (ABI), such as traumatic brain injury and stroke, is a leading cause of disability worldwide, resulting in debilitating acute and chronic symptoms, as well as an increased risk of developing neurological and neurodegenerative disorders. These symptoms can stem from various neurophysiological insults, including neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, imbalances in neurotransmission, and impaired neuroplasticity. Despite advancements in medical technology and treatment interventions, managing ABI remains a significant challenge. Emerging evidence suggests that psychedelics may

Learning and memory processes in behavioural addiction: A systematic review.

Similar to addictive substances, addictive behaviours such as gambling and gaming are associated with maladaptive modulation of key brain areas and functional networks implicated in learning and memory. Therefore, this review sought to understand how different learning and memory processes relate to behavioural addictions and to unravel their underlying neural mechanisms. Adhering to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, we systematically searched four databases - PsycINFO, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science using the agreed-upon search str

Parallel or sequential? Decoding conceptual and phonological/phonetic information from MEG signals during language production.

Speaking requires the temporally coordinated planning of core linguistic information, from conceptual meaning to articulation. Recent neurophysiological results suggested that these operations involve a cascade of neural events with subsequent onset times, whilst competing evidence suggests early parallel neural activation. To test these hypotheses, we examined the sources of neuromagnetic activity recorded from 34 participants overtly naming 134 images from 4 object categories (animals, tools, foods and clothes). Within each category, word length and phonological neighbourhood density were co

Childhood trauma predicts blunted error monitoring in adulthood: An event-related potential study.

Abuse and neglect have detrimental consequences on emotional and cognitive functioning during childhood and adolescence, including error monitoring, which is a critical aspect of cognition that has been implicated in certain internalizing and externalizing psychopathologies. It is unclear, however, whether (a) childhood trauma has effects on error monitoring and, furthermore whether, (b) error monitoring mediates the relation between childhood trauma and psychopathology in adulthood. To this end, in a large sample of young adults (ages 18-30) who were oversampled for psychopathology (N = 390),

Gastrointestinal Symptoms and Dopamine Transporter Asymmetry in Early Parkinson's Disease.

BACKGROUND: The neurophysiological correlates of gastrointestinal symptoms (GISs) in Parkinson's disease (PD) are not well understood. It has been proposed that in patients with a gastrointestinal origin of PD dopaminergic neurodegeneration would be more symmetric. OBJECTIVES: The aim is to assess the associations between GISs and asymmetry of nigrostriatal dopaminergic neurodegeneration in PD. METHODS: Ninety PD patients were assessed using motor and GIS scales and 123 I-FP-CIT SPECT. We calculated the asymmetry index and the predominant side of motor symptoms and dopamine transporter (DAT)

Event-Related Brain Potential Correlates of Event-Based Prospective Memory in Children With Learning Disability.

Prospective memory (PM) has been reported to be impaired in children with learning disabilities (LD), but few studies have examined the underlying neural mechanism of this impairment. To address this issue, the present study applied ERP technique to explore the difference of event-based prospective memory (EBPM) in 21 children with LD and 20 non-LD children with double task paradigm. Results from behavioral data showed that LD children exhibited lower accuracy than non-LD children. The ERP results showed that the two groups displayed significant difference in the ERP components, with longer N3

Visuomotor integration in early Alzheimer's disease: A TMS study.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Cortical visuomotor integration is altered in Alzheimer's disease (AD), even at an early stage of the disease. The aim of this study was to assess the connections between the primary visual (V1) and motor (M1) areas in patients with early AD using a paired-pulse, twin-coil transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) technique. METHODS: Visuomotor connections (VMCs) were assessed in 13 subjects with probable AD and 16 healthy control subjects. A conditioning stimulus over the V1 phosphene hotspot was followed at interstimulus intervals (ISIs) of 18 and 40 ms by a test stimu

Tension-type headache and low back pain reconsidered.

The natural history and clinical course of tension-type headache and non-specific low back pain are reconsidered. By closer examination, these two conditions appear to share several specific clinical features. Both are muscular pain conditions along the spine, they have a preponderance in women, they may occur spontaneously or follow a trivial traumatic incident, and they both have a high risk of chronicity. The affected muscles are tender with tender points. EMG indicates diffuse hyperactivity and abnormal activation pattern, and motor control of the affected muscles and adjacent muscle group

The pathophysiology of Parkinson's disease tremor.

Tremor is one of the primary motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease (PD), and it is characterized by a highly phenomenological heterogeneity. Clinical and experimental observations suggest that tremor in PD cannot be interpreted merely as an expression of dopaminergic denervation of the basal ganglia. Accordingly, other neurotransmitter systems and brain areas are involved. We here review neurochemical, neurophysiological, and neuroimaging data as the basis of the presence of a dysfunctional network underlying tremor in PD. We will discuss the role of altered oscillations and synchronization in

Miller-Fisher syndrome associated with SARS-CoV-2: a case report.

SARS-CoV-2 infections are increasingly associated with neurological complications, including immune-mediated neuropathies. Miller-Fisher syndrome is a rare variant of Guillain-Barré syndrome characterised by the triad of ataxia, ophthalmoplegia and areflexia. Here we present a case of Miller-Fisher syndrome following COVID-19 infection. The clinical presentation was a short history of a rapidly-progressive peripheral sensorimotor neuropathy with bulbar dysfunction and facial weakness following mild COVID infection. Examination revealed global areflexia and a broad-based ataxic gait. CSF analys

Expanding the spectrum of SOX1-antibodies in neuropathy: the coexistence of anti-SOX1 and Guillain-Barré syndrome-a case report.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Antibodies against SOX1 (or anti-glial nuclear antibody, AGNA) are partially characterized onconeural antibodies, firstly described in association with small cell lung cancer (SCLC). Lambert-Eaton myasthenic syndrome is the most frequent paraneoplastic syndrome (PNS) found in patients with anti-SOX1-antibody positivity. Other associations are chronic axonal polyneuropathy, paraneoplastic limbic encephalitis, and paraneoplastic cerebellar degeneration. METHODS: We describe a case of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) with classical demyelinating phenotype associated with a posi

Sense and Sensibility: A Review of the Behavioral Neuroscience of Tinnitus Sound Therapy and a New Typology.

Tinnitus Sound Therapy is not a single strategy. It consists of many different sound types, targeting many different mechanisms. Therapies that use sound to cover, reduce attention to, or facilitate habituation of tinnitus are among the most common tinnitus treatment paradigms. Recent history has seen a proliferation of sound therapies, but they have each been criticized for having limited empirical support. In this review, Sound Therapy's modern history will be described, and a typology will be introduced and discussed in light of current behavioral neuroscience research. It will be argued th

Resting state functional connectivity responses post-mild traumatic brain injury: a systematic review.

Mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBI) are associated with functional network connectivity alterations throughout recovery. Yet, little is known about the adaptive or maladaptive nature of post-mTBI connectivity and which networks are predisposed to altered function and adaptation. The objective of this review was to determine functional connectivity changes post-mTBI and to determine the adaptive or maladaptive nature of connectivity through direct comparisons of connectivity and behavioral data. Literature was systematically searched and appraised for methodological quality. A total of 16 arti
