Clinicopathology of non-infectious choroiditis: evolution of its appraisal during the last 2-3 decades from "white dot syndromes" to precise classification.

Choroidal imaging investigation techniques were very limited until 2-3 decades ago.Fluorescein angiography (FA) was not suited for the analysis of the choroidal compartment and B-scan ultrasonography did not provide enough accuracy. It was on this background that a purely phenomenological approach was attempted to classify these choroiditis diseases by regrouping them under the vague potpourri term of "white dot syndromes". With the availability of precise investigational modalities of choroidal inflammation or choroiditis-induced lesions, such as indocyanine green angiography (ICGA), spectral

Non-invasive imaging of a choroidal macrovessel.

PURPOSE: To describe novel anatomic findings of an apparent choroidal macrovessel, originally misdiagnosed as a choroidal tumor, using non-invasive imaging tools. OBSERVATIONS: Initial ophthalmic examination revealed an elevated hypopigmented choroidal mass in the macular area, with a serpentine track extending temporally to the equator. Enhanced depth imaging optical coherence tomography (EDI-OCT) revealed an optically hollow lesion just outside the choroid-scleral junction (CSJ), indenting the retina and compressing the choroid from the scleral side. Optical coherence tomography angiography

Assessment of flow dynamics in retinal and choroidal microcirculation.

Alterations in ocular blood flow have been implicated in mechanisms that lead to vision loss in patients with various ocular disorders such as diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration. Assessment of retinal and choroidal blood flow is also a window to evaluate systemic diseases that affect microvasculature. Quantification and qualification of the blood flow in the retina and choroid help us understand pathophysiology, stratify disease risk, and monitor disease progression in these disorders. Multiple methods are used by researchers for assessment of blood flow, but

Visualization of corneal vascularization in peripheral hypertrophic subepithelial corneal opacification with OCT angiography.

PURPOSE: The major goal of this study was to test the hypothesis that in patients with peripheral hypertrophic subepithelial corneal opacification (PHSCO), visualization of corneal vessels is better with optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) than with conventional slit lamp microphotography. METHODS: Patients with PHSCO were included in this prospective study. The corneal findings were photographed using a slit lamp camera (Haag Streit BM 900® ) and visualized with anterior-segment OCT (Optovue XR Avanti, Fremont, California, USA). Additionally, OCTA with the Angiovue Imaging™ Syste

In vivo correlation mapping microscopy.

To facilitate regular assessment of the microcirculation in vivo, noninvasive imaging techniques such as nailfold capillaroscopy are required in clinics. Recently, a correlation mapping technique has been applied to optical coherence tomography (OCT), which extends the capabilities of OCT to microcirculation morphology imaging. This technique, known as correlation mapping optical coherence tomography, has been shown to extract parameters, such as capillary density and vessel diameter, and key clinical markers associated with early changes in microvascular diseases. However, OCT has limited spa

Causes, assessment, and treatment of stent thrombosis--intravascular imaging insights.

Stent thrombosis is a rare, but serious, complication of percutaneous coronary intervention and is associated with severe morbidity and mortality. In addition to clinical and pathological studies, intravascular imaging has advanced our understanding of the mechanisms underlying stent thrombosis. In particular, intravascular imaging has been used to study stent underexpansion, malapposition, uncovered struts, and neoatherosclerosis as risk factors for stent thrombosis. Intravascular ultrasonography and optical coherence tomography can be used to guide stent implantation and minimize the risk of

Central and peripheral corneal thinning in keratoconus.

PURPOSE: Recent data regarding the mid-peripheral portion of the removed corneal button in transplant surgery indicate histopathologically that keratoconus was present also in the peripheral portion of the button. The intent of this study was therefore to investigate if peripheral changes could also be detected clinically by measuring the central and peripheral corneal thickness of KC patients. METHODS: Corneal pachymetry was measured with the Visante optical coherence tomography and Orbscan II. Of 52 subjects, 26 were KC subjects and 26 were age- and sex-matched control subjects. RESULTS: C

[Devic syndrome--case report, current principles of diagnosis and therapy].

Neuromyelitis optica (NMO, Devic-syndrome) is a rare, relapsing autoimmune disease of the central nervous system, which is distinguished from other demyelinating disorders by a recently identified, specific autoantibody. By demonstrating the anti-aquaporin-4 IgG in the serum, a heterogenous group of syndromes can be defined, called NMO-spectrum. In the future, optical coherence tomography may support this diagnosis besides the clinical features, imaging examinations and presence of serum antibody. Early recognition and treatment can improve clinical outcome even in serious condition. Long-term

A rare pattern of 360° radiating choroidal folds associated with an orbital abscess.

A 78-year-old woman presented with periorbital swelling and visual loss in the right eye after a tooth extraction. Initial visual acuity was reduced to counting fingers in the right eye. No afferent pupillary defect was found on initial examination. Computed tomography revealed axial elongation due to increased orbital pressure caused by the orbital abscess. The authors present a case with a rare pattern of choroidal folds radiating 360° from the optic disc. Initial optical coherence tomography revealed a markedly folded Bruch's membrane and retinal pigment epithelium, which disappeared comple

Ganglioglioma of the optic nerve.

We examined a 15-year-old boy who had a ganglioglioma involving the left optic nerve, which caused proptosis, decreased vision, and optic atrophy. Computed tomography demonstrated an intraconal mass along the course of the orbital portion of the optic nerve. The only evidence of systemic neurofibromatosis was axillary freckling. The patient underwent a combined medial and lateral orbitotomy and excision of the tumor. Histologic examination demonstrated a mass composed of neurons and glial cells characteristic of ganglioglioma. After a one-year follow-up period, we have found no evidence of rec

Optic Disc Drusen in Children: An Updated Clinical and Imaging Perspective.

BACKGROUND: The optic disc in a child with optic disc drusen (ODD) frequently mimics the optic disc in a child with papilledema, which may lead to unnecessary invasive investigations. Recent advances in imaging have transformed our understanding of pediatric ODD. METHODS: We reviewed the literature from 2018 to 2025, focusing on pediatric cohorts and novel imaging modalities, including optical coherence tomography (OCT) and OCT angiography (OCTA), and artificial intelligence (AI). RESULTS: Enhanced depth imaging OCT (EDI-OCT) has become the diagnostic reference standard with high sensitivity
