Development and Validation of a Machine Learning Model to Predict Oral Anticoagulant Use in Stroke From Prothrombin Time-International Normalized Ratio and Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time.

BACKGROUND: Timely recognition of oral anticoagulant use is critical in acute stroke but is often hampered by impaired consciousness and unavailable medication history. We investigated whether routinely available coagulation tests, prothrombin time-international normalized ratio and activated partial thromboplastin time, paired with machine learning can identify anticoagulant exposure at presentation. METHODS: We performed a multicenter diagnostic modeling study using the Japan Stroke Data Bank. Adults with ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke admitted in 2016 to 2021 comprised the derivation cohor

A novel predictive model for evaluating thrombus regression in postpartum venous thromboembolism patients.

INTRODUCTION: Antithrombotic evaluation of postpartum venous thromboembolism (VTE) after anticoagulant therapy is challenging because of the lack of high-quality clinical evidence. AIM: To identify and validate a machine learning model to predict thrombus regression in postpartum VTE patients. METHOD: This study constructed three cohorts of postpartum VTE patients receiving low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH): retrospective (n = 200), prospective (n = 50), and external (n = 29) cohorts. The main endpoint was imaging-based thrombus regression. Based on clinical guidelines and literature, we s

A community machine learning challenge to predict the effects of gene perturbations on T cell differentiation for cancer immunotherapy.

Perturbations of genes with functional importance in T cells could be used to change the distribution of CD8 T cell states to enhance anti-tumor functions for cancer immunotherapies. We launched a world-wide computational challenge to predict the effects of gene perturbations and to devise objective functions for prioritizing gene perturbations that lead to desired T-cell state distributions. We supported the challenge by generating a single-cell Perturb-seq dataset profiling the effect of knocking out 73 individual expert-defined genes in T cells transferred into a mouse melanoma model. We co

Handwriting Evaluation Using Deep Learning with SensoGrip.

Handwriting learning disabilities, such as dysgraphia, have a serious negative impact on children's academic results, daily life and overall well-being. Early detection of dysgraphia facilitates an early start of targeted intervention. Several studies have investigated dysgraphia detection using machine learning algorithms with a digital tablet. However, these studies deployed classical machine learning algorithms with manual feature extraction and selection as well as binary classification: either dysgraphia or no dysgraphia. In this work, we investigated the fine grading of handwriting capab

An Image Based Object Recognition System for Wound Detection and Classification of Diabetic Foot and Venous Leg Ulcers.

Venous leg ulcers and diabetic foot ulcers are the most common chronic wounds. Their prevalence has been increasing significantly over the last years, consuming scarce care resources. This study aimed to explore the performance of detection and classification algorithms for these types of wounds in images. To this end, algorithms of the YoloV5 family of pre-trained models were applied to 885 images containing at least one of the two wound types. The YoloV5m6 model provided the highest precision (0.942) and a high recall value (0.837). Its mAP_0.5:0.95 was 0.642. While the latter value is compa

Applications of machine learning techniques to predict filariasis using socio-economic factors.

Filariasis is one of the major public health concerns in India. Approximately 600 million people spread across 250 districts of India are at risk of filariasis. To predict this disease, a pilot scale study was carried out in 30 villages of Karimnagar district of Telangana from 2004 to 2007 to collect epidemiological and socio-economic data. The collected data are analysed by employing various machine learning techniques such as Naïve Bayes (NB), logistic model tree, probabilistic neural network, J48 (C4.5), classification and regression tree, JRip and gradient boosting machine. The performance

A spatial fractional diffusion model for predicting the characteristics of VOCs emission in porous dry building material.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) concentrations of dry building materials can significantly affect the quality of indoor air. In this paper, a spatial fractional diffusion model is established by introducing fractional Fick's law, based on the fact that the pore structure of porous building materials has a strongly impact on VOCs diffusion. Furthermore, the areal porosity of the material is drawn into the convection mass transfer equation. The relevant parameters are estimated by a kind of optimization algorithm. The fractional nonlinear equations are tackled by the finite difference method c

Efficient prediction designs for random fields.

