In this case report, a nine-week-old girl was referred to the ear-, nose- and throat department because of decreased oral intake, swelling of the left tonsil and the left side of the neck. An MRI was performed due to the atypical presentation, which revealed a massive peritonsillar abscess communicating with the swelling on the neck. Treatment consisted of an incision, drainage and intravenous antibiotics. Re-dilation and rinsing were performed on the first post-operative day before extubation. Finally, the patient was discharged after two days with oral antibiotics.

Type 1 leprosy reactions (T1LRs) occur mainly in patients with borderline leprosy and an unstable immune status. The main symptoms of T1LRs include aggravated skin lesions and nerve damage. Nerve damage involving the glossopharyngeal and vagus nerves causes dysfunction of the nose, pharynx, larynx, and even the esophagus, which are innervated by these nerves. Here, we report a case of upper thoracic esophageal paralysis caused by vagus nerve involvement in a patient with T1LRs. Although infrequent, this serious emergency merits attention.

Glial heterotopia is a rare congenital mass that often presents as a unilateral mass lesion in or around the nose. Complete surgical excision is the treatment of choice. However, before any surgical intervention for suspected glial heterotopia, distinction should be made both clinically and radiologically from the pathologically related encephalocele to prevent the risk of cerebrospinal fluid leak and meningitis. Here, we report a rare case of bilateral orbital glial heterotopia in a 2-year-old child with review of the literature.
