Developmental challenges in infants who are HIV-exposed uninfected.

INTRODUCTION: The global HIV epidemic continues to affect millions of people and significantly affects children. Approximately 16 million children born to HIV-positive women, categorized as HIV-exposed uninfected (HEU), face unique developmental hurdles despite not contracting the virus. These children are more likely to experience developmental issues due to factors such as exposure to maternal HIV, antiretroviral therapy (ART), nutritional shortages, and adverse social conditions. Research indicates that children who are HIV-exposed but uninfected (HEU) may have subpar neurodevelopmental out

Body height, body weight, BMI, and nutritional status among male adolescents in Montenegro: a nationwide archival study from 1979 to 1987.

INTRODUCTION: Monitoring anthropometric characteristics such as body height and body weight, as well as body mass index (BMI) is central to understanding biological develop¬ment and population health. Montenegro is known for exceptionally tall stature, which is also reflected in other mentioned variables, yet historical national-level data on adolescent growth during the second half of the 20th century have been limited. The aim of this study was to examine secular trends in body height, body weight, BMI, and nutritional status among male adolescents in Montenegro using nationwide archival dat

Severe Household Food Insecurity and Malnutrition Among School-Going Adolescents in South Punjab, Pakistan: Implications for Sustainable Development Goal 2 (A Cross-Sectional Study).

INTRODUCTION: Food insecurity and malnutrition remain major public health concerns among adolescents in low- and middle-income countries. Adolescence is a critical period for growth and development, yet school-going adolescents remain underrepresented in nutrition research and policy in Pakistan. This study aimed to assess household food insecurity, nutritional status, and their association among school-going adolescents in peri-urban South Punjab. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 384 school-going adolescents aged 15-18 years from public and private schools in peri-urban Lodhran d

Novel supplemental guidelines for zinc, copper, and manganese in bovines, integrating net requirements, native dietary occurrence, and the boundaries of homeostatic regulation.

A long-standing objective in ruminant nutrition is to ensure an adequate supply of the key trace metals Zn, Cu, and Mn, while accounting for bioavailability and nutritional interactions, and not exceeding tolerance. In practice, however, dietary supplementation often far exceeds reference nutritional guidelines, largely as a precaution against the multiple uncertainties of trace mineral supply. Current reference recommendations are determined using fixed and highly conservative uptake coefficients, an approach that overlooks both the opportunities and the limitations of absorptive regulation,

Systematic Review of Nutritional Guidelines for the Management of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus: A Global Comparison.

Background: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) affects 7-9% of pregnancies worldwide and is associated with adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes. Nutritional therapy is a key component of GDM management. However, inconsistencies exist across international and national guidelines regarding macronutrient distribution, glycemic targets, and micronutrient supplementation. This systematic review aims to compare updated nutritional recommendations for GDM across major health organizations and identify areas of consensus, divergence, and evidence gaps. Methods: This systematic review was conducted

Intraduodenal fecal microbiota transplantation ameliorates gut atrophy and cholestasis in a novel parenteral nutrition piglet model.

Total parenteral nutrition (TPN) provides lifesaving nutritional support intravenously; however, it is associated with significant side effects. Given gut microbial alterations noted with TPN, we hypothesized that transferring fecal microbiota from healthy controls would restore gut-systemic signaling in TPN and mitigate injury. Using our novel ambulatory model (US Patent: US 63/136,165), 31 piglets were randomly allocated to enteral nutrition (EN), TPN only, TPN + antibiotics (TPN-A), or TPN + intraduodenal fecal microbiota transplant (TPN + FMT) for 14 days. Gut, liver, and serum were assess…

ESPEN guidelines on nutrition in cancer patients.

Cancers are among the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide, and the number of new cases is expected to rise significantly over the next decades. At the same time, all types of cancer treatment, such as surgery, radiation therapy, and pharmacological therapies are improving in sophistication, precision and in the power to target specific characteristics of individual cancers. Thus, while many cancers may still not be cured they may be converted to chronic diseases. All of these treatments, however, are impeded or precluded by the frequent development of malnutrition and metabolic

Parasite Management in High-risk Beef Stocker Calves.

Gastrointestinal nematodes remain a major challenge in high-risk stocker cattle, impacting performance, health, and animal welfare. Routine blanket deworming combined with intensive grazing systems has accelerated anthelmintic resistance, threatening long-term parasite control. Sustainable management requires integrating diagnostics, refugia-based strategies, concomitant anthelmintic therapy, and improved nutrition and stress management. Adoption is limited by knowledge gaps and behavioral barriers. Developing cattle health and production data infrastructure, improving stakeholder collaboratio

Incidence and characteristics of candidemia in hospitalised patients with advanced HIV in the Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) hospital in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Candidemia is an underrecognised complication among patients with advanced HIV disease (AHD), particularly in low‑resource settings. We conducted a retrospective study at an MSF-supported hospital in Kinshasa (2022-2025) to describe the incidence, characteristics, and outcomes of candidemia. Among 3974 AHD admissions, 46 candidemia cases (1.2%) were identified, more than 80% of which were healthcare‑associated. Mortality was high (76.1%) and many deaths occurred before microbiological confirmation. Classical risk factors, such as indwelling catheters and parenteral nutrition, were uncommon, su

The geroprotective potential of chalcones.

