[Middle ear adenoma. Long-term course of a rare neoplasm].

Adenomas of the middle ear are rare benign glandular neoplasms arising from the middle ear mucosa. After previous operations 25 and 15 years before, a 67-year-old female complained about dizziness, tinnitus, and unilateral hearing loss on the left side. A tumor in the tympanum that was revealed by otoscopy could be removed completely. Histological examinations showed an adenoma of the middle ear with cholesteatoma. This was inconsistent with the histological result of the operation in 1983, which had described a hidradenoma. An exact analysis of the preparations confirmed that a middle ear ade

Eccrine porocarcinoma (malignant eccrine poroma): a clinicopathologic study of 69 cases.

The clinicopathologic characteristics of 69 cases of eccrine porocarcinoma (EP) have been studied. Seven cases of purely in situ disease are included. Forty patients were female, 29 male with ages ranging from 29 to 91 years (mean 73 years). The lower extremity represented the single most common site (44%). Other common sites were the trunk (15 cases, 24%) and head (11 cases, 18%). The histologic diagnosis of EP was predicated on the basis of an irregular tumor at least partly formed of characteristic poromatous basaloid epithelial cells displaying ductal differentiation, and significant cytol

Juvenile neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis.

A case of juvenile neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis (JNCL) diagnosed on the basis of clinical features, electrophysiologic studies and skin electron microscopy is reported. JNCL was suspected on the basis of characteristic symptoms including progressive loss of vision, seizures, mental retardation and motor disabilities. Diagnosis was confirmed by neurophysiological and biopsy studies. The disease is caused by 23 different mutations in a gene recently isolated on chromosome 16 p11.2-12.1. Although universally fatal, characterisation of mutations can help in prenatal diagnosis in future pregnanci

Ross syndrome plus: beyond horner, Holmes-Adie, and harlequin.

BACKGROUND: Ross syndrome is an uncommon disorder characterized by the triad of segmental anhidrosis, hyporeflexia, and tonic pupils. METHODS: The authors describe the clinical findings of five patients with Ross syndrome and detail the results of their pharmacologic and autonomic testing. RESULTS: In four patients, the classic findings of Ross syndrome were accompanied by Horner's syndrome. Other symptoms of dysautonomia were also common. CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that Ross syndrome is a dysautonomic condition of varying expression resulting from a generalized injury to ganglion

Apocrine adenocarcinoma presenting as a large ulcerated axillary mass.

BACKGROUND: Apocrine adenocarcinomas are one of the rarest cutaneous cancers with few reported cases. Previously regarded nonspecifically as sweat gland tumors variants, they are now established as apocrine derivatives. Most occur in the axilla. OBJECTIVE: To provide a gross and histological description of an apocrine adenocarcinoma presenting in a 49-year-old African-American man. METHODS: The mass was removed en bloc with axillary lymph node dissection. The specimens were routinely embedded, and sectioned. Hematoxylin & eosin and periodic acid Schiff staining was done. Ploidy evaluation wa…

Unusual cases of syringoma of the forehead.

Syringoma involving the forehead is rare and can be confused with other diseases that are common on the forehead. Therefore, we describe here three patients with syringoma who developed numerous skin colored papules on the forehead. To our knowledge, syringoma of the forehead was reported previously only once by Tagami et al.

Prevalence of cholinergic urticaria in young adults.

BACKGROUND: Cholinergic urticaria is primarily seen in young adults, but little is known about its prevalence. OBJECTIVE: A prospective study was designed to investigate the frequency and severity of cholinergic urticaria in this age group. METHODS: Four hundred ninety-three high school and university students (15 to 35 years of age) were examined for cholinergic urticaria by means of a questionnaire and partly by exercise provocation tests. RESULTS: The overall prevalence of cholinergic whealing was 11.2%, with most of the affected persons being older than 20 years. The highest prevalence

Endoscopic electrocautery of the thoracic sympathetic chain. A minimally invasive way to treat palmar hyperhidrosis.

