Glaucoma can be induced in domestic chicks at the will of the investigator, by the simple device of rearing the chicks under continuous light. This light-induced avian glaucoma (LIAG) is presented as an animal model system for human open-angle glaucoma. A number of morphological and physiological findings in LIAG are reviewed, and the LIAG system is compared with several other glaucoma model systems, in dogs, rabbits and monkeys. Following surgery for pituitary adenoma, radiation therapy is an accepted treatment in reducing tumor recurrence. However, a potential therapeutic complication is delayed radionecrosis of perisellar neural structures, including the optic nerves and chiasm. Gadolinium (Gd)-DTPA complex was assessed as a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) contrast-enhancing agent by experimentally imaging normal and diseased animals. After intravenous injection, Gd-DTPA, a strongly paramagnetic complex by virtue of unpaired electrons, was rapidly excreted into the urine of rats, producing an easily observable contrast enhancement on NMR images in kidney parenchyma and urine. Left subclavian artery occlusion developed in a patient 42 years after a left radical mastectomy and radiotherapy. The vascular supply was successfully reconstructed by a graft from the right subclavian artery to the left brachial artery. Clinical and experimental evidence has demonstrated that radiotherapy can damage large vessels [2,4,5]. It is our contention that radiotherapy was the causative factor in the case of subclavian artery occlusion reported herein.

The incidence of hypothyroidism in 1396 Chinese patients in Hong Kong treated for hyperthyroidism with 131I therapy is presented using the life-table method of analysis. One year after therapy only 6% of patients were hypothyroid, but the subsequent annual incidence was 3.5%, emphasising the need for life-time surveillance of these patients. The vastus lateralis muscle can provide a broad sheet of muscle for repair of defects of the lower abdomen, groin, perineum, hip, and ischium. The authors limit the use of the vastus lateralis muscle to situations in which more traditional techniques are not feasible. This muscle is especially suitable for defects involving irradiated tissue, infected bone, or infected prosthetic material. Although the vastus lateralis muscle has no cutaneous component, it may be used to augment an overlying tensor fascia lata flap.

Experiences with 30 latissimus dorsi flaps are described. Used either as a muscle flap, as a myocutaneous flap, or as an "island" of skin nourished by a subcutaneous pedicle of muscle and vessels, the flap has an excellent blood supply and is suitable for many repairs of defects of the chest wall.

Ureteral obstruction following radiotherapy for cervical cancer is most often due to recurrent tumor. However, in a few patients ureteral stricture is secondary to radiation damage. Surgical treatment of this obstruction requires special consideration since many procedures for urinary diversion may be contraindicated in an irradiated pelvis. The cases of 1013 patients with carcinoma of the cervix are reviewed, who underwent primary radiation treatment in the time from 1951 through 1968. This patient-population is analyzed. The radiation method is described. Out of 1013 women, 496 (49%) survived without recurrences for five years: 80.8% had Stage I disease; 69.7%, Stage II; 38.8%, Stage III; 7.7%, Stage IV. The five-year survival amounted to 53.0%, the relative effectiveness to 61.5 per cent. Complications, side-effects and secondary diseases are reported, as well as the observations of recurrences found by us.
