The quality of perceived parenting experienced by a group of Scottish incarcerated young offenders and its relation to psychological distress.

This study utilized the Parental Bonding Instrument [PBI] in a group of 125 incarcerated Scottish young offenders aged 16-21. The study examined the response profiles of young offenders and compared the results to normative data and demographics relating to family and penal experiences. Furthermore, it investigated relationships between parenting style and levels of depression, anxiety and hopelessness experienced during incarceration. Significant differences between the current sample and the normative sample were found. Stepwise regression analyses highlighted the role that parental overprot

Behavior and personality traits among DUI arrestees, nonarrested impaired drivers, and nonimpaired drivers.

Eight types of drinking driver groups were compared on several personality and behavior traits. It was found that impaired drivers arrested after an accident or moving violation were significantly higher in hostility, psychopathic deviance, nontraffic arrests, frequency of impaired driving, accidents after drinking, and drinks consumed per week than impaired drivers caught in roadblocks. Neither impaired drivers stopped in roadblocks nor impaired drivers never arrested differed from nonimpaired drinking drivers or nondrinking drivers on most measures examined.

Physical and psychological sequelae to torture. A controlled clinical study of exiled asylum applicants.

The study comprised 24 male Lebanese refugees living in Denmark. Twelve of them alleged having been tortured in Lebanon during the period 1981-85. The remaining twelve had neither been imprisoned nor tortured and thus acted as control persons. All the testimonies were found to be valid according to a method previously used by the author. The most common forms of torture were blows against the head, body and foot soles, suspension and asphyxiation. Threats and solitary confinement were frequent, and sexual violations were also reported. At the time of examination (March-November 1986), the main

A collaborative effort to enhance HIV/STI screening in five county jails.

Funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) supports collaborations among health departments (CA, FL, GA, IL, MA, NJ, NY), correctional facilities, and community-based organizations to improve services to HIV-infected inmates, particularly as they return to the community. Additionally, HRSA funded the Evaluation and Program Support Center to guide the implementation of a multi-site evaluation of the Corrections Demonstration Project (CDP). The authors present a model approach to the problem of health disparities that i

Psychopathological profiles of inmates convicted for femicide, other familial homicides, or attempted homicides.

Femicides and family-related homicides represent a significant concern, with over 50% of homicides occurring within the family setting. This study aimed to explore the complex factors, including psychological aspects, behind such crimes, focusing on a sample of inmates incarcerated for homicide, attempted homicide, or femicide. The study analyzed data from 11 inmates (8 males, 3 females) incarcerated for homicide or attempted homicide. Demographic, clinical, and criminological data were collected, and psychological functioning was assessed using the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS) and th

Prevalence and correlates of drug use during incarceration among people with opioid use disorder: A focused decision tree analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Substance use disorder is prevalent among incarcerated populations. However, gaps remain in the literature regarding the prevalence of incarcerated drug use and the factors associated with this behavior. This study explores the correlates of incarcerated drug use among individuals recently released from incarceration. METHODS: We used data from the multi-site TCN PATHS study, a hybrid type-1 trial, which recruited people with OUD just prior or immediately following release from incarceration. At baseline, participants reported incarcerated drug use, past criminal legal involveme

The Long Arm of Incarceration: Incarceration History and Mortality Risk in a Nationally Representative Cohort of Older US Adults, 2012-2022.

Objectives. To evaluate whether incarceration history is associated with mortality risk among older adults in the United States. Methods. We used data from the 2012/2014-2022 Health and Retirement Study, a nationally representative longitudinal panel of US adults aged 51 years and older. We estimated mortality risk using Gompertz proportional hazards models and calculated average marginal effects to estimate predicted years of life lost. Additional models examined results for men and age groups. We used matched analyses to assess robustness. Results. Incarceration history was associated with a

"So what's gonna happen when I get out of here?" Qualitative barriers and facilitators to MOUD continuity post-release from jail.

BACKGROUND: Medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD) treatment is increasingly available within jails, but little is known about patient experiences regarding treatment continuity post-release. METHODS: Between 2021 and 2022, we interviewed 38 recently-released people who received MOUD in Massachusetts county jails. We asked participants about their experiences with reentry and MOUD continuity post-release. Thematic analyses were framed by the social-ecological model. RESULTS: At the individual-interpersonal level, participants reported the importance of self-advocacy during incarceration t

Sociodemographic and clinical factors associated with jail entry after a mental health crisis.

