Age-Related Macular or Retinal Degeneration?

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is an eye disease that leads to progressive vision loss. Its prevalence has been increasing due to population aging. Previously, it was commonly believed that the disease affects the central retina, that is, the macula. However, recent studies have shown that it also involves the peripheral retina. Novel imaging techniques revealed various degenerative lesions that extend beyond the central macula. While their prevalence remains unknown, they seem to be more frequent in patients with late AMD. These findings suggest that the term "age-related retinal dysf

Integrative metabolic analysis of orbital adipose/connective tissue in patients with thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy.

OBJECTIVE: Thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy (TAO) is a disfiguring autoimmune disease, which destroys the structure of orbital tissues and even threatens vision. Metabolic reprograming is critical in autoimmune diseases; however, the metabolic basis of TAO remains to be clarified. Our study aimed to reveal the metabolic profile of TAO. METHODS: Orbital adipose/connective tissues from eleven TAO patients and twelve control subjects were collected during surgeries and analyzed with liquid chromatograph-mass spectrometer. Orthogonal partial least-squares discrimination analysis (OPLS-DA), varia

Mice with mutations in Trpm1, a gene in the locus of 15q13.3 microdeletion syndrome, display pronounced hyperactivity and decreased anxiety-like behavior.

The 15q13.3 microdeletion syndrome is a genetic disorder characterized by a wide spectrum of psychiatric disorders that is caused by the deletion of a region containing 7 genes on chromosome 15 (MTMR10, FAN1, TRPM1, MIR211, KLF13, OTUD7A, and CHRNA7). The contribution of each gene in this syndrome has been studied using mutant mouse models, but no single mouse model recapitulates the whole spectrum of human 15q13.3 microdeletion syndrome. The behavior of Trpm1-/- mice has not been investigated in relation to 15q13.3 microdeletion syndrome due to the visual impairment in these mice, which may c

Supervised classification of bradykinesia in Parkinson's disease from smartphone videos.

BACKGROUND: Slowness of movement, known as bradykinesia, is the core clinical sign of Parkinson's and fundamental to its diagnosis. Clinicians commonly assess bradykinesia by making a visual judgement of the patient tapping finger and thumb together repetitively. However, inter-rater agreement of expert assessments has been shown to be only moderate, at best. AIM: We propose a low-cost, contactless system using smartphone videos to automatically determine the presence of bradykinesia. METHODS: We collected 70 videos of finger-tap assessments in a clinical setting (40 Parkinson's hands, 30 co

Balance and Gait Impairment in Transient Ischemic Attack and Minor Stroke.

BACKGROUND: There has been little research into gait and balance impairment in transient ischemic attack (TIA) and minor stroke, despite these conditions affecting large numbers of people and the potential impact on function. The aim of this study was to determine the impact of TIA and minor stroke on gait and balance. METHODS: Twelve people with TIA or minor stroke without previous gait/balance problems and 12 age- and sex-matched controls were recruited. Participants (mean age 67 years) underwent a comprehensive assessment including physiological, balance, and gait measures (clinical and co

Effect of increased axial rotation angle on bone mineral density measurements of the lumbar spine.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Osteoporosis frequently occurs in elderly people and is commonly associated with neuromuscular diseases or severe cerebral palsy. Osteoporosis can cause pain via compression fractures or secondary neurologic deficits; thus, accurate evaluation of bone mineral density (BMD) is essential for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis. However, spinal axial rotation caused by scoliosis may affect the outcome of BMD tests, such that BMD measurements may be significantly greater than actual BMD in patients with severe scoliosis of the spine. PURPOSE: We investigated the effec

Impact of superior and inferior visual field loss on hazard detection in a computer-based driving test.

PURPOSE: Binocular visual field (VF) loss is linked to driving impairment, guiding authorities to implement fitness to drive requirements for VFs. Yet, evidence is limited regarding the specific types of VF defect that impede driving. This study used a novel gaze-contingent display to test the hypothesis that superior VF loss impacts detection of driving hazards more than inferior loss. METHODS: The Hazard Perception Test (HPT) is a computer-based component of the UK examination for learner drivers. It measures the response rate for detecting hazards in a series of real-life driving films, yi

Auditory and visual health after ten years of exposure to metal-on-metal hip prostheses: a cross-sectional study follow up.

Case reports of patients with mal-functioning metal-on-metal hip replacement (MoMHR) prostheses suggest an association of elevated circulating metal levels with visual and auditory dysfunction. However, it is unknown if this is a cumulative exposure effect and the impact of prolonged low level exposure, relevant to the majority of patients with a well-functioning prosthesis, has not been studied. Twenty four male patients with a well-functioning MoMHR and an age and time since surgery matched group of 24 male patients with conventional total hip arthroplasty (THA) underwent clinical and electr

Real-time and nested polymerase chain reaction in the diagnosis of multifocal serpiginoid choroiditis caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis - a case report.

BACKGROUND: The term multifocal serpiginoid choroiditis (MSC) has been proposed for the infective variant of serpiginous choroiditis (SC) to distinguish it from typical SC believed to be autoimmune related. The role of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTb) in MSC has been studied by conventional polymerase chain reaction (PCR). However, the use of real-time PCR (RT-PCR) and nested PCR (N-PCR) in MSC has not been reported. This paper aims to highlight the usefulness of PCR in identifying MTb as a causative agent for MSC leading to its correct treatment with anti-tubercular therapy (ATT). FINDINGS:
