BACKGROUND: People with pulmonary tuberculosis are at risk of developing chronic respiratory disorders due to residual lung damage. To date, the scope of the problem in high-burden tuberculosis countries is relatively unknown.
METHODS: Chronic respiratory symptoms (cough and phlegm lasting >2 weeks) and radiological lung abnormalities were compared between adults with and without a history of tuberculosis among the general population of Uganda. Multivariable regression models were used to estimate odds ratios (ORs) with adjustment for age, gender, smoking, education, setting, and region. Rand

Musculoskeletal tuberculosis accounts for 1%-3% of all cases of tuberculosis (TB) worldwide with elbow involvement being even less common. The most cases of tuberculous arthritis occur in patients born in and emigrated from endemic regions, especially in patients who are co-infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). We present a rare case of tuberculous septic arthritis of the elbow joint in a 78-year-old African-American female from the United States, with no history of travel abroad. Her presenting symptoms included pain, swelling, and decreased range of motion of the right elbow for

Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the etiological agent of tuberculosis (TB), infects over two billion people, claiming around 1.5 million lives annually. The only vaccine approved for clinical use against this disease is the Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine. Unfortunately, BCG has limited efficacy against the adult, pulmonary form of tuberculosis. This vaccine was developed from M. bovis with antigen expression and host specificity that differ from M. tuberculosis. To address these problems, we have designed two novel, live attenuated vaccine (LAV) candidates on an M. tuberculosis background:

Massive hemoptysis is the expectoration of approximately 600 ml of blood in twenty-four hours. Major causes of massive hemoptysis are tuberculosis, bronchiectasis, pulmonary neoplasm, fungus ball, bronchial adenomas, lung abscess, intrabronchial rupture of an aortic aneurysm, cystic fibrosis, pulmonary infarction, and pulmonary trauma. Other, less common causes include Goodpasture's syndrome, broncholiths, pulmonary varix, A-V malformation, and bleeding disorders. Agenesis of the pulmonary artery usually occurs in association with congenital cardiac anomalies, and isolated unilateral absence o

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis is a major health concern in prisons, particularly where HIV prevalence is high. Our objective was to determine the undiagnosed pulmonary tuberculosis ("undiagnosed tuberculosis") prevalence in a representative sample of prisoners in a South African prison. In addition we investigated risk factors for undiagnosed tuberculosis, to explore if screening strategies could be targeted to high risk groups, and, the performance of screening tools for tuberculosis.
METHODS AND FINDINGS: In this cross-sectional survey, male prisoners were screened for tuberculosis using symptom

BACKGROUND: There are limited population-based estimates of tuberculosis incidence among human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected and HIV-uninfected infants aged < or =12 months. We aimed to estimate the population-based incidence of culture-confirmed tuberculosis among HIV-infected and HIV-uninfected infants in the Western Cape Province, South Africa.
METHODS: The incidences of pulmonary, extrapulmonary, and disseminated tuberculosis were estimated over a 3-year period (2004-2006) with use of prospective representative hospital surveillance data of the annual number of culture-confirmed t

Aspergillus fumigatus may cause infections in individuals with underlying lung damage, such as those with pulmonary tuberculosis (TB). Simultaneous exposure to A. fumigatus and Mycobacterium tuberculosis may worsen lung tissue damage, but the combined immune response to these pathogens has not yet been fully characterized. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from healthy volunteers were stimulated with A. fumigatus conidia, M. tuberculosis H37Rv lysate, or both combined. TNF and IL-1β were measured from culture supernatants. The role of different pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) imp

BACKGROUND: Adrenal tuberculosis usually presents with bilateral involvement. It has special characteristics in computed tomography (CT) images, such as small size, low attenuation in the center, and peripheral rim enhancement, which differ from those of primary tumors.
CASE SUMMARY: A 42-year-old female presented to the hospital with low back pain. She had been diagnosed with hypertension as well as pulmonary and cerebral tuberculosis but denied having any fever, fatigue, anorexia, night sweats, cough, or weight loss. Abdominal CT revealed an irregular 6.0 cm × 4.5 cm mass with uneven densit

Pneumothorax as a complication of adult cavitary pulmonary tuberculosis is well known and not at all rare, but its occurrence as a complication of miliary tuberculosis is extremely rare. We report a 22-year-old woman who had nonproductive cough and fever for 3 days. Chest radiography showed diffuse, symmetrical miliary nodulation throughout both lung fields. The patient was treated for a presumed diagnosis of miliary tuberculosis with standard antituberculous regimen. Bilateral pneumothorax occurred simultaneously during hospitalization and chest tube thoracostomy was performed. Three days lat

Pulmonary inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors (IMTs) are rarely reported in adult males. Given the low incidence of IMT and the lack of imaging references and pathological guidance, the misdiagnosis rate of IMT is high. In this article, we describe two cases of IMTs in the lungs. Both patients were adult males with lesions in the right lobe, a history of pulmonary tuberculosis, and a long period of refractory intermittent pulmonary inflammation. Our two male patients both experienced intermittent cough symptoms, but pulmonary IMTs were not suspected for a long time. Both patients were diagnose

Respiratory infections are responsible for up to 11% of febrile infections in travellers or immigrants from tropical and subtropical regions. The main pathogens are the same as in temperate climate zones: Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Chlamydophila pneumoniae, influenza viruses, Legionella pneumophila. However, some pulmonary diseases can be attributed to bacterial, parasitic, viral or fungal pathogens that are endemic in tropical and subtropical regions. The most commonly imported infections are malaria, dengue, and tuberculosis. Pulmonary symptoms a

Anthony Caplan first described rheumatoid lung nodules associated with pneumoconiosis in coal-miners (Caplan, 1953). Intraparenchymal lung nodules were later described in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients who were never exposed to coal dust and/or without pneumoconiosis. Rheumatoid lung nodules are usually detected in unselected patients: 0.2% in chest radiography and 4% in high-resolution computed tomography (Nannini et al., 2008). Patients could be reluctant to perform surgical lung biopsy for an accurate histopathological diagnosis. We present a peculiar association between a seropositive

Taiwan is an endemic area for tuberculosis (TB), and the incidence of pulmonary infection caused by nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTMs) is also increasing. This study aims to investigate the clinicopathologic characteristics of patients with NTM lung disease during 1998 to 2007 at a medical center in Taiwan. The medical records of patients with confirmed NTM pulmonary infections who underwent open lung surgery in a medical center were reviewed. Twenty-four patients with confirmed NTM pulmonary infections were identified. These patients were histologically classified into 4 types: fibrocavitary/

The existence of therapeutic agents and the bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine have not significantly affected the current tuberculosis pandemic. BCG vaccine protects against serious pediatric forms of tuberculosis but not against adult pulmonary tuberculosis, the most common and contagious form of the disease. Several vaccine candidates, including Mycobacterium tuberculosis recombinant proteins formulated in newer adjuvants or delivered in bacterial plasmid DNA have recently been described. An attractive source of vaccine candidates has been M. tuberculosis Ags present in culture supernata

BACKGROUND: Endobronchial tuberculosis (EBTB) is not seen often in the adult population. In most cases it is associated with pulmonary tuberculosis. During its course significant tracheobronchial stenosis may develop. In this study we report our experience with patients with EBTB.
METHODS: The records of 38 patients in whom EBTB had been proved by fibre optic bronchoscopy, microbiology and histology studies were evaluated.
RESULTS: Symptoms were non-specific and represented mainly the co-existing pulmonary tuberculosis. Signs characteristic of airway obstruction were rare (localized wheezing