For estimation and predictions of random fields, it is increasingly acknowledged that the kriging variance may be a poor representative of true uncertainty. Experimental designs based on more elaborate criteria that are appropriate for empirical kriging (EK) are then often non-space-filling and very costly to determine. In this paper, we investigate the possibility of using a compound criterion inspired by an equivalence theorem type relation to build designs quasi-optimal for the EK variance when space-filling designs become unsuitable. Two algorithms are proposed, one relying on stochastic o

Structures of [Ag7(SR)4]- and [Ag7(DMSA)4]-.

We have developed a new genetic algorithm approach to search for the global lowest-energy structures of ligand-protected metal clusters. In combination with density functional theory, our genetic algorithm simulations show that the ground state of [Ag(7)(DMSA)(4)](-) has eight instead of four Ag-S bonds and has a much lower energy than the structure based on the [Ag(7)(SR)(4)](-) cluster with a quasi-two-dimensional Ag(7) core. The simulated X-ray diffraction pattern of the [Ag(7)(DMSA)(4)](-) cluster is in good agreement with the experimental result. Our calculations for the [Ag(7)(SR)(4)](-)

[The neural network algorithm for diagnosis of ischemic stroke pathogenetic subtypes].

The pathogenetic subtype of ischemic stroke (IS) in 204 cases of acute ischemic stroke was based on the results of clinical estimation, computer tomography, duplex scanning of brain vessels, electrocardiography, echocardiography and Holter monitoring. Initially, experts assigned a diagnosis of large-artery atherosclerosis to 59 (29%) patients, cardio embolic subtype to 51 (25%), small-vessel occlusion to 43 (21%), stroke of other etiology to 10 (5%), stroke of unclear etiology to 41 (20%). The TOAST computerized algorithm has been used for stroke subtypes diagnosis but it failed in 73% of the

Diagnostic performance of radiomic features from FS-T2WI for parotid tumor classification: A comparison of deep learning and machine learning models.

Accurate discrimination of benign and malignant parotid tumors prior to surgery is of great clinical significance. Conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) still has limitations in terms of objective quantification, and the optimal radiomic modeling strategy for parotid lesions has yet to be established. We extracted radiomic features from fat-suppressed T2-weighted (FS-T2WI) images of 102 patients with pathologically confirmed parotid tumors and constructed four machine learning models (logistic regression, gradient boosting, random forest, and LightGBM) as well as four tabular deep lear

AI-powered surveillance of bronchiolitis in the Nirsevimab era: comparative performance of machine learning, deep learning, and large language models on free-text ED records.

BACKGROUND: Bronchiolitis remains a frequent reason for hospitalization in infants during the winter season. Epidemiologic surveillance remains crucial in the era of widespread immunoprophylaxis for the leading viral agent causing bronchiolitis. We investigated the performance of classical machine learning (ML) models, Deep Learning (DL), and a pre-trained large language model (LLM) in classifying bronchiolitis diagnosis from the free-text-diagnosis field of the emergency department electronic health records (EHRs). As a secondary aim, we evaluated the diagnostic accuracy of the actual officia

Machine learning models for predicting cerebrospinal fluid bacterial culture outcomes in post-neurosurgical meningitis-development and temporal three-year validation.

Post-neurosurgical bacterial meningitis (PNBM) is a serious complication associated with substantial morbidity and mortality. Bacterial culture presently serves as the gold standard for diagnosis, however, clinical reliance on third-tier reports to address empirical antibiotic concerns, with a turnaround time of 3-5 days, can lead to imprecise antibiotic administration in patients. Therefore, we develop and validate a branch of machine learning method to predict the result of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) culture, which can shorten the time for precise diagnosis to within 2 h. A cohort study was c
