Psychological aspects in neuromuscular patients: case series.

The management of patients with neuromuscular diseases requires a multidisciplinary approach that integrates medical care with targeted psychological support. Respiratory difficulties, often treated with non-invasive ventilation (NIV) are accompanied by mood disorders such as anxiety and depression, which can compromise treatment adherence and quality of life. In our Unit, we performed psychological assessment from the first visit, using the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) scale to evaluate the patients, and initiate where necessary, psychological support, also via telemedicine. We prese

Diazinon-induced Cognitive Impairment: Alternations in Amyloid Precursor Proteins, and TNF-α Expression in the Hippocampus of Adult Rats.

BACKGROUND: Organophosphate pesticides such as diazinon (DZN) are involved in developing psychological symptoms and memory deficits, but their effects on the amyloid precursor proteins (APP) gene expression remain unclear. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Following low-level oral exposure to the DZN (2 mg/kg), we used novel object recognition, open field, and elevated plus-mazes (EPM) to assess memory and anxiety-like behaviors in rats. We also evaluated alteration in the levels of tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α), amyloid precursor protein (APP), APP-like protein-2 (APLP2), and amyloid-β (Aβ) via western

Effects of Obstructive Sleep Apnea on Cognition: An Analysis of Electroencephalography Microstates and Alpha Peak Frequency.

BACKGROUND: Respiration-related sleep disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) are risk factors for mild cognitive impairment and age-related neurocognitive deficits. Nearly 60% of patients with OSA suffer from a variety of impaired cognitive functions, including attention, working memory, and episodic memory, and are susceptible to mood disorders such as depression and anxiety. However, it remains largely unexplored regarding the features of the electroencephalography (EEG) microstates of these patients and the potential association between the EEG microstates and the cognitive impairm

Sex differences in the effects of 10 Hz and 40 Hz transcranial alternating current stimulation on spatial cognition in mice.

BACKGROUND: Sex differences are crucial to understanding neuropsychiatric disorders, yet they are often overlooked in the development of therapies. Transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) shows promise for cognitive enhancement, but its sex-specific effects are largely unknown. METHODS: In this study, the effects of 10 Hz and 40 Hz tACS on spatial cognition were examined in male and female mice using three tests: the Y-maze to evaluate spatial recognition memory, the Barnes maze to evaluate spatial learning and memory related to punishment, and the reversal Barnes maze to evaluate

Psychiatric and cognitive function in patients with serotonin producing neuroendocrine tumors.

Cognitive and psychiatric problems are common in cancer patients, but literature on patients with neuroendocrine tumors (NET) is scarce. In a subset of these patients, the tumor produces serotonin, causing physical symptoms known as carcinoid syndrome. This peripheral overproduction of serotonin may cause central depletion of its precursor tryptophan, potentially resulting in cognitive and psychiatric problems. Therefore, we investigated cognitive and psychiatric function in patients with a serotonin overproduction and the association with this serotonin overproduction. Eighty-one patients wit

Correlation of intratumoral mast cell quantity with psychosocial distress in patients with pancreatic cancer: the PancStress study.

Mast cells are commonly found in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), yet their role in the disease remains uncertain. Although mast cells have been associated with depression in several diseases, their connection to PDAC in this context remains unclear. This study explored the correlation between mast cells and psychosocial stress in patients with PDAC. Prior to surgery, 40 patients with PDAC (n = 29 primary resected, n = 11 neoadjuvant treated) completed four questionnaires assessing stress and quality of life. Immunostaining was performed on the resected tumor tissue. Spearman analysis
