Spinal column damage from water ski jumping.

We conducted a radiographic survey of 117 competitive water ski jumpers to determine whether this sport can cause spinal column damage and, if so, whether damage is more likely to occur in those who participate during the period of spinal growth and development (age 15 years or younger). We found a high prevalence of two types of abnormality: Scheuermann (adolescent) spondylodystrophy (present in 26% of the skiers) and vertebral body wedging (present in 34%). The prevalence of adolescent spondylodystrophy increased with the number of years of participation in the sport before age 15 years or l…

Excitatory and inhibitory effects of morphine on the intercostal-to-phrenic respiratory reflex.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of intravenously administered morphine on the intercostal-to-phrenic reflex in spinal (C1) cats. The carotid and vertebral arteries were ligated. In addition a metal clamp was placed around the neck and tightened in order to occlude all blood flow to the brain. The animals were vagotomized, paralyzed and ventilated artificially. End-tidal PCO2 and body temperature were kept constant by means of servocontrollers. The intercostal-to-phrenic reflex was activated by rhythmic tapping of the lower thorax anteriorly with a metal bar. Three differe

Anterior decompression of the spine for metastatic epidural cord compression: a promising avenue of therapy?

Most metastatic epidural tumors arise in a vertebral body and invade the anterior epidural space. Therefore, it is logical to decompress the spine anteriorly and not by traditional laminectomy. Surgical decompression is indicated if relapse occurs after radiotherapy and further radiation cannot be administered, if there is neurological deterioration during radiotherapy, and when histological diagnosis of the primary tumor is lacking. This pilot study consists of eleven consecutive anterior decompressions of the spine performed in nine patients. In seven instances other treatment modalities had…

Evaluation of infradiaphragmatic total anomalous pulmonary venous connection with two-dimensional echocardiography.

In three newborn infants with infradiaphragmatic total anomalous pulmonary venous connection, the common pulmonary vein was visualized with two-dimensional echocardiography and validated with saline contrast injections. The transducer was placed in the subcostal region in a sagittal body plane so as to image the descending aorta and the vertebral column. The common pulmonary vein, which connected the pulmonary veins to a systemic vein in the abdomen, was seen lying parallel and anterior to the descending aorta and to the left of the inferior vena cava. With peripheral venous contrast injection

The size of the aortic arch: a suitable criterion for differentiating between congenital heart diseases with left-to-right shunt?

A retrospective study was carried out to determine whether aortic arch size can be regarded as a reliable criterion for differentiating between congenital left-to-right shunt defects. The PA and AP plain chest films of children of all age groups with ductus arteriosus persistens (DAP) (n = 91), atrial septal defect (ASD) (n = 86), ventricular septal defect (VSD) (n = 87) and a normal control group (n = 387) were used to measure the size of the aortic arch, and an aortic index (AI) was calculated from aortic arch size and the height of the eighth thoracic vertebral body. Three age classes were …

Nationwide seroprevalence and spatial distribution of Toxoplasma gondii in wild boar (Sus scrofa) in South Korea, 2022-2025.

Toxoplasma gondii is a widespread zoonotic parasite that can infect nearly all warm-blooded vertebrates. Wild boars (Sus scrofa) are valuable indicator hosts because of their broad habitat use, omnivorous feeding behavior, and frequent contact with both natural and human-modified environments. However, comprehensive nationwide data on T. gondii exposure in wildlife in South Korea remain limited. This study aimed to investigate the seroprevalence, associated risk factors, and spatial distribution of T. gondii exposure in wild boars in South Korea using nationwide surveillance samples collected

Bioinformatic and functional characterization of the vitellogenin receptor in Dipetalogaster maxima, a vector of Chagas disease.

Reproduction in insects is a tightly regulated process that relies on the accumulation of yolk protein precursors (YPPs) to support embryonic development. Vitellogenin, the main YPP, is synthesized in the fat body-analogous to the liver and adipose tissue of vertebrates-and transported through the hemolymph to the ovarian follicles, where it is internalized by developing oocytes via the vitellogenin receptor (VgR). Despite its essential role in vitellogenesis, the functional characterization of insect VgR remains incomplete. Triatomines are hematophagous insects and vectors of Trypanosoma cruz

Convergent evolution of diverse jaw joints in mammaliamorphs.

The evolution of a single-dentary-boned lower jaw and its secondary craniomandibular articulation between the dentary condyle and the squamosal glenoid has been regarded as a pivotal vertebrate innovation and defining mammalian trait1-7. Here we report two mammaliamorphs with novel shapes of secondary jaw joint, offering insight into the evolution of the mammalian jaw. The first, Polistodon8, a Middle Jurassic herbivorous tritylodontid with a relatively large body size and a lifestyle that is likely to have been fossorial, uniquely evolved a dentary-jugal articulation. The second, an Early Jur

Elevated Testosterone Is Required for Male Sexual Behaviour and Dynamic Colour Change in Veiled Chameleons.

INTRODUCTION: Sex-specific genotype and early organization can influence the expression of sexually dimorphic traits in vertebrates. We tested these hypotheses in male-typical behaviour and rapid change to bright colouration in the veiled chameleon (Chamaeleo calyptratus) with XX/XY sex chromosomes. METHODS: Hormonal manipulations included castration with and without testosterone replacement and testosterone administration in females. RESULTS: Long-term testosterone treatment induced male-typical sexual behaviour and an ability to switch to bright colouration in females, while castration sup

Network architecture of intrinsic connectivity in a mammalian spinal cord (the central nervous system's caudal sector).