Individuals who experience mental health crises frequently find themselves in contact with the criminal legal system. Strengthening the capacity of mental health crisis services to engage with those at high risk for incarceration is a priority both for those who experience crises and those responsible for service delivery. This retrospective analysis included 10,269 mental health crisis episodes among 6861 individuals from 2021 to 2022 in San Francisco, California, USA. We examined the sociodemographic and episode-level characteristics most associated with incarceration in the county's jail wi

"Is that a policy thing or is that a guard thing?": A qualitative study of providers' experiences supporting pregnant individuals incarcerated in Ontario, Canada.

BACKGROUND: Incarcerated pregnant individuals face barriers to perinatal care and health disparities when compared to the general population. Social and healthcare providers serving incarcerated pregnant clients are uniquely positioned to identify systemic barriers which hinder clients' access to care and service delivery. This study explores the experiences of providers and the systemic challenges they encounter while delivering perinatal health and social services to individuals incarcerated in Ontario, Canada. METHODS: We conducted a qualitative study using a descriptive design. We adminis

Prior incarceration and food insecurity trajectories through older adulthood: findings from the Health and Retirement Study.

INTRODUCTION: Prior cross-sectional research has identified incarceration as a risk factor for food insecurity across the life course. However, there is a lack of longitudinal studies on the relationship between prior incarceration and food insecurity over time. METHODS: This study uses biennial data across 10 time points from the Health and Retirement Study (years 2012-2022) to examine the association between prior incarceration and longitudinal trajectories of food insecurity among adults aged 55 and older in the USA (N=8229). Group-based trajectory modelling was used to assess patterns of

Evaluation of an in-jail and post-release comprehensive treatment model for opioid use disorder in Massachusetts.

INTRODUCTION: Incarcerated individuals with opioid use disorder experience high rates of opioid-related mortality upon release. Buprenorphine and methadone are effective at reducing mortality rates in this population, but evidence for extended-release naltrexone is mixed. We evaluated a comprehensive jail-based program in Massachusetts (MATADOR 2.0), which combined extended-release naltrexone and recovery navigator support before and after release. METHODS: We examined opioid-related mortality up to one year after release among participants in MATADOR 2.0 using propensity-matched comparison g

Telemedicine virologic and immunologic outcomes in people living with HIV (PLWH) in a correctional setting during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: It is known that SARS-CoV-2 infection increases the risk of severe illness in patients who are immunocompromised as compared to the general public. To combat this issue, telemedicine was utilized to combat the issue of general access to care to decrease the risk of exposure of SARS-CoV-2 infection in various settings. However, there is very little data on adequate continuity of care (COC) and sustainability of telehealth throughout the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. There is even less data on the effects of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic in special populations, such as people living with human immu

Characteristics Associated With Sustained Viral Suppression Status Among People With HIV Who Were Incarcerated in the Past 12 Months, 2015-2022.

OBJECTIVES: People with HIV (PWH) who transition back into the community after incarceration often experience treatment disruptions, increasing the risk of poor outcomes. We examined factors associated with sustained viral suppression (SVS) after release. METHODS: We analyzed 2015-2022 data from a nationally representative sample of PWH (N = 1012). We used weighted percentages and 95% CIs to describe the characteristics of recently incarcerated PWH by postrelease SVS status. We calculated prevalence ratios (PRs) to identify factors associated with SVS. RESULTS: Among PWH who were incarcerate

Moral Injury in Correctional Health Care.

Due to the complex nature of correctional facilities, correctional health care professionals (CHPs) are at high risk of experiencing the harms of helping such as burnout, vicarious trauma, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Although traditionally applied to military populations, the construct of moral injury has gained increasing application to health care and bears relevance to correctional health care. This qualitative study examines the prevalence of moral injury among CHPs while considering the moral dilemmas and ethical challenges of delivering care in a carceral environment. Empl

Protective Factors to Promote Health and Flourishing in Black Youth Exposed to Parental Incarceration.

BACKGROUND: Mass incarceration of Black fathers and mothers in the United States has had an undeniably negative effect on the health and well-being of their children, families, and communities. Nearly 1 in every 9 Black youth in the United States has had an incarcerated parent compared to 1 in every 17 White youth. To mitigate the consequences of such historical and structural racism, family and community protective factors that promote health and flourishing in Black youth need exploration. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to understand the associations of protective family, school, and
