Clinical outcomes in multifocal motor neuropathy: A combined cross-sectional and follow-up study.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the clinical course of multifocal motor neuropathy (MMN) in a large cohort of patients and to identify predictive facto … essive disease. Although 87% of patients received maintenance treatment, muscle strength, reflexes, vibration sense, and the Self-Evaluation Scale score significantly deteriorated over time. Lower MRC sumscore and absence of reflexes predicted a more progressive disease course. CLASSIFICATION OF EVIDENCE: This study provides Class II evidence that lower MR …

Creatine and taurine mixtures alleviate depressive-like behaviour in Drosophila melanogaster and mice via regulating Akt and ERK/BDNF pathways.

We investigated the antidepressant effect of creatine (CRE) and taurine (TAU) mixtures on behavioural changes and biomarkers in stress-induced depression in Drosophila melanogaster and a mouse model. Following CRE/TAU mixture administration in the Drosophila model, depression-like state induced by vibration, locomotion, climbing activity, and survival rate were measured. The normal stress (NS) group demonstrated decreased movement than the control (CON) group; movements in the CRE/TAU-treated group (particularly 0.15/0.5%) returned to the CON levels. Antidepressant effects of CRE/TAU mixtures …

Synthesis and characterization of microbial mediated cadmium oxide nanoparticles.

Microbial mediated synthesis of metallic nanoparticles constitutes as effective and promising approach for the development of antibacterial … 7 nm with 2.5 eV band gap energy. Human Sensation of Transcranial Electric Stimulation.

Noninvasive transcranial electric stimulation is increasingly being used as an advantageous therapy alternative that may activate deep tissu … ditory and visual sensation but also a broader presence of somatic sensation ranging from touch and vibration to pain and pressure. We found generally monotonic input-output functions at suprathreshold levels, and often multiple types of sensation occurring simultaneously in response to the same electric stimulation. We further used a recording circuit embe …

High-Resolution Manometry as a Tool for Biofeedback in Vertical Laryngeal Positioning.

BACKGROUND: Low vertical larynx results in reduced musculoskeletal tension and easier vocal fold vibration what is critical not only for professional voice users but also for patients with dysphonia. High-resolution manometry (HRM) provides real time upper esophageal sphincter positioning as a surrogate for laryngeal location and it may be a tool for laryngeal excursion biofeedback. This study aims to evaluate HRM as a biofeedback instrument to control vertical laryngeal position. METHODS: Ten (50% males, mean age 28 years) professional singers were asked to raise and descent their larynx usi…

From finger friction to brain activation: Tactile perception of the roughness of gratings.

The formation of tactile perception is related to skin receptors and the cerebral cortex. In order to systematically study the tactile perce … nd stress, which induced stronger tactile stimulation. The smaller grating spacing generated higher vibration frequency, inducing stronger tactile stimulation. The latency of the P300 peak was related to the difference between the textured target stimulus and the smooth non-target stimulus. This study proofed that there was a relationship between the activa …

Surface Motion of Tympanic Membrane in a Chinchilla Model of Acute Otitis Media.

The conductive hearing loss caused by acute otitis media (AOM) is commonly related to a reduction of the tympanic membrane (TM) mobility in response to sound stimuli. However, spatial alterations of the TM surface motion associated with AOM have rarely been addressed. In this study, the TM surface motion was determined using scanning laser Doppler vibrometry (SLDV) in a chinchilla model of AOM. The AOM was established by transbullar injection of nontypeable Haemophilus influenzae. The TM surface vibration was measured in control (uninfected) animals and two AOM groups of animals: 4 days (4D) a…

The effectiveness of front fork systems at damping accelerations during isolated aspects specific to cross-country mountain biking.

Cross-country mountain bike suspension reportedly enhances comfort and performance through reduced vibration and impact exposure. This study analysed the effectiveness of three different front fork systems at damping accelerations during the crossing of three isolated obstacles (stairs, drop, and root). One participant completed three trials on six separate occasions in a randomised order using rigid, air-sprung, and carbon leaf-sprung forks. Performance was determined by time to cross obstacles, while triaxial accelerometers quantified impact exposure and damping response. Results identified …

Direct-Acting Antiviral Therapy for Chronic HCV Infection Results in Liver Stiffness Regression Over 12 Months Post-treatment.

BACKGROUND: Liver fibrosis stage determines risk of morbidity and mortality from chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. Prior data have shown long-term reversal of liver fibrosis, measured by vibration-controlled transient elastography (VCTE), in patients successfully treated with interferon-based therapies. AIM: Our study sought to determine the effect of treatment with modern HCV direct-acting antiviral (DAA) therapy on noninvasive liver fibrosis measurements. METHODS: A total of 70 patients had VCTE-based liver stiffness measurement (LSM) taken before treatment, directly after treatme…

Fuzzy logic-based risk of fall estimation using smartwatch data as a means to form an assistive feedback mechanism in everyday living activities.

The latter is fed back to the user with a mechanism chosen by him/her (i.e. vibration and/or sound), to prevent a possible fall, and also sent to the attentive carers and/or healthcare professionals for a home-based monitoring beyond the clinic. The proposed approach paves the way for effective exploitation of the contribution of sma …

Mucociliary clearance techniques for treating non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis: Is there evidence?

Non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis (nCFb) is an acquired condition of variable etiology. An impaired mucociliary clearance seems to be one of the mechanisms behind nCFb, and treatment involves antibiotics, mucoactive agents, and airway clearance techniques (ACTs). Traditional ACTs have four components: postural drainage, percussion, vibration of the chest wall, and coughing. Reviewing the international medical literature on the use of ACTs for patients with nCFb from 1989 to the present day, we retrieved 93 articles, of which 35 met our selection criteria for this analysis. We reviewed active …
