BACKGROUND: Transarterial ductal occlusion with the Amplatzer vascular plug was first reported in dogs by Hogan et al in 2005.
HYPOTHESIS: Use of the Amplatzer vascular plug is a safe, efficacious method of patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) occlusion.
ANIMALS: Thirty-one client-owned dogs with PDA.
METHODS: Records of 31 dogs in which transarterial occlusion of PDA with an Amplatzer vascular plug was attempted were reviewed.
RESULTS: All dogs had a type II PDA, with 27 dogs having type IIA morphology and 4 dogs having type IIB morphology. Appropriate device deployment was achieved in 29 of 31

The success depends on the precise anatomic definition of the defect and its relation to other cardiac structures. Improved carotid artery stenting (CAS) results are credited to the development of embolic protection devices (EPDs). Reported are outcomes and technical failures of two classes of EPDs: distal balloon occlusion and distal filtration. Ventricular septal defect is the most common congenital heart malformation. Surgical closure, when indicated, has been practiced for over 50 years with good results; however, surgical closure is still associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Over the past decade, several occluding devices have been developed that made catheter device closure an attractive alternative to surgery with widely satisfactory results. In this article, a comprehensive review of percutaneous and perventricular (hybrid) device closure of each type of ventricular septal defect is presented.

In a 56-year-old woman with a secundum-type atrial septal defect, a closure device was successfully implanted with primarily adequate positioning of the occluder. Two weeks after discharge, the patient developed paroxysmal coughing that probably led to a device dislocation. Months later, a considerable left-to-right shunt was detected, and the device was found to be ingrown in a defective position and had to be removed surgically. In conclusion, the case demonstrates that recurrent coughing may interfere with closure devices and may lead to dangerous dislocation.

OBJECTIVE: Symptomatic, anatomic and urodynamic results of a composite transobturatory tension-free sling with an absorbable middle part, in patients with stress urinary incontinence (SUI), were studied.
METHODS: A prospective study in 40 women with SUI was performed. Symptoms, urodynamics and anatomical improvements were evaluated separately. Surgery was performed with the transobturatory approach.

Achieving a stable repair of mitral valve prolapse can be difficult in complex pathologies, and a 5% to 20% late reoperation rate exists with leaflet resection and reconstruction. Patients operated on for complex congenital heart malformations need continuous follow-up. We present a male patient born in 1948 with Fallot's anomaly. A total correction was performed when he was 21 years old. Twenty-eight years after the operation, at routine follow-up, he presented with a significant left-to-right shunt because of a new ventricular septal defect. During the operation we found the original patch to be fractured with a central perforation. The patient received a new patch and has been without any clinical symptoms since.