Four hundred and fifty patients with palmar hyperhidrosis have undergone endoscopic thoracic sympathetic electrocautery since 1987 in our department. The procedure requires only minor modifications of standard laparoscopic and urological equipment. The median operating time for a bilateral procedure was 31 minutes (15-120), hospital stay was 1 day postoperatively (1-8), and patients returned to work within 4 (1-40) days. Complications in the whole material were few and mild, pneumothorax (n = 2), haemothorax (n = 1), and Horner's syndrome (n = 1). Five patients required reoperation (four becau

Syringoid eccrine carcinoma.

Eccrine carcinomas are locally aggressive and have an infiltrative growth pattern. They have a variable clinical appearance and a diversity of histologic findings that often make the diagnosis difficult. The histologic findings, together with immunoperoxidase and enzyme histochemical studies, usually allow differentiation between eccrine carcinomas, other cutaneous neoplasms, and visceral adenocarcinomas with skin metastases. Provided there is no evidence of distant metastases, surgical excision is the treatment of choice. We report a case of syringoid eccrine carcinoma that was treated with M

Milialike idiopathic calcinosis cutis and syringoma in Down's syndrome.

A 6-year-old girl with Down's syndrome presented milialike whitish small papules on her hands and feet and periorbital syringoma. Histopathological examination of the hand lesion revealed small localized calcium deposits and syringoma in the adjacent upper dermis. This is a very rare but typical case of calcinosis cutis with syringoma in a patient with Down's syndrome.

Pachyonychia congenita complicated by hidradenitis suppurativa: a family study.

A family is described in which five of the six members with the Jackson-Lawler type of pachyonychia congenita also had varying degrees of hidradenitis suppurativa. We suggest an association between this type of pachyonychia congenita and hidradenitis suppurativa.

[A scale for evaluating withdrawal symptoms induced by anxiolytic agents].

A scale to evaluate the withdrawal syndrome induced by tranquilizers (TWS) is proposed to distinguish between anxiety induced symptoms and withdrawal induced symptoms. This scale was established and validated by Lader, the french translation was performed by the author. The most frequently observed symptoms during a withdrawal syndrome are physical tiredness, headache, vertigo and tremor but other symptoms are evaluated by this tranquilizers withdrawal scale.

Subclinical syringoma coexisting with basal cell carcinoma.

We report three cases of clinically unapparent syringoma found incidentally on horizontal frozen tissue sections from patients undergoing Mohs micrographic excision of basal cell carcinoma (BCC). In the first case, the syringoma and BCC were admixed; in the other two cases, they were seen in close approximation to one another. In all cases, the tumors were detected on the faces of elderly women. The potential existence of a benign syringoma in association with BCC should be borne in mind, particularly in connection with Mohs micrographic excision. These tumors must be distinguished from one an

A newly recognized feature of ectrodactyly, ectodermal dysplasia, clefting (EEC) syndrome: comedone naevus.

A 21-year-old Black South African man with clinical features of ectrodactyly, ectodermal dysplasia, cleft lip/palate (EEC) syndrome is described. The patient had the following anomalies: hypoplastic, peg-shaped teeth; fine, silky hair; absent lacrimal puncta resulting in secondary photophobia, blepharitis and corneal opacities. The hands and feet showed absent digits, symphalangism and displacement of bone consistent with ectrodactyly. In addition, the patient had extensive comedone naevus, a feature not previously reported in EEC syndrome. We stress that the dysplastic ectodermal features of

The role of depilation and deodorants in hidradenitis suppurativa.

Shaving and the use of chemical depilatories, deodorants, and talcum powder have been implicated in the initiation of hidradenitis suppurativa. This study compared the use of these agents in the axillae and puboinguinoperineal (hereinafter called the inguinal) region of 40 patients with hidradenitis, prior to the onset of the condition, with their use in normal age- and sex-matched controls. No significant differences in the application of shaving, chemical depilatories, or deodorants at either site in patients with hidradenitis as compared with the normal controls were demonstrated. In both m

[Bacterial skin infections in the dog (author's transl)].

The most common bacterial skin conditions in dogs are reviewed in the present paper. An introductory part on the pathogenesis of pyoderma and some universal morphological dermatological concepts is followed by a systematic study of superficial and deep forms of pyoderma. In addition to the bacterial diagnosis, the results of bacteriological examination of fifty-three dogs with pyoderma submitted to the University Clinic of small animal medicine are reported. Moreover, a guide to the institution of adequate therapy is suggested.
