Tuberous sclerosis is an autosomal dominant multisystem disorder characterized by hamartomatous growths in different organs. Disease determining genes are localized to 9q34 (TSC1) and 16p13.3 (TSC2). Two women presented with severe mitral stenosis at 28th and 23rd weeks of gestation, respectively. Both did not respond to medical therapy and percutaneous balloon valvuloplasty was performed during pregnancy successfully. Deaths from lightning injuries are infrequent--0.2-0.8 per million per year. The victims are mostly young, active people who are struck during various outdoor activities in the summer months. From November 1975 to October 1998; 22 lightning burns were treated in Ankara Numune Teaching and Research Hospital. Tertian malaria is endemic in south-eastern Anatolia. As in Europe and America, in south-eastern Anatolia, an etiological agent is seldom identified in nephrotic syndrome. Two patients with Plasmodium vivax and nephrotic syndrome are described here. The possible relationship between Plasmodium vivax and nephrotic syndrome should be explored in children in endemic malarial regions.

Endocervical specimens obtained from 251 registered prostitutes working in a brothel in Izmir, were screened for Chlamydia trachomatis by using a direct fluorescent antibody test. Twenty seven of these specimens were excluded because of inadequate sampling. Of the remaining 224 samples, 57 (25.4%) were found positive for C. trachomatis. It is concluded that, prostitutes play an important role in the transmission of chlamydial and other sexually transmitted diseases, and routine screening and appropriate treatment of chlamydial infections in prostitutes will help to control this disease in the

The frequency of alpha-thalassaemia in Cyprus was determined with studies of haemoglobin Bart's in 1200 Greek Cypriot and 132 Turkish Cypriot newborn babies. Of the Greek newborns, 12.4%, and of the Turkish newborns, 6.8% had raised Hb Bart's (from 0.6% to 12.9% of the total haemoglobin) suggesting that they were carriers of either alpha-thalassaemia-1 or alpha-thalassaemia-2 genes. The findings suggest that the population of Cyprus has the highest frequencies of alpha-thalassaemia among Caucasian people.
