BACKGROUND: Dermoscopic screening facilitates early detection of melanoma and is recommended in patients with multiple or atypical nevi.
OBJECTIVES: To investigate whether dermoscopic features of acquired melanocytic nevi differ between six body sites (neck, axilla, pectoral area, shoulders, buttocks, legs) and the trunk.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: One hundred six patients with atypical nevi syndrome from a Digital Dermoscopy Unit were evaluated for the presence of nevi in each of seven body sites, and nevi representative of each region were selected as the predominant nevi. Dermoscopic features

Leopard complex spotting is a group of white spotting patterns in horses caused by an incompletely dominant gene (LP) where homozygotes (LP/LP) are also affected with congenital stationary night blindness. Previous studies implicated Transient Receptor Potential Cation Channel, Subfamily M, Member 1 (TRPM1) as the best candidate gene for both CSNB and LP. RNA-Seq data pinpointed a 1378 bp insertion in intron 1 of TRPM1 as the potential cause. This insertion, a long terminal repeat (LTR) of an endogenous retrovirus, was completely associated with LP, testing 511 horses (χ(2)=1022.00, p<<0.0005)

PURPOSE: To determine the efficacy of excimer light in the treatment vitiligo and to assess parameters affecting therapeutic results.
METHODS: This retrospective study analyzed 227 patches of vitiligo in 142 patients. Treatment was performed twice weekly and treatment efficacy was assessed by two independent dermatologists. Patients who received less than 24 treatment sessions were excluded from the analysis of predictive factors for response.
RESULTS: Sixty-eight (30.0%) patches achieved more than 50% repigmentation, and 42 (18.5%) achieved more than 75% repigmentation. The mean treatment n

Vitiligo is a relatively common acquired disorder, characterized by progressive loss of melanocytes from the epidermis and the epidermal appendages. The disease is associated with considerable morbidity because of a major impact on the quality of life. The treatment for vitiligo is generally unsatisfactory and challenging. There are a variety of therapeutic possibilities including topical corticosteroids, topical calcineurin inhibitors, as well as phototherapy with Psoralen plus UVA (PUVA), narrow-band UVB, and a 308-nm excimer laser and/or lamps. Furthermore, surgical methods encompass grafti

BACKGROUND: The lack of well-established diagnostic criteria for pigmented solar (actinic) keratosis (PSK) along with its poorly understood etiopathogenesis has contributed to underrecognition.
OBJECTIVE: The clinical, dermatoscopic, and histopathologic features of PSK and the cause of the pigmentation are elucidated.
METHODS: In all, 167 histologic specimens, 22 clinical images, and 17 dermatoscopic images of PSK were reviewed. In 38 cases, Melan-A-stained sections were available for analysis.
RESULTS: The majority of the lesions were located on the head and neck (84%). A separate pigmente

While being treated with azathioprine and dexamethasone, a 21-year old man with myasthenia gravis suddenly developed rapidly progressing brown macules, predominantly on the trunk, palms and soles. We made a diagnosis of eruptive melanocytic nevi (EMN). This rare entity can appear after blistering skin diseases, in immunocompromised patients, and, in particular, during immunosuppressive therapy for autoimmune diseases. Since therapeutic regimens including azathioprine have been frequently reported in association with EMN, we recommended to our patient a treatment switch to mycophenolic acid to

Dicer is an essential cytosolic enzyme necessary for processing pre-microRNAs into mature microRNAs (miRNAs). Although a variety of malignancies have been attributed to perturbations in the miRNA machinery, there has been little research conducted on the role of miRNAs in cutaneous malignant melanoma and its premalignant lesions. In this small pilot study, we therefore investigated the distribution of Dicer by immunohistochemistry in cutaneous malignant melanomas, as well as in benign and dysplastic melanocytic nevi. Dicer was assessed in ten cutaneous malignant melanomas (CMM), benign melanoc

Segmental vitiligo is often ascribed to the neurogenic theory of melanocyte destruction, although data about the initial etiopathological events are scarce. Clinical, histopathological and T-cell phenotypic analyses were performed during the early onset of a segmental vitiligo lesion in a patient with associated halo nevi. Histopathological analysis revealed a lymphocytic infiltrate, mainly composed of CD8+ T-cells and some CD4(+) T-cells around the dermo-epidermal junction. Flow cytometry analysis of resident T-cells revealed a clear enrichment of pro-inflammatory IFN-gamma producing CD8+ T-c

Pityriasis versicolor is a common superficial mycoses of the skin. It is now recognized that the causative organisms of this infection are different species of Malassezia. The aim of this study was to determine the distribution of Malassezia species in patients with pityriasis versicolor in Adana, Turkey. In total, 97 patients positive for Malassezia elements, namely, yeast cells and short hyphae in microscopic examination, were included in the study. All samples were inoculated in plates containing modified Dixon's medium. However, only 44 of the patients (45.4%) showed Malassezia spp. in cul

Mycosis fungoides, a cutaneous T-cell lymphoma, typically presents as indolent, progressive, and persistent erythematous patches or plaques with mild scaling and over time can evolve into tumor stage with tumor nodules. Other presentations include eczematous, psoriasiform, poikilodermatous, and hypopigmented patches. We report Mycosis fungoides in a 14-year-old boy presenting as pigmented purpuric dermatitis and review the relevant literature. This is a rare presentation of a condition that is uncommon in the pediatric population. In our patient, histologic features were typical of Mycosis fun