Aging is the most important risk factor for multiple pathologies including cardiovascular, neoplastic, metabolic and neurodegenerative diseases. Potential geroprotective strategies involve lifestyle-related, nutritional and pharmacological interventions. Recently, chalcones, a subgroup of secondary plant metabolites, have gained attention. 4,4'-dimethoxychalcone was the first chalcone to be shown to mediate geroprotection and lifespan extension across different species. Several other chalcones also exert anti-aging effects at the cellular and organismal levels. Defined mechanistic routes that

Nutritional and hydration interventions for people with dysphagia.

Dysphagia (swallowing difficulties) is particularly common in older people and is associated with various health conditions. Dysphagia affects an individual's ability to eat and drink, and can have a significant effect on their clinical outcomes and quality of life. This article explores ways in which nurses can support people with dysphagia to minimise the effects of the condition and enhance their quality of life. The authors examine the role of commonly used strategies such as dietary texture modification and thickened fluids that aim to optimise nutrition and hydration. However, some of th

Energy balance in advanced breast cancer: extending beyond the curative setting.

Outcomes in early-stage breast cancer, including quality of life, body composition, physical functioning, physiologic biomarkers, cancer recurrence, and mortality, are associated with body weight, diet, and physical activity. These same endpoints may also be relevant in patients with metastatic breast cancer; however, few studies have evaluated the role of energy balance in this setting. Future work is needed to determine how body weight, nutrition, and exercise or other physical activity might affect the disease course of metastatic breast cancer, and whether energy balance may be a component

Smell and taste in the preterm infant.

Olfaction and gustation are critical for the enjoyment of food but also have important metabolic roles, initiating the cephalic phase response that sets in train secretion of hormones important for metabolism and digestion before any food is actually ingested. Smell and taste receptors are functional in the fetus and there is evidence for antenatal learning of odours. Despite enteral nutrition and metabolism being major issues in the care of very preterm infants, often little consideration is given to the potential role of smell and taste in supporting these processes, or in the role they may

Preoperative Stabilization of Infants With Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome Before Stage I Palliation.

Hypoplastic left heart syndrome is a severe form of congenital heart disease that results in single-ventricle physiology. Although surgical palliation in infants with this syndrome is widely agreed on in practice, variation occurs in both surgical and medical management. Perinatal factors that affect preoperative management include the subtype of the syndrome and the patient's birth weight, gestational age, and genetic abnormalities. The general aspects of perioperative stabilization and management are monitoring, use of vasoactive infusions, ventilatory support, and nutrition. Management stra

Clinical management of post-pyloric enteral feeding in children.

Post-pyloric feeding (PF) allows the administration of enteral nutrition beyond the pylorus, either into the duodenum or, ideally, into the jejunum. The main indications of PF are: upper gastrointestinal tract obstructions, pancreatic rest (e.g., acute pancreatitis), gastric dysmotility (e.g., critically ill patients and chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction) or severe gastroesophageal reflux with risk of aspiration (e.g., neurological disability). Physiological and clinical evidence derives from adults, but can also be pertinent to children. This review will discuss the practical management a

Bilateral Blindness Following Chemoradiation for Locally Advanced Oropharyngeal Carcinoma.

Wernicke's encephalopathy is a life-threatening neurologic complication of thiamine deficiency. Though the presentation of symptoms can vary widely, the classical triad is founded on ophthalmoplegia, alteration of mental status, and gait disturbance. We describe a case of Wernicke's encephalopathy in an oncology patient shortly after concurrent 5-fluorouracil, carboplatin, and radiotherapy for locally advanced oropharyngeal cancer, presenting as complete bilateral blindness, ataxia, nystagmus, and confusion. Thiamine was given based on clinical suspicion and rapid improvement of clinical findi

[Empowerment approach to the management of comorbid diabetes and cancer].

Diabetes mellitus is a frequent comorbidity of cancer patients. Recent data show that diabetes may negatively impact both cancer risks and outcomes of treatment. It is important to identify patients at risk for complications that arise from cancer treatment in the setting of pre-existing diabetes. Additionally, underlying hyperglycemia or hidden diabetes in a patient undergoing cancer treatment such as chemotherapy including steroid administration and total parenteral nutrition should be identified and managed. Strategies for monitoring and managing hyperglycemia during the course of cancer tr
