We report an unusual case of a young Quarter Horse with a large dental fracture fragment displaced into the maxillary sinus, leaving an oroantral communication that caused food impaction and metaplastic calcification in the sinus and facial deformation with cutaneous fistulation. Oral extraction of a remaining tooth fragment from its alveolus was succeeded by a maxillary sinusotomy for removal of the abnormal sinus contents. Since the oroantral fistula did not heal spontaneously following the placement of a silicone dental prosthesis, minimally invasive transbuccal and transnasal endoscopic ap

Dental implants have become an option for replacement of lost canine teeth in cats. Although cats appear to manage well after a canine extraction, complications such as lip entrapment can occur after maxillary canine tooth extraction. Even cats with a complicated crown fracture of the maxillary canine tooth that have had root canal therapy can develop lip entrapment. This can lead to painful lip ulcers and potential need for further dental treatment. Canine tooth replacement with a dental implant and prosthodontic crown is, in the authors' experience, a predictable option that can be offered t

INTRODUCTION: The most important endogenous causes of erosion are eating disorders, gastro-oesophageal reflux (GERD), alcoholism and syndromes involving lowered saliva secretion.
AIM: The aim of this work is to study a patient with symptoms of somatoform autonomic dysfunction, in which significant erosive loss occurred through chemical influence of gastric acid on oral cavity.
METHODS: Seventeen years old girl was sent to Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry due to persistent nausea and vomiting, which occurred over a period of about 10 months. Because of this she was repeatedly adm

X-linked Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMTX1) results from numerous mutations in the GJB1 gene encoding the gap junction protein connexin32 (Cx32) and is one of the commonest forms of inherited neuropathy. Owing to the expression of Cx32 not only in Schwann cells but also in oligodendrocytes, a subset of CMT1X patients develops central nervous system (CNS) clinical manifestations in addition to peripheral neuropathy. While most GJB1 mutations appear to cause peripheral neuropathy through loss of Cx32 function, the cellular mechanisms underlying the CNS manifestations remain controversial. A nov

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to perform a histological evaluation of sonodynamic therapy (SDT) of hematoporphyrin monomethyl ether (HMME) on artificially induced periodontal disease in rats.
METHODS: Submerging ligatures were placed at the subgingival region of the first maxillary molar in rats. Eighty rats were randomly assigned into four groups: group 1 received no treatment; group 2 was subjected to 50 μg/mL HMME alone; group 3 was treated with low-intensity ultrasound alone (1 W/cm(2)); and group 4 was treated with 50 μg/mL HMME plus ultrasound irradiation (1 MHz, 30 minutes). BACKGROUND: Numerous reconstructive techniques for midfoot collapse secondary to Charcot neuroarthropathy have been described, but few have been studied biomechanically. The purpose of this study was to biomechanically compare 2 of the most common techniques.
METHODS: Seven paired below-knee specimens were amputated through the talonavicular and calcaneocuboid joints. The nonligamentous soft tissue was stripped proximal to the metatarsal heads and disarticulated through the tarsometatarsal (TMT) joints. For each paired specimen, the TMT joints were fused by plantar plating or intramedullary s

More than 10 years have passed since the naming of periostin derived from its expression sites in the periosteum and periodontal ligament. Following this finding, we have accumulated more data on the expression patterns of periostin, and, finally, with the generation of periostin-deficient mice, have revealed functions of periostin in the regeneration of tissues in bone, tooth, heart, and skin, and its action in cancer invasion. Since periostin is a matricellular protein, the first investigation of periostin function showed its enhancement of cell migration by acting outside the cell. On the o

External apical root resorption is a common consequence of orthodontic treatment. A number of treatment-related factors have been implicated in the pathogenesis of root resorption in orthodontic patients; however recent evidence suggests that genetic factors also play a major role in the development of this condition. Herein, we review prevalence, diagnosis and aetiology of root resorption with a particular emphasis on the effect of genetic variation and orthodontic forces, as well as discuss effective prevention strategies.

