[Olfactory function in patients undergoing FESS for chronic rhinosinusitis].

Patients with chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) often suffer from loss of olfactory function. Rhinosinusitis can be treated either by medical therapy or surgically (FESS). Postoperative outcome in terms of improving sense of smell has been controversial so far. The aim of our study was to determine the patients who would have better postoperative outcomes in terms of improving olfactory function. We collected data of patients undergoing FESS for chronic rhinosinusitis (either with or without nasal polyps) at our department during the years 2012-2015. These patients had their olfactory function exam

Deadly Sphenoid Fungus-Isolated Sphenoid Invasive Fungal Rhinosinusitis: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Acute invasive fungal rhinosinusitis (AIFRS) is a potentially fatal infection, usually affecting immunocompromised patients. Isolated sphenoid sinus involvement is rare and has been reported in only a few cases. We discuss the clinical characteristics, histopathologic features, and differential diagnosis of AIFRS of the sphenoid sinus. CASE PRESENTATION: A 57-year-old man with a history of refractory non-Hodgkin lymphoma and neutropenia presented with a 1-week duration of left-sided headache and ipsilateral cheek paresthesia. Nasal endoscopy showed mucoid drainage from the sphen

Association of gastro-oesophageal reflux and chronic rhinosinusitis: systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Data science education in K-12 settings often lacks authentic, hands-on experiences that allow students to meaningfully engage with data practices such as data collection, organization, visualization, and interpretation. Project-based learning provides a pedagogically grounded approach for developing these skills by situating data work within real scientific inquiry. The NIH SEPA-funded WInSTEP-SEPA (Wisconsin Inquiry-based Science Teacher Education Partnership-Science Education Partnership Award) portal was designed to operationalize this approach by embedding data science and dat

The relationship between serum vitamin D and chronic rhinosinusitis: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: An exciting development in upper respiratory tract disease is the pathophysiology of vitamin D (VD3). There now is substantial literature to indicate that VD3 acts as an immunomodulator of adaptive and innate immunity locally within the respiratory epithelium. Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) places a relatively large socioeconomic burden on developed nations, yet remains a difficult disease to treat. VD3, therefore, has become an area of clinical interest because it may provide an adjunctive drug therapy option in CRS, thereby potentially improving the quality of life of these patient

Olfaction in Chronic Rhinosinusitis.

Olfactory dysfunction is a frequent complaint in chronic rhinosinusitis patients and has a significant impact on quality of life. Therefore, it is essential that clinicians are aware of the importance of olfactory dysfunction in chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) patients and know how to deal with it. Notably, the evaluation of olfactory function (i.e., using psychophysical testing) and imagery of olfactory bulb play an important role in the evaluation of patients and give essential information about the "baseline" olfactory function. Because the high impact of olfactory function on quality of life

Differential Diagnosis of Chronic Rhinosinusitis with Nasal Polyps.

Nasal polyps are semi-translucent mucosal outgrowths of the paranasal sinuses which typically arise in the setting of chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). Nasal polyps are also associated with asthma, aspirin sensitivity, cystic fibrosis and allergic fungal rhinosinusitis (AFS). The majority of nasal polyps are bilateral and characterized by tissue edema and eosinophil infiltration. Patients with nasal polyps often present with complaints including nasal obstruction, congestion, rhinorrhea or altered sense of smell. The differential diagnosis ranges from benign masses such as schneiderian papilloma,

The impact of sinus surgery on sleep outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) is standard for patients who fail medical management of chronic sinusitis (CRS). The beneficial impact of surgery on CRS is well known. However, patients often note that their sleep is improved after FESS even without simultaneous correction of nasal obstruction. Sleep outcomes after FESS are significantly understudied. Hence in the current study we look to characterize patient sleep quality following sinus surgery. METHODS: Data was gathered from 2 sites (Western University [Canada] and the Asia Sleep Center [Singapore]). Patients meetin

Birthweight and the risk of atopic diseases: the ISAAC Phase III study.

BACKGROUND: The association between birthweight and asthma, eczema and rhinoconjunctivitisis conflicting. AIMS: To examine the association between birthweight and symptoms of asthma, eczema and rhinoconjunctivitis. METHODS: Parents or guardians of children aged 6–7 yr completed written questionnaires about symptoms of asthma, rhinoconjunctivitis and eczema, and several risk factors, including birthweight. RESULTS: There were 162,324 children from 60 centres in 26 countries. Low birthweight(<2.5 kg) was associated with an increased risk of symptoms of asthma (current wheeze odds ratio = 1.20

Increased noneosinophilic nasal polyps in chronic rhinosinusitis in US second-generation Asians suggest genetic regulation of eosinophilia.

In this study we found a significantly lower eosinophilia in nasal polyps surgically removed from second-generation Asian patients, similar to studies of native-born patients in Asian countries, suggesting the hypothesis that there may be genetic regulation of eosinophilia.

Good's syndrome, CVID, and selective antibody deficiency in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis.

Good's syndrome and common variable immune deficiency (CVID) are associated with chronic rhinosinusitis. Good's syndrome is characterized by hypogammaglobulinemia, B-cell depletion, variable defects in cellular immunity and thymoma. Immunodeficiency and recurrent infections can initially present after thymectomy. The pathogenesis can involve cytokines from bone marrow along with genetic defects. Intravenous gamma globulin (IVIG) restores defective signaling and can reestablish immune homeostasis. IVIG at regular intervals is the most effective way to improve the clinical symptoms and reduce pa

Absorbable and nonabsorbable packing after functional endoscopic sinus surgery: systematic review and meta-analysis of outcomes.

The purpose of the study was to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis of the literature to compare the efficacy (and other postoperative outcomes) of nonabsorbable versus absorbable nasal packing after functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) for the treatment of chronic rhinosinusitis. Studies were considered for inclusion if they were published in English language, were randomized clinical trials, and reported on outcomes following postoperative synechia. The primary outcome for meta-analysis was the incidence of postoperative synechia; pooled odds ratios (ORs) and 95 % confidence

Zygomatic implants placed using the zygomatic anatomy-guided approach versus the classical technique: a proposed system to report rhinosinusitis diagnosis.

PURPOSE: The first aim of this study is to compare the outcomes in rehabilitating the atrophic maxilla using zygomatic implants (ZIs) and regular implants (RIs) using the classical zygomatic technique (CZT) versus the zygomatic anatomy-guided approach (ZAGA). The second goal of this paper is to propose a standardized system to report rhinosinusitis diagnosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-two consecutive zygomatic patients operated on from 1998 to 2002 and 80 consecutive zygomatic patients operated on from 2004 to October 2009 were selected. All included patients were in a maintenance program
