To characterize sulfate-producing microorganisms from the deteriorated sandstones of Angkor monuments in Cambodia, strains of Mycobacterium spp. were isolated from most probable number-positive cultures. All five strains isolated were able to use both elemental sulfur (S(0)) for chemolithoautotrophic growth and organic substances for chemoorganoheterotrophic growth. PURPOSE: To study cancer mortality among Swedish pulp and paper mill workers by main mill pulping process and department, and to present the Swedish part of an international exposure measurements database.
METHODS: A cohort of 18,163 male and 2,290 female workers at four sulfate and four sulfite mills, enrolled from 1939 to 1999, was followed up for mortality during 1952-2001. Standardized mortality ratios (SMRs) relative to the general Swedish population were calculated.

BACKGROUND: Acute irritant contact dermatitis (ICD) and allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) may be difficult to distinguish by clinical or histologic assessment. Reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM) enables real-time, high-resolution skin imaging in vivo.
OBJECTIVE: We sought to image, characterize, and distinguish acute ACD and ICD in vivo.
METHODS: Volunteers with ACD were patch tested with an allergen and the irritant, sodium lauryl sulfate. RCM imaging and transepidermal water loss measurements were performed at 24 and 72 hours. Biopsy specimens were correlated with RCM images.
