Characteristics of Inpatient Admission for Mpox Infection Control Isolation at 2 Large New York City Health Systems, 2022-2023.

We investigated the proportion of mpox hospitalizations for medical indications versus infection control isolation at New York University Langone Health and NYC Health + Hospitals from May 1, 2022, through April 28, 2023. We reviewed the electronic medical records of people with a positive mpox nucleic acid amplification test independently. We collected demographic and clinical data on those who met our inclusion criteria, and we stratified patients by medical indication or infection control isolation based on their reason for hospitalization. This observational cohort study included 66 patien

Characteristics Associated With Sustained Viral Suppression Status Among People With HIV Who Were Incarcerated in the Past 12 Months, 2015-2022.

OBJECTIVES: People with HIV (PWH) who transition back into the community after incarceration often experience treatment disruptions, increasing the risk of poor outcomes. We examined factors associated with sustained viral suppression (SVS) after release. METHODS: We analyzed 2015-2022 data from a nationally representative sample of PWH (N = 1012). We used weighted percentages and 95% CIs to describe the characteristics of recently incarcerated PWH by postrelease SVS status. We calculated prevalence ratios (PRs) to identify factors associated with SVS. RESULTS: Among PWH who were incarcerate

Sex- and Age-Specific Lyme Disease Testing Patterns in the United States, 2019 and 2022.

OBJECTIVES: Serologic testing is a useful adjunct for the diagnosis of Lyme disease, a major public health problem in certain US regions. We aimed to determine whether Lyme disease serologic testing and results differed by sex and age group. METHODS: We identified 2 cohorts of individuals across all ages who underwent serologic testing for Lyme disease at a national reference laboratory in 2019 (cohort 1) and 2022 (cohort 2). If an individual had multiple tests in the same year, we included only the first test. We excluded individuals who had been tested in the previous 5 years. RESULTS: Coh

Educational Intervention to Promote Offering of Rapid Antiretroviral Therapy Among Primary Care Providers in a Correctional Facility in California, 2017-2023.

Rapid initiation of antiretroviral therapy (rapid ART) is a clinical strategy where HIV treatment is initiated on day of HIV diagnosis, resulting in improved retention in care and virologic suppression. HIV specialists historically have prescribed ART, but recent efforts have increased prescribing among primary care providers. Justice-involved individuals have lower rates of engagement in care along the HIV care continuum compared with the general population; evaluating the effect of rapid ART prescribing by provider type can aid in improving outcomes among this population. The purpose of this

Surveillance for Unexplained Deaths of Possible Infectious Etiologies During the COVID-19 Pandemic-Minnesota, 2020-2021.

OBJECTIVES: Surveillance systems for unexplained deaths that might have an infectious etiology are rare. We examined the Minnesota Department of Health Unexplained Deaths and Critical Illnesses of Possible Infectious Etiology and Medical Examiner Infectious Deaths (UNEX/MED-X) surveillance system,-a system that expanded postmortem surveillance for infectious diseases during the COVID-19 pandemic by leveraging standard (medical examiner [ME]) and expanded (mortuary) surveillance to identify COVID-19-related deaths. METHODS: MEs, coroners, or morticians collected postmortem swabs from decedents

Implementing an Alert System for Communicating Actionable Wastewater Surveillance Results to School Communities, Houston, Texas, 2023-2024.

In 2020, the Houston Health Department (HHD) in Texas launched a citywide wastewater surveillance program, including a pilot program that monitored manholes at schools in Houston's largest school district (prekindergarten-12th grade). By 2022, the pilot program monitored wastewater for SARS-CoV-2, influenza A and B, and respiratory syncytial virus. To ensure effective communication of wastewater surveillance results to school communities, HHD designed and implemented a text- and email-based alert system using existing City of Houston resources. This alert program informs recipients about the p

Contributions of the Community-Based Organization Program Funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to Linkage to HIV Medical Care.

OBJECTIVE: Linkage to HIV medical care is important in the continuum of HIV care and health outcomes for people with HIV. The objective of this analysis was to identify how the community-based organization (CBO) program contributes to linkage to HIV medical care among people with newly diagnosed HIV in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC's) HIV testing program. METHODS: We analyzed HIV linkage-to-care data submitted to CDC from 2019 through 2021. Linkage was defined as confirmation that an individual attended their first HIV medical care appointment within 30 days of their H

Enhanced Emergency Medical Services Case Definition to Identify Suspected Nonfatal Opioid Overdose-Related Incidents in Rhode Island.

