The Effect of Parents and Peers on the Neural Correlates of Risk Taking and Antisocial Behavior During Adolescence.

Social and neurobiological factors independently associate with the development of antisocial behavior during adolescence, yet it is unclear how these factors contribute to antisocial behavior in girls. Using a longitudinal sample of 45 adolescent girls (age in years at scan: M = 15.38, SD = 0.33), this study examined the contributions of parent-adolescent relationship quality and deviant peer affiliation from 6th-8th grades along with the neural correlates of risk taking in 9th grade to later antisocial behavior. High parent-adolescent closeness in early adolescence predicted lower antisocial

Perceived parental depression and PTSD in adolescents: mediating roles of attachment insecurity and coping style.

Background: Earthquakes can cause negative psychological states in adolescents and their parents, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression. Previous cross-sectional studies have shown that adolescents who perceive parental depression after an earthquake are more likely to experience PTSD. However, the mechanism underlying this process remains unclear and previous studies have not examined the association between these factors. Objective: The current study explored the mediating roles of attachment insecurity and coping style in the association between perceived parental depr

Markers of platelet activation foR identification of late onset sEpsis in infaNTs: PARENT study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Newborns are at high risk of sepsis. At present there is no definitive "rule in" blood test for sepsis at the point of clinical concern. A positive blood culture remains the gold standard test for neonatal sepsis, however laboratory markers that correlate prospectively with culture positive sepsis could aid clinicians in making decisions regarding administration of empiric antibiotic therapies. METHODS: This multi-site, prospective observational study will take place in two neonatal intensive care units (National Maternity Hospital and Rotunda Hospital, Dublin). Neonates born at l

Youth and Parent Perceptions of Youth Decision-Making Roles Regarding Evaluation for Short Stature.

Youth decision-making involvement (DMI) in medical treatment associates with greater adherence and feelings of self-efficacy. However, little is known about youth DMI regarding medical evaluation and diagnostic procedures. Using thematic analysis of semi-structured interviews, we explored parent (n=24) and youth (n=24) perceptions of youth roles in the decision to undergo evaluation for short stature. Five themes emerged about evaluation decisions including: parents/providers were gatekeepers, some parents sought youth agreement, conversations focused on logistics, some parents gave limited in

Efficacy of coping mechanisms used during COVID-19 as reported by parents of children with autism.

The COVID-19 pandemic's alterations to daily life have been especially challenging for families with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), worsening the core features of ASD and overall mental health. With the increased need for effective coping, the current retrospective study used data from a survey regarding parent reports of how often their child with ASD used certain coping strategies (frequency), as well as the extent to which they felt their child benefitted from their use (efficacy) in mitigating stress during the pandemic. This retrospective study Repeated measures ANOVAs were conducted to

Examining the effect of parent participation in an adult weight management program on changes in children's weight.

Children of parents participating in weight management programs (WMPs) are more likely to adopt their parents' weight control practices. Little is known about the weight outcomes of children who have a parent participating in a WMP. This study aimed to assess this relationship. Children 2-17 years of age with a parent who participated in a WMP were included in the study. Multilevel linear mixed-effects regression models were used, stratified by child weight status at the time of parental WMP participation (healthy weight, overweight/obesity) to determine change in children's BMIz from before t

Parent factors associated with BMI, diet, and physical activity of adolescents with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) experience overweight and obesity (OW/OB) up to 1.8 times the rate of their typically developing peers. Parents may influence adolescent weight management behaviors in this population, but the association between parent factors and adolescent weight management behaviors is unclear. OBJECTIVE: To examine the associations between parent BMI and sociodemographic characteristics with adolescents' BMI, diet quality, daily energy intake, moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA), and sedentary behavior. METHODS: Thi

Applying behaviour change theory to parent-led language interventions for children in the early years.

BACKGROUND: The aim of many interventions used by speech and language therapists (SLTs) is to change behaviours related to communication and interaction. Parent-led language interventions for children in the early years (0-5 years) rely on SLTs supporting parents to change their behaviour in child-focused interactions to effect a change in the child's communication. Therapeutic techniques used by SLTs in parent-led language interventions are largely underspecified, impacting on intervention reporting, replication, trialling and development. The Behaviour Change Technique Taxonomy Version 1 (BC

A Prospective Study of Parental Experience with Thickening Feeds for Children with Oropharyngeal Dysphagia and Gastroesophageal Reflux.

Thickening is efficacious and commonly recommended for oropharyngeal dysphagia and gastroesophageal reflux. Little is known about parental experience with this practice. Results of this cross-sectional questionnaire study suggest attitudes are positive, but parents frequently adjust recipes/nipple sizes, which might increase aspiration risk. Clinical follow-up is essential to ensure safe feeding.

Effects of parental exposure to amitriptyline on the survival, development, behavior, and gene expression in zebrafish offspring.

In mammals, parental exposure to amitriptyline (AMI) has been proven to contribute to congenital disabilities in their offspring. However, no studies have paid attention to the adverse effects of parental exposure to amitriptyline on fish offspring. In this study, we exposed adult zebrafish (F0) to AMI (0.8 μg/L) for 21 days. Subsequently, these zebrafish (F0) were allowed to mate, and their offspring (F1) were collected to culture in clean water for 5 days. The mortality rate, average hatching time, and heart rate at 48 h post-fertilization (hpf) of F1 were investigated. Our results showed th