AIM: The aim of this study was to investigate oral changes in subjects who have assumed a vegan diet for a long time (at least 18 months), that is to say, a diet completely lacking in meat and animal derivatives.
METHODS: A sample of 15 subjects was analyzed, all from northern Italy and aged 24 to 60 year, composed of 11 men and 4 women who had been following a vegan diet for a minimum of 18 months to a maximum of 20 years. In parallel with the study sample, a control group (15 subjects) with the same criteria of age, sex, and place of origin all following an omnivorous diet was chosen. The s

The general population expects dentists to be well-versed in the typical and atypical orofacial characteristics of all potential patients. As a result, dentists must possess a reasonable amount of knowledge concerning the physical and intraoral traits associated with developmental disorders such as those associated with Robinow syndrome, Cockayne syndrome, and Pfeiffer syndrome. None of the physical, neurological, or oral anomalies discussed in this column present insurmountable barriers to providing dental care. Dental techniques and procedures performed on patients with any of these syndrome

OBJECTIVE: We report a rare case of avascular necrosis of the maxilla secondary to oral bisphosphonates.
METHODS: Case report and review of the world literature concerning avascular necrosis as a result of bisphosphonate therapy.
CASE REPORT: A 62-year-old woman presented with unilateral nasal obstruction, swelling of the cheek and an ulcerating lesion of the upper alveolus. She had a past medical history of osteoporosis, for which she took oral bisphosphonates. Investigation revealed necrosis of the maxilla, and avascular necrosis secondary to oral bisphosphonates was diagnosed.

Classification of neuropathies into Charcot-Marie-Tooth syndrome (CMT, hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy) or purely motor neuropathies is relatively easy in single patients but subtle sensory findings can vary in different affected individuals in a family. We examined the extent of sensory involvement in different individuals in two new X-linked neuropathy syndromes (CMTX3 and dSMAX) and in some dominantly inherited mainly motor neuropathies. CMTX3 is a mild X- linked recessive CMT phenotype linked to Xq26-28. dSMAX (distal spinal muscular atrophy linked to Xq13-21). We describe a new fa

The etiology of ectopic canines is controversial, with opinion divided as to a genetic or environmental mechanism. This study addressed the hypothesis that genetic factors play a role in the etiology of ectopic maxillary canines. Sixty-three probands were identified, and information on the dental status of 395 relatives was determined. Pedigrees were constructed and the Relative Risk calculated. Complex segregation analysis was carried out by means of the Pedigree Analysis Package. The best mathematical model obtained was a single dominant gene with autosomal transmission, incomplete penetranc

Recently, the IRF6 contribution that was reported for Van der Woude syndrome and non-syndromic oral clefts was extended to isolated tooth agenesis. Here we report the first study that tries to replicate this finding and we provide further evidence that IRF6 contributes to isolated tooth agenesis. Fifty-two sporadic tooth agenesis cases and their parents were studied. DNA samples were obtained from whole blood or saliva samples. Genotyping was performed by TaqMan assays. Linkage disequilibrium analysis and transmission distortion of the marker alleles were performed. A haplotype involving the m

Osteopetrosis is a rare genetic disorder that causes generalized sclerosis of bone due to a defect in bone resorption and remodeling. Dental abnormality may be attributed to pathological changes in bone remodeling. Osteomyelitis is well documented as a complication of osteopetrosis. This disease can be severe and difficult to treat in the osteopetrotic patient. This is a case of 10-year-old girl previously diagnosed as suffering from osteopetrosis and presenting with the complaint of swelling of jaw with extra-oral draining sinus.

UNLABELLED: A dentigerous cyst is the most common developmental odontogenic cyst and believed to be slowly progressive in nature. This case report describes an incidental finding of spontaneous regression of bilateral dentigerous cysts associated with lower impacted third molars in a 30-year-old, fully dentate female. Together with three other similar reports, a few possible explanations are postulated and the understanding of natural history of dentigerous cysts is questioned.
CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The discovery of a dentigerous cyst in a patient always warrants special attention. This article