OBJECTIVES: To improve rapid detection and response to spikes in suspected nonfatal opioid overdoses in the community, the Rhode Island Department of Health (RIDOH) sought to modify its case definition to align with newly released guidance from the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists (CSTE). METHODS: RIDOH used CSTE guidance to create 2 alternative criteria (CSTE-guided and RIDOH-modified CSTE) to replace one of RIDOH's original criteria. We gathered emergency medical services (EMS) records from 4 months in 2022 to determine whether they met any criteria, and we reviewed them to

Characteristics of People Who Do Not Complete a Public Health Interview: An Assessment of Colorado Enteric Disease Surveillance Data.

OBJECTIVES: Although enteric disease case interviews are critical for control measures and education, not all case-patients are interviewed. We evaluated systematic differences between people with an enteric disease in Colorado who were and were not interviewed to identify ways to increase response rates and reduce biases in the surveillance data used to guide public health interventions. METHODS: We obtained data from the Colorado Electronic Disease Reporting System from March 1, 2017, through December 31, 2019. Among case-patients not interviewed and interviewed, we used univariate analyses

Rapid Identification of Suspected Drug Overdose Deaths by Death Investigators, New Jersey, 2020.

OBJECTIVE: While the number of overdoses in the United States continues to increase, lags in data availability have undermined efforts to monitor, respond to, and prevent drug overdose deaths. We examined the performance of a single-item mandatory radio button implemented into a statewide medical examiner database to identify suspected drug overdose deaths in near-real time. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The New Jersey Office of the Chief State Medical Examiner operates a statewide mandated case management data system to document deaths that fall under the jurisdiction of a medical examiner office.

Associations Between Social Networks and COVID-19 Vaccine Uptake in 4 Rural Alabama Counties: Survey Findings.

OBJECTIVES: The COVID-19 pandemic demonstrated how vaccination decisions are influenced by misinformation, disinformation, and social pressures, leading to varied and inequitable uptake rates. In this study, we examined how COVID-19 vaccine messages received via social networks were associated with vaccine uptake in rural Alabama. METHODS: From November 2021 through March 2022, we collected 700 responses to a telephone survey administered in 4 rural Alabama counties. We asked respondents to indicate whether certain social relationships (eg, family, businesses) tried to influence them to (1) o

Cyclical variations in acoustic features within the song sessions of humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae).

Song sessions produced by humpback whales recorded off the coasts of Hawaii and Colombia show recurrent patterns of acoustic variation across consecutive songs. Analyses of intra-individual variations within continuous song sessions revealed that songs consistently cycled through stages of acoustic complexity. At time scales spanning tens of minutes, cyclical variations likely reflected the diving behavior of singers. Changes over shorter time frames suggest that singing humpback whales may also systematically modulate the acoustic complexity of individual sounds during song production, both b

Infectious Diseases Among People Experiencing Homelessness: A Systematic Review of the Literature in the United States and Canada, 2003-2022.

Homelessness increases the risk of acquiring an infectious disease. We conducted a systematic review of the literature to identify quantitative data related to infectious diseases and homelessness. We searched Google Scholar, PubMed, and SCOPUS for quantitative literature published from January 2003 through December 2022 in English from the United States and Canada. We excluded literature on vaccine-preventable diseases and HIV because these diseases were recently reviewed. Of the 250 articles that met inclusion criteria, more than half were on hepatitis C virus or Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

SARS-CoV-2 Infection and Other Communicable Diseases Identified Among Evacuees From Afghanistan Arriving in Virginia and Pennsylvania, August to September 2021.

In 2021, the US government undertook Operation Allies Welcome, in which evacuees from Afghanistan arrived at 2 US ports of entry in Virginia and Pennsylvania. Because of the rapid evacuation process, the US government granted evacuees an exemption to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) requirement in place at that time-namely, that air passengers present a negative SARS-CoV-2 viral test result or documentation of recovery from COVID-19 before they boarded international flights bound for the United States. This study describes cases of SARS-CoV-2 infection detected among 65 068 e
