Metabolic Coherence of the Mouse Brain.

The brain's metabolic demands are well established, but how metabolism is coordinated across anatomically distinct regions remains poorly understood. Here, using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) imaging integrated with the Allen Brain Atlas and optimal transport-based computational analysis, we map the spatial metabolome across twelve major mouse brain divisions. We define an optimal-transport-derived inter-regional metabolite similarity metric and refer to it as metabolic coherence. This structure is largely preserved in an amyloid mouse model of Alzheimer's disease despite

Family Structure, Dwelling and Household Factors, and the Mental Health of Immigrant and Canadian-Born Mothers.

AIMS: To investigate the association between household contextual factors and the mental health of immigrant and Canadian-born mothers. METHODS: Guided by Bronfenbrenner's Ecological Systems Theory, we used the General Social Survey 2016, 2017 and 2018 to examine the differences in family and dwelling characteristics of immigrant and Canadian-born mothers. We then used multivariable binary logistic regression models to estimate associations between family structure, income, marital status, household size, and dwelling type and ownership, and the odds of having poor or fair self-rated mental h

Exploring stress and coping among black women in early midlife with elevated blood pressure in a safety-net health system: a qualitative focus group protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Black women in early midlife experience disproportionate exposure to stress and elevated cardiovascular risk, including hypertension. Despite this, few stress management interventions are designed with and for this population. This study aims to explore the lived experiences of stress and coping among black women in early midlife with elevated blood pressure to inform the codesign of a culturally relevant, multilevel stress management intervention. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: We will conduct one-time, semistructured focus groups with black women aged 35-50 who have elevated blood pres

Experience-dependent changes in functional connectome fingerprinting.

The human functional connectome, derived from functional magnetic resonance imaging, is sufficiently unique and stable to serve as an individual "fingerprint", leading some to view it as a neural proxy of the self. However, it remains unclear whether this fingerprinting property persists following exposure to extreme or highly uniform environments. In a longitudinal study, male infantry soldiers and a comparison group of male university students each underwent four resting-state scans across key life milestones. We tracked changes in within-individual versus between-individual similarity in fu

The evolutionary neurobiology of age-related division of labour: brain architecture and precocial behaviour in the ancestral ant Stigmatomma pallipes.

Age-related behaviour is fundamental to the organization of insect societies, but its neurobiological evolution is not well understood. Contrasting sharply with most species in which workers do not forage immediately after adult eclosion, in the 'social fossil' ant Stigmatomma pallipes newly eclosed workers hunt for and directly provision larvae with centipedes, precociously linking foraging and nursing. We analysed the adaptive development of brain size and structure that facilitates rapid behavioural maturation in S. pallipes. Our results demonstrate that the worker brain and most of its fun

Development of the low back health awareness in patient transfer scale for operating room and intensive care unit staff and evaluation of factors associated with low back pain.

OBJECTIVES: Low back pain is a widespread musculoskeletal problem that causes significant social and economic burdens by leading to loss of working capacity and functional impairment. Those who transfer patients, particularly operating theatre and intensive care staff, are at high risk. This study aimed to develop the low back health awareness in patient transfer scale (LBHAPTS) and evaluate the prevalence, risk factors and consequences of back pain among these personnel. METHODOLOGY: This methodological study developed the LBHAPTS through item generation, content validity, pilot testing, fac

The interaction network of health-related quality of life in elderly people living with HIV: a cross-sectional study in Chongqing, China.

As antiretroviral therapy has become widely accessible, the number of elderly people living with HIV (PLWH) (≥ 50 years) has risen markedly. Their health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is shaped by intertwined biological, psychological, and social determinants. This study aimed to characterize the interaction structure of these factors using a network approach and to identify potential targets for intervention. We conducted a cross-sectional study including 802 HIV-positive individuals aged 50 years or older in Chongqing, China. A mixed graphical model (MGM) with EBIC selection and LASSO regu

Cerebellar Electrical Activity as a Marker for Predicting Brain Health and Disease: A Review.

The cerebellum is traditionally considered a structure responsible for motor control, but it is also involved in auditory perception, vocalization, speech, memory, emotional control, and social cognition. Due to its high intrinsic synaptic plasticity and complex connectivity with other brain regions, it is of potential interest for monitoring adaptive responses under various physiological and pathological conditions to capture global brain dynamics. Nevertheless, the use of electrocerebellography (ECeG) to detect changes in cerebellar electrical activity is limited, and a systematic evaluation

Pediatric Dental Education in China: Current Status, Challenges, and Pathways to Improvement-A Narrative Review.