The vertebrate spinal cord (SP) is the long, thin extension of the brain forming the central nervous system's caudal sector. Functionally, the SP directly mediates motor and somatic sensory interactions with most parts of the body except the face, and it is the preferred model for analyzing relatively simple reflex behaviors. Here, we analyze the organization of axonal connections between the 50 gray matter regions forming the bilaterally symmetric rat SP. The assembled dataset suggests that there are about 385 of a possible 2,450 connections between the 50 regions for a connection density of

Complex ontogeny of sexual size dimorphism in a female-larger gecko: Implications of determinate growth for lizard body size and life-history evolution.

Ectothermic vertebrates such as reptiles were assumed to be indeterminate growers, which means that there is no terminal point in time or size for growth in their lifetime. In recent years, evidence for the determinate nature of growth in lizards has accumulated, necessitating a re-examination of models of their ontogeny and evolution of sexual size dimorphism (SSD). In the female-larger gecko Paroedura vazimba, we monitored post-embryonic growth over a period of 15 months. After hatching, females grew faster than males but also reached their final body size, that is, closed growth of their ve

Isavuconazole Induces Neurodevelopment Defects and Motor Behaviour Impairment in Zebrafish Larvae.

Isavuconazole is a broad-spectrum antifungal drug used for the treatment of serious infections caused by invasive aspergillosis and mucormycosis in adults. With the continuous use of this drug, its safety and environmental impact have received increasing attention. However, information on the adverse effects of the drug is very limited. Fish is a particularly important model for assessing environmental risks. In this study, the aquatic vertebrate zebrafish was used as a model to study the toxic effects and mechanisms of isavuconazole. We exposed zebrafish embryos to 0.25, 0.5, and 1 mg/L of is

Larger Genomes Linked to Slower Development and Loss of Late-Developing Traits.

Genome size varies widely among organisms and is known to affect vertebrate development, morphology, and physiology. In amphibians, genome size is hypothesized to contribute to loss of late-forming structures, although this hypothesis has mainly been discussed in salamanders. Here we estimated genome size for 22 anuran species and combined this novel data set with existing genome size data for an additional 234 anuran species to determine whether larger genome size is associated with loss of a late-forming anuran sensory structure, the tympanic middle ear. We established that genome size is ne

Functional Role of γ-Crystallin N in the Auditory Hindbrain.

γ-crystallins are major components of the vertebrate lens but show expression in other tissues as well. Their extralenticular functions remain so far unclear. Here, we explored such roles in the rodent superior olivary complex in which previous analysis demonstrated developmentally regulated expression of Crygd, Cryge and Crygn. Immunohistochemistry with novel antibodies against Crygd/e and Crygn indicate that expression of Crygd/e was moderate and varied between the perinatal superior olivary complex of mice, rats, and gerbils. Crygn-immunoreactivity was more robust and consistently highest i

Purinergic and Cholinergic Drugs Mediate Hyperventilation in Zebrafish: Evidence from a Novel Chemical Screen.

A rapid test to identify drugs that affect autonomic responses to hypoxia holds therapeutic and ecologic value. The zebrafish (Danio rerio) is a convenient animal model for investigating peripheral O2 chemoreceptors and respiratory reflexes in vertebrates; however, the neurotransmitters and receptors involved in this process are not adequately defined. The goals of the present study were to demonstrate purinergic and cholinergic control of the hyperventilatory response to hypoxia in zebrafish, and to develop a procedure for screening of neurochemicals that affect respiration. Zebrafish larvae

Functional analysis of recombinant 2-Cys peroxiredoxin from the hard tick Haemaphysalis longicornis.

Ticks are obligate haematophagous arthropods that feed on vertebrate blood containing high levels of iron. The host-derived iron reacts to oxygen in the tick's body, and then high levels of reactive oxygen species, including hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)), may be generated. High levels of H(2)O(2) cause oxidative stress to aerobic organisms. Therefore, antioxidant responses are necessary to control H(2)O(2). We focused on peroxiredoxins (Prxs), H(2)O(2) -scavenging enzymes. The sequence of Haemaphysalis longicornis 2-Cys Prx (HlPrx2) was identified from fat body cDNA libraries of this tick and r

Melanosome evolution indicates a key physiological shift within feathered dinosaurs.

Inference of colour patterning in extinct dinosaurs has been based on the relationship between the morphology of melanin-containing organelles (melanosomes) and colour in extant bird feathers. When this relationship evolved relative to the origin of feathers and other novel integumentary structures, such as hair and filamentous body covering in extinct archosaurs, has not been evaluated. Here we sample melanosomes from the integument of 181 extant amniote taxa and 13 lizard, turtle, dinosaur and pterosaur fossils from the Upper-Jurassic and Lower-Cretaceous of China. We find that in the lineag

The zebrafish merovingian mutant reveals a role for pH regulation in hair cell toxicity and function.

Control of the extracellular environment of inner ear hair cells by ionic transporters is crucial for hair cell function. In addition to inner ear hair cells, aquatic vertebrates have hair cells on the surface of their body in the lateral line system. The ionic environment of these cells also appears to be regulated, although the mechanisms of this regulation are less understood than those of the mammalian inner ear. We identified the merovingian mutant through genetic screening in zebrafish for genes involved in drug-induced hair cell death. Mutants show complete resistance to neomycin-induce