Pediatric dental diseases, notably dental caries, malocclusion, and dental trauma, remain a significant public health challenge in China, exerting considerable impact on children's oral and general health. Despite growing societal demand for pediatric dental care, China faces a critical shortage and uneven geographic distribution of pediatric dentists, alongside persistent urban-rural disparities in access to oral health services. These challenges underscore the urgent need for educational reforms, workforce policy adjustments, and assessment of the strengths and limitations of recent training

From Stable Traits to Dynamic Mechanisms: An Integrative Conceptual Model of Personality and Criminogenic Cognitions in the Incarcerated Population.

Criminal behavior has been explained through multiple theoretical frameworks developed independently, including general personality models (FPI, Big Five, HEXACO), maladaptive configurations (Dark Triad/Tetrad, psychopathy), and criminogenic cognitions. However, integrated analysis of this literature suggests the existence of a multilevel architecture of antisocial vulnerability rather than entirely distinct, non-communicating mechanisms. This narrative integrative review synthesizes empirical evidence regarding these frameworks in incarcerated populations, drawing predominantly on literature

The future of births via medically assisted reproduction in Italy:Scenarios to 2050.

Delayed childbearing is increasingly common in high-income societies, contributing to rising demand for medically assisted reproduction (MAR). This paper presents nine possible scenarios of the future share of MAR births on the total number of births in Italy, a country internationally known for its latest-late mean age at childbearing. We combined the latest (2023) official data and three hypotheses on the evolution of maternal mean age at childbirth (no change, slow ageing, rapid ageing) with three hypotheses on the age-specific MAR-related fertility rates (no change, moderate increase, rapi

Aminophosphonate-Derived Lipid Nanoparticles Enable Circular RNA Delivery for Functional Recovery after Spinal Cord Injury.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a devastating neurological disorder that results in severe disability and imposes a high social and economic burden. Effective recovery from SCI requires comprehensive neural repair strategies, including neurogenesis and neuroprotection. Inspired by the structure of phospholipids in nature, we developed a library of biomimetic ionizable lipids, containing aminophosphate, aminophosphoramidate, or aminophosphonate groups (AP lipids). Then, we formulated these AP lipids into lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) and examined their mRNA delivery efficiency in neurons and astrocyte

The psychological mechanism of Self-objectification: the interaction between sociocultural pressures and the self-system.

Self-objectification involves adopting an observer's perspective on the body and prioritizing appearance over internal attributes, which is most common in women. We propose that self-objectification arises from the interplay between sociocultural pressures and the self-system rather than from sociocultural forces alone. In this account, self-concept clarity functions as a susceptibility factor that conditions the internalization of appearance norms; internalization and upward social comparison then increase body surveillance and appearance-focused negative affect (e.g., body shame, dissatisfac

Physical Disability and Its Global Impact on Quality of Life, Activities of Daily Living, and Sleep Quality: A Narrative Review.

This narrative review explores the global impact of physical disability on quality of life (QOL), activities of daily living (ADL), and sleep quality. Disability encompasses impairments in body function or structure as well as limitations in daily activities and social participation, significantly affecting functional autonomy and well-being. The review highlights how physical disabilities pose challenges to independence and increase reliance on caregiving, with severity varying widely among individuals. It also addresses the critical role of sleep disturbances in exacerbating physical frailty

Molecular Underpinning of Treatment-Resistant Schizophrenia: A Putative Different Neurobiology from Treatment-Responsive Schizophrenia.

Treatment-resistant schizophrenia (TRS) affects up to one in three individuals with schizophrenia and is associated with a significant clinical, social, and economic burden. Different from treatment-responsive forms, TRS appears to involve other biological mechanisms extending beyond dopaminergic dysfunctions. This review outlines current knowledge on the molecular and cellular basis of TRS, focusing on alterations in glutamate signaling, imbalances between excitatory and inhibitory activity, disruptions in D-amino acid metabolism, and evidence of neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, and mitoc

Genetic Susceptibility to Sport-Related Muscle Injuries: Insights from the Literature and Novel Gene Candidates.

Physical activity is widely recognized for its health benefits; however, it also increases the risk of musculoskeletal soft tissue injuries, with muscle-related cases constituting a considerable proportion. These injuries impair well-being, athletic performance, and career longevity while creating substantial social and economic burdens. Their multifactorial etiology involves internal and external risk factors, and evidence suggests a heritable component influencing tissue integrity, recovery, and overall susceptibility. While genetic contributions to ligament and tendon damage are relatively

Quantifying Health Outcome Disparity in Invasive Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus Infection using Fairness Algorithms on Real-World Data.

This study quantifies health outcome disparities in invasive Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections by leveraging a novel artificial intelligence (AI) fairness algorithm, the Fairness-Aware Causal paThs (FACTS) decomposition, and applying it to real-world electronic health record (EHR) data. We spatiotemporally linked 9 years of EHRs from a large healthcare provider in Florida, USA, with contextual social determinants of health (SDoH). We first created a causal structure graph connecting SDoH with individual clinical measurements before/upon diagnosis of invasive MRSA in
